Partner won’t give me a lift in the ice …

inkyspells · 07/01/2026 13:13

So during the night the snow has started to melt and it’s icy out there.
The main roads are clear but the paths are Ice.
Went out this morning and even with my boots on I’ve fallen over.
I get really anxious about falling over so that’s knocked my confidence.
My partner is a manager of a company 5 mins around the corner and I asked him could you drive me to the bus stop just so I can get to my dads and take out his dog and get him essentials (he’s 86 and I don’t want him falling over )
He said no he’s not doing that and I just need to get a grip and walk to the bus stop (about 10 mins but it’s thick of ice )
Bare in mind last night he was on his way home when his work friend text saying the bus hadn’t come so he immediately said “no bother mate il take you home “ 20 mins in opposite direction.
Aibu to be a bit sad he won’t even drive 5 mins to help me out.
Now before anyone comes at me,last year I slipped on the ice and broke my wrist so ever since then I’ve been scared…I have bought decent boots but still it’s a ice rink.

Also we live in a big city with good public transport so I don’t really need to drive.
Obviously days like today it would of been a massive help but normally I can get around pretty good without it (with working from home)

My partner has the car because he needs it for work appointments Normally he has a van but it’s away getting a repair

I think if the work van is away getting repaired, it's fair enough that his home car wasn't available for work appointments today. He might not even have access to another vehicle, so if work wanted him to go and do work appointments, they should provide an alternative.

It would have made sense for you to take him to work, then you could see to your dad using the house car.

Can you do that tomorrow?

Work did provide an alternative... He's the boss. He provided his own alternative 🤣

So the dog is only going out to toilet, not exercise? Is the dog very old? Is there no dog equivalent of a litter tray?
Your father could have an online delivery if he needs any supplies. It maybe better, as he is 86, that he has a regular online delivery.

I work from home and manage my own work so I can be prefer flexible on hours etc
My partner has the car because he needs it for work appointments
Normally he has a van but it’s away getting a repair
I don’t drive often (out of choice ) but for emergency I would.
It wasn’t safe out there for my dad to be walking around in and I don’t mind helping him at all.
If anyone was gonna fall I would rather me than him.
He doesn’t have a garden or yard.
Front door leads on to main path and back door is a lane.
The dog only knows to do his business on grass so would probably hold it for as long as he could.

Just because you can be flexible, it doesn't mean your partner could today.

Incidentally your dad is BU to have a dog and no garden/yard!

It sounds like he works, so brings finances 'to the table'. If he works and the OP doesn't, it's probably even more important that he stays at work, rather than driving her to walk her dad's dog.

Well thankfully my husband brings a lot more to the table than just money.

inkyspells · 07/01/2026 19:07

@takealettermsjonesutter rubbish …believe it or not people without gardens are allowed dogs.
He goes out for walks twice a day and 4 times a day to do his business.

I wouldn't get anyone out of work but as someone who had a fall on a slippery pavement today, I know how upsetting and painful it is.

ilovelamp82 · 07/01/2026 19:20

Interesting you use the word partner. That implies he's on your team. He's working against you not with you. I would feel so unloved and lose respect for him. He's showing you who he is and what he thinks of you. You can definitely do better than this. Being single is infinitely better than this.

JG24 · 07/01/2026 19:29

Yes he's horrible
But also get those grippers for your shoes, they are amazing and slip over any shoes but work better with sturdier boots
I never worry anymore when I'm wearing them

AfraidToRun · 07/01/2026 19:44

Get a better "partner", I had one like this. The constant disappointment wears very thin after a while...

I wouldn't even need to ask my husband...

Did you manage to get over today?

Balloonhearts · 07/01/2026 23:20

I think you're being silly tbh. You need him to take you to the bus stop but are happy to walk from the bus stop at the other end, to your dad's and take the dog out? It's no less slippery when you get off the bus, than it was before you got on. Plus he's at work, not sitting on his arse at home. If my partner asked me to leave work to drive him to the bus stop in case he fell over, I'd think he'd lost the bloody plot.

Taxis exist

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 08/01/2026 07:53

How were you planning to get home @inkyspells where you expecting your partner to come collect you, take you shopping, wait will you walked the dog and then take you home and then go back to work or were you going to wait at your dads for your partner to finish work and collect you?

OP wrote but it’s gonna be about £15 so I can’t afford to get two taxis

ImSweetEnough · 08/01/2026 16:56

@inkyspells I ask again... why does your OH drive to work which is 5 minutes away from your home?

Share the car.

He obviously couldn't care less about you.

Blablibladirladada · 08/01/2026 18:32

honestly, I am of two minds.

I think it is very much a situation where your partner should know you and how you feel about stuff and be an actual partner. It isn’t all « rose » and there are times where our partner can disappoint.

You seem sensitive and I get you fell down once but also, you can buy the needed stuff and be done with it? Why do you « need » him to…is where I struggle a bit.

All in all…he doesn’t seem so much into you and you are bitter about it so leave him?

HappyNannie · 08/01/2026 18:41

He’s a twat for disrespecting your anxiety and choosing a work colleague over you.
He’s a showing how much he actually cares for you so match his effort.

Oldwmn · 08/01/2026 18:43

Clefable · 07/01/2026 13:15

Buy some YakTrax. Like a tenner on Amazon and you won’t fall on ice again.

And consider what your ‘partner’ brings to your life.

I bought some yaktrax in 2010 & the weather immediately improved. I had to throw them out the other day because they've perished.

Seriously, I'm terrified of ice. I was seriously injured in a fall about 40 years ago & don't need that to happen again in my 70s! I think your bloke is an unfeeling shitbag.

Mayana1 · 08/01/2026 18:46

Absolutely not coming on you! Next time you politely and with a smile decline something he will ask and it will be very important!
