Replacing crisps

sunshine244 · 05/01/2026 17:52

My new year's resolution was to eat less crisps. My empty large doritos bag says I've failed. I love the crunch, the spice salt...

What alternatives are there? Don't dare suggest an apple 🤣

I slightly boil potato skins, dry them then tiny bit of olive oil and seasoning them. Cook them in the actifryer until crispy. Amazing

Sprogonthetyne · 05/01/2026 17:56

Rice cakes? Thought I put cream cheese on mine while it probably no better

AudHvamm · 05/01/2026 17:57

Nothing compares really, but you can make decent pita chips at home - lots of recipes if you Google.

BonneMamanAbricot · 05/01/2026 17:58

Pickles, olives, beef jerky for the salt

So just boil just the skins? Interesting. And a good way to use the skins!

BonneMamanAbricot · 05/01/2026 17:58

Or air-popped popcorn

TyneTeas · 05/01/2026 17:58

Aldi lentil chips are quite nice

There is sea salt or BBQ flavour

Fearfulsaints · 05/01/2026 17:58

I eat a few nuts instead of crisps.

AllIdoistidyup · 05/01/2026 17:59

You can't. I just try and replace with the above mentioned lentil chips or similar - but really I want Wotsits Crunchy.

Badslipperluck · 05/01/2026 17:59

Good bread with a bit of salted butter and some paprika or something? Cut into little squares if you must

SquigglePigs · 05/01/2026 17:59

Salted nuts? Although they're calorie dense so you'd have to be a bit careful.

Would salted seaweed work?

Turmerictea · 05/01/2026 18:01

You'll hate me but I eat bags of radishes like crisps - same satisfying crunch!
Also peppers like apples

Maybe try adding some salt to your main meals if you're craving salt?

Resilience · 05/01/2026 18:01

Popcorn. Get yourself a bag of kernels and a popcorn maker. Drizzle a little olive oil and salt/spices over it. Gorgeous, healthy, high on fibre and hardly any calories.

Start with the reason you set that goal. Why is that a resolution. Then focus on that as the outcome.

Member984815 · 05/01/2026 18:03

I've cut them out altogether since new year , it's bloody hard there's no replacement . I've cut out alcohol too which makes giving crisps up slightly easier because I'd have both together.

That doesnt tend to fill you up very much nor give a satisfying salty crunch.

showyourquality · 05/01/2026 18:06

Spicy kale is actually a lot nicer than it sounds

Needmorelego · 05/01/2026 18:07

Are things like the lentil chips actually any healthier?
I too desperately need to cut down on crisps but have always included the lentil or hummus (?) chips as being "crisps".

AllIdoistidyup · 05/01/2026 18:08

Slightly less fat. And not as nice so I don't eat as many!

Touty · 05/01/2026 18:10

Pork scratchings. High in protein and low carb.

If you like them carry on. Life's too short. I love crisp especially chicken sensations, I could eat a whole share size bag.

I like the tomato and basil flavoured thingys from Aldi/Lidl which I think are made with hummus. Unfortunately they only seem to come in giant bags....which I end up eating the whole damm lot in one go (no self control).
I'm thinking I should maybe aim for ONE bag of Monster Munch because the packs are so tiny now you only get about 5 monsters.
I have been trying to cut down on crisps forever.... I think I am doomed.

Fearfulsaints · 05/01/2026 18:13

You can air fry chick peas with harissa paste too

persisted · 05/01/2026 18:13

I keep reading that if you roast chickpeas in the Airfryer and add a bit of salt and spices they’re brilliant. A lot like crisps with more protein and less fat.
I haven’t been convinced enough to actually try yet so would be interested to hear if you do.
