To ask why people are so utterly bonkers?

Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

Someone has made up a thread about boiled potatoes with lasagne and I just can't deal with anymore internet today.

Octavia64 · 05/01/2026 16:55

Nah people have always been bonkers.

I don't think that thread's made up.
But in answer to the OP, folk have always been mad. Nowt as queer as folk. The internet just gives new outlets for it!

That was fake?! Gawd I'm not surprised. But so bizarre isn't it?!

I saw that thread and thought it was obviously trying to get “you don’t put potatoes in lasagne!” responses. The mind boggles.

She was boiling potatoes for her lasagne and putting cheese in the bechamel. Lasagne is not a complicated dish. Had to be a wind up?!

I don’t think cheese in the bechamel is a sign of a made up thread. It’s the sign of a yummy lasagne!

The potato sounds a bit mad though.

NotAnotherScarf · 05/01/2026 17:01

I don't know, but I have been talking to people I know and think are intelligent level headed people and suddenly they come out with the maddest conspiracy theories:

There's a cabal of rich people who run the world or it's the masons
Planes are the main cause of global warming.
The poor lady who fell in a river a couple of years was murdered by the people who own the nearby campsite because they didn't like dogs.
Etc

I just don't understand why you would believe things like that with no proof or reason. Some are funny, some are ridiculous and some like the story that Muslim people were being murdered if they went to hospital with COVID cost lives.

The guy who dressed up as an admiral...why just why? If you want to belong then join the round table or a lions club or the masons and do good things

I do like that the Marcon people were formally prosecuted but will it stop people? It’s like a new illness. Yes, you had people who exaggerated etc but now it’s full blown wacko stuff

Cheese in the bechemal for lasagne is pretty standard And maybe potatoes for a gluten free lasagne?

I think the Internet has allowed all the bonkers people to find each other easily making them more visible and vocal.

CrikeyNumpty · 05/01/2026 17:06

That man who went to the Remembrance Service said he wanted a sense of belonging. He had no armed service at all. He has been spotted at other services too. He had a uniform altered to suit high rank in the Navy (posed as a Rear Admiral no less, no lowly rank for him) and bought medals which were his downfall because he was wearing two that had never been awarded to one person before. He also just went up to the Mayoral party and placed himself dead centre in the photos. He was caught by an organisation called The Walter Mitty Something or other - they look out for these types and grass them up. So there are others doing it. Rightfully so, he had zero rights to be there in an official capacity- he could have just turned up in the crowd like any other punter. He wanted the attention. Idiot. It’s like those guys who say they were in the SAS, this is usually said to reel in women. The SAS must have the biggest military squad in the world, the amount of men who have claimed to be ex SAS.

There must be some mental illness at play. Or severe boredom with their real lives.

I am also baffled by the Macron story.

Also, that girl from Netherlands who claimed to be Madeleine McCann had an accomplice in UK, baffling.

Not wanting to derail my own thread but I did know someone who put boiled eggs through her macaroni and cheese. Apparently it makes it delicious

The potato wasn't going in the lasagne - she did explain that. Boiled potatoes with butter were being served alongside a lasagne. There's nothing wrong with that, we've done that ourselves and it's a nice combination.

bcski · 05/01/2026 17:20

I thought the potatoes and lasagna thread was trying to goad the people who are always outraged by how much other people eat. It was hoping to get responses along the lines of "No wonder we have an obesity problem", "People have lost sight of what a reasonable portion is" etc.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 05/01/2026 17:21

In the spirit of the thread, you should watch The Woman Who Wasn’t There - a documentary about a woman who faked being a victim of the 9/11 attacks.

The lengths she went to were incredible; she invented a whole fake fianceè who was supposedly killed, and even started a blog and a support group for other survivors. She even went to the memorial service of another victim.

She wasn’t even in the USA when it actually happened…

Some people seem to need attention and validation so much that they do batshit crazy things to get it.

ilovepixie · 05/01/2026 17:22

People eats chips and lasagna, but buttery boiled potatoes is a bit weird!

hollytheheroic · 05/01/2026 17:24

Donald Trump, enough said.

CatFaceCatFace · 05/01/2026 17:25

I have come across people having chips with their lasagne so boiled potatoes wasn't a huge stretch to me. But yes op, people are mental.

TheatricalLife · 05/01/2026 17:25

For a myriad of reasons from mental health issues, attention seeking, loneliness, low IQ, conspiracy theorists...people have always been this way. It's just more prominent now social media and forums exists. In the 80s/90s and before you were not confronted with it as often as once you were home, you didn't have a computer in your hand 24/7.

Well the theory about the cabal of rich people running the world is not far off if you ask me; especially all of the tech giants who own AI and the rest. They certainly seem to be above the law anyway!

For the rest, there have always been wierdy people who tell lies and make up stuff about being in the SAS, having an incurable illness, or being something they are not; it’s just now they attract more attention on-line when they do it!

Why do they do it? Who knows! Self-delusion? Attention-seeking? Inability to come to terms with the fact that most of us are pretty average and insignificant in the grand scheme of things? Insufficient love as a child or over-indulged? Inability to cope with the realities of ordinary life? Lacking in basic intelligence?
