Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

I haven't read the whole thread because people seem to be talking about lasagne

I have nothing against lasagne, but it's not really a discussion point for me 😂

@veryannoyedtbh yeah I am increasingly weirded out by how weird people are. And the strange things that they genuinely believe. And it's not long ago that I was considered a conspiracy theorist on here.

I agree with the theory that the Internet has made it easier for people to back up their crazy theories. In real life, the main people I've heard saying crazy stuff are men who spend a lot of time online. The only exception to this that I've known was a lady who had a very full life, but then dropped doing a lot of things so she could go home after work and be online straight away. Then she got in trouble at work for constantly browsing on her phone.... I lost touch with her but it's entirely possible that she's worse now. Which is a scary thought.

I think it's really unfortunate that Brigitte Macron felt she had to indulge any of this crazy!

I remember in the 2010s, I was on a bus and two women maybe in their 20s or 30s were talking about a boy band member whose wife had just had a baby and they thought the baby wasn't real. I think there's probably a few actors and singers who have had this experience.

is it just that people are so bored they have to invent more and more outrageous theories? It's creepy.

I find myself thinking that they must be trolling their real life contacts - but again, the question there would be - why?

The Meghan fake babies people are also wild

BarryKentPoet · 05/01/2026 20:02

I didn't think I had an opinion on lasagne until I read the other thread!

Our Walt actually blu-tacked a photo of himself and his 'comrades-in-arms' onto the corner of his computer screen.

Upon closer inspection, I realised that he'd printed out and cut out the regimental crest and had glued it onto a photo of him and his mates dressed up for paintballing.

It's always the elite regiments isn't it @WearyAuldWumman (Guards/Paras/SAS) and they just don't get what very small worlds they are.

Well that or being an Admiral with an unknown to humanity medal award!

Cheese in the bechemal for lasagne is pretty standard And maybe potatoes for a gluten free lasagne?

I think the Internet has allowed all the bonkers people to find each other easily making them more visible and vocal.

The said potatoes (buttery boiled potatoes), were served along side the lasagna with cheese sauce.

Someone has made up a thread about boiled potatoes with lasagne and I just can't deal with anymore internet today.

I know i read half of it and then scrolled omg.

A friend of DH's has been passing himself off on Facebook as a former 'Airborne Ranger' (as in 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite fighting force). In actuality he was in an Airborne Reg, just not the 75th. He was some sort of an admin assistant.

BlackForestCake · 05/01/2026 20:58

Has anyone ever slept with a bloke because he said he was in the SAS?

I think we need a poll.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/01/2026 20:59

@TheCopyist fortunately I haven't met any of those in real life

when people lie about something status related, like example given by @veryannoyedtbh I can at least see what they're going for. They don't have the status so they're going to pretend that they do.

But with people who just target others with really nasty accusations ... I can't see what they want. It just seems to me that they are incredibly unpleasant people and probably have a lot wrong with them. And if they want attention, they do tend to get that.

There are things that I won't discuss here or in real life for exactly that reason.

Oh, it definitely increases the appeal - assuming we're talking about someone who has appeal 😊

the80sweregreat · 05/01/2026 21:00

many years ago you could pretend to be anyone ( mostly)
Much harder these days isn’t it .,

No idea who would do a thing like this. Do you know someone who would? ;-)

2021x · 05/01/2026 21:07

Why did they prosecute the people with Brigette Macron? Who cares if she is or isn't a man?

Luckyingame · 05/01/2026 21:08

Maybe the guy really wanted to be a naval officer and this was the closest he could get to his dream? Maybe his circumstances prevented him from becoming one.
Was anyone hurt while he pretended?

Angelic999 · 05/01/2026 21:09

The ones that really get me are people who lie about having cancer or other incurable illnesses and go to extreme lengths to do so. Often to raise money but also they love the attention. I guess it must stem from insecurity combined with extreme narcisissm - thinking you're so clever by getting 'one up' on the stupid masses who believe your sob story.

The psychology is so interesting, I'd love to have 5 minutes inside the head of someone who does this!

He was a private school boy. I suspect that it never occurred to him that we common folk might possibly have a connection with a cavalry regiment.

Dollymylove · 05/01/2026 18:58

There have always been people who fake military service, Walts they are usually called, as in Walter Mitty.
It's usually easy enough to weed out the fakers, just ask for their forces number, any genuine ex/serviceman/woman never needs to pause to think about it 😁😁

As soon as I read your post I recited my dad’s service number in my head!

The idiot at my work used to use his fake military credentials to try to impress vulnerable young women.

I can't say much more than that, but it came back to bite him on the bum.

veryannoyedtbh · 05/01/2026 17:04

I do like that the Marcon people were formally prosecuted but will it stop people? It’s like a new illness. Yes, you had people who exaggerated etc but now it’s full blown wacko stuff

They were prosecuted for cyberbullying. The man who wrote the book that started the rumours about Brigitte Macron has never been sued by them. I'm not saying his claims are correct but it's interesting.

CrikeyNumpty · 05/01/2026 21:20

It is an offence to wear a uniform you are not entitled to, and that is why he was charged @LuckyingameHe was also wearing medals, although that does not appear to be an offence. It shows massive disrespect to those who did serve, those who lost their lives. He has been doing it for years, and he centres himself into what is meant to be a service commemorating those who have served, been injured or died. So, you might not see it as anyone being hurt, but what would be the point of holding these ceremonies if anyone could just turn up after raiding the dressing up box. Would you say the same about someone pretending to be a fake police officer?

I have skim read the link I posted about the Walter Mitty hunters. There are loads of these guys being exposed, lots of them involved in scams.

She was boiling potatoes for her lasagne and putting cheese in the bechamel. Lasagne is not a complicated dish. Had to be a wind up?!

I sometimes put a bit of cheese in the bechamel … 😬

Why did they prosecute the people with Brigette Macron? Who cares if she is or isn't a man?

I thought she brought a case for online bullying

I don't blame her. I'm slightly puzzled at the description of the charge, but I don't have information about the technicalities

I'm surprised it wasn't defamation of character or something like that - though I suppose somebody accusing you of being a man doesn't count as defamation! 😂

I don't think people should go around just talking complete shite about people... that's not what free speech is about.

so if somebody has put it out there in writing, something completely untrue about you, you should have the right to sue them ... but whether that counts as a private matter, private litigation, who pays for it, I don't really know.

Who is that crazy footballer who said weird things about Jeremy Vine? I think the free speech thing gets a bit complicated here. I'm not going to repeat some of the things I think was said because I'm not clear on the facts. I do remember looking at Twitter at the time and thinking that the footballer in question must've have had his account hacked - but no, he really said those things

Again, what the hell are these people on?!

My neighbour did! She moved him in too!
