Reading about the man who faked being a naval officer to attend memorial events. The lengths he went to, getting a suit altered and buying medals of the internet. Was a professional teacher as well. Madness.

Then the ten people prosecuted for saying Brigitte Macron was born a man. Again, the efforts involved and they mostly appear professional people with full lives. Just mad.

Then you get the people on here pretending with fake stories or just trying to troll people. It’s just bizarre. It’s like validating you are indeed the saddest person ever.

I don’t get it. Is it the internet age? It’s like a boundary has been removed and people in freefall.

Take a look at at the current thread about lockdown. There's an extraordinary number of people seriously claiming it was totally ineffective.

And on the other side of the coin, remember how insane people were being on here during lockdown? My favourite was posters telling others to put cheese in their coffee because they’d be murdering people if they went and bought milk, but there was tons of even more batshit posts, too.

It's very odd. I suspect most (on here) do it for attention as they can't get it any other way.

Is it possible that she also had a tea bag or some instant coffee in her kit. She may be an only ever hot water in the flask person. DH is one also.

That would explain the milk and then, y'know why not a nice cup too.

Edited

Milk in drinks from a flask tastes horrible, it's the reason that in th'olden days a lot of flasks had a little bottle in the screwed on base for carrying milk.

That man who went to the Remembrance Service said he wanted a sense of belonging. He had no armed service at all. He has been spotted at other services too. He had a uniform altered to suit high rank in the Navy (posed as a Rear Admiral no less, no lowly rank for him) and bought medals which were his downfall because he was wearing two that had never been awarded to one person before. He also just went up to the Mayoral party and placed himself dead centre in the photos. He was caught by an organisation called The Walter Mitty Something or other - they look out for these types and grass them up. So there are others doing it. Rightfully so, he had zero rights to be there in an official capacity- he could have just turned up in the crowd like any other punter. He wanted the attention. Idiot. It’s like those guys who say they were in the SAS, this is usually said to reel in women. The SAS must have the biggest military squad in the world, the amount of men who have claimed to be ex SAS.

There must be some mental illness at play. Or severe boredom with their real lives.

I am also baffled by the Macron story.

Also, that girl from Netherlands who claimed to be Madeleine McCann had an accomplice in UK, baffling.

I do know people who really were in the SAS. Basically anyone who openly says they were in the SAS..........wasn't.

I was thinking the same thing.

Me too! I didn't get to the end but most of what was suggested was a no, that's weird 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve had chips with lasagna , but I don’t make it with potatoes. (I do need to find this thread though !)
I agree that some are bonkers, but others are just deceitful. The amount of people taken in by con men and women show how good some are at it as well as the lengths they go to too. I often wonder if they have a kink in their brains or if it was a bad childhood or just for the kicks. People and how they behave is just odd. The man with the medals was disrespectful to those who genuinely were veterans, but it’s also easy to feel a bit sorry for him too. He clearly needs some help.

Search for 'I've made lasagna without the lasagne.

And all the men pretending to be women and poncing about on videos with scary makeup, cheap wigs, and lifting their leg behind them as if this is the most female thing ever.

I think im a pretty logical person, I am high in common sense, im laid back, happy to go along with things and I think im a pretty well rounded person not much upsets me but I can't stand stupid people or people lacking in common sense. But i am also bonkers to the outside world because of my family size. To me its normal, I love it, I do it all well. But ask those around us that I must have a mental health illness for wanting to keep adding to my family. Though I wouldnt every hurt anyone else or make someone's business my business. I definitely wouldnt go around posting fake things for likes or airing out my dirty laundry online.

An earlier poster said that the actual writer of the book about Brigitte has not been sued. That is interesting.

Edited

His name is Xavier Poussard the book was called Becoming Brigitte. When I first heard the claims I thought it was batshit but then the Macrons decided to sue Candace Owens and the Streisand effect kicked in so I watched the series CO did based on the book. The evidence is quite compelling but it's easy to make a compelling case if you only present information which supports your claim. What's more interesting for me is that none of the court cases have ever dealt with the substance of the claims, they always deal with something else, a small inaccuracy, hurt feelings etc and if course Xavier Poussard has never been sued.

I don't know what the truth is but the reaction to something most people would have assumed is crazy makes me wonder.

I don’t know how to say this without sounding patronising but some people are either not blessed with huge intelligence, or they didn’t have stable, consistently loving parents who pointed out life’s realities and dangers to them, and/or they cannot or choose not to, distinguish between delusions in their own head and reality, or they have a weak spot that makes them vulnerable.

For example, there is a middle-aged lady in my village who is extremely competent and impressive in many ways (think self employed hairdresser, care-giver or dog groomer type job) who drives around visiting people in their homes and is successful and popular with her clients. So by definition, she is trained and competent in her trade, she can drive, do accounts, interact and be personable on a professional basis.

BUT she also fell for a scam whereby a young man from the Congo, twenty-four years her junior, apparently fell in love with her on-line and wanted to marry her. Unfortunately, she sent him enormous amounts of money over two years. We tried to kindly warn her to be careful, and that he may not be who says he is, but she wanted to believe it so much that she wouldn’t hear it.

And to an extent I think it is the same with all of these delusions. Some like the Macron one are obviously politically motivated, but many are just people latching on to a certain theory because it makes them feel safe or gives them an ego boost in a very complicated, rather brutal and unsettling world

In the spirit of the thread, you should watch The Woman Who Wasn’t There - a documentary about a woman who faked being a victim of the 9/11 attacks.

The lengths she went to were incredible; she invented a whole fake fianceè who was supposedly killed, and even started a blog and a support group for other survivors. She even went to the memorial service of another victim.

She wasn’t even in the USA when it actually happened…

Some people seem to need attention and validation so much that they do batshit crazy things to get it.

Edited

Sadly, the man she claimed was her fiancé, was a real person who died, which made it even more despicable. She also told real victims that they hadn’t suffered as much as her. Disgusting person that she is.

I do find that when I wake at 3am I often find myself noticing delusional patterns of thinking from the past (e.g. kidding myself that a partner was not as dreadful as he seemed, or thinking some reckless step was a great idea). I think we're all capable of it, or maybe it's just me!

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 12:05

I often beat myself up over past decisions I can now see where not good or ill advised, but I wasn’t good at listening and thought I knew best. I can only blame myself really, but it can drive you mad not being able to move on. It’s not the end of the world, but others seem to just do life better I think .

Yes I think I could be considered a bit eccentric too - partly because of our business - however I do think there’s a big difference between being ‘a character’ and being an utter weirdo fantasist and it’s the rise of these that are concerning -

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2026 12:10

People used to laugh at David Icke who said that some people are lizard people ( Royals I think he mentioned once) but people can and do believe all sorts don’t they.

MyPetLampshade · 07/01/2026 12:47

In the theme of folk who make things up, I had a few dates with a woman who had been in the military. She stayed an extra night at mine so she could watch the memorial service. I had to stay up all night with her rubbing her back and comforting her on bonfire night as the fireworks triggered her from being in Afghanistan. She had photos of herself in army uniform and talked about her times there.

She even went so far as to invite me to be her plus one to a related event where she'd apparently be receiving some award or other. Quite lavish I was told so duly donned a ballgown and heels.
Got there, and it was in a sort of hut. I was freezing! And quite bewildered/bemused. There were some awards given out, my date did not get one! Then it was a 3 hour drive home back to her house-the 'do' was closer to mine but she had insisted I stay over at hers the night before as it would be easier.

I 100% knew it was a load of twaddle. She was very overweight (not in itself a problem for me but does not work well for military activity) and had a childhood injury to her foot which meant walking was painful and she'd had multiple operations, she was not fit for the army!

Unfortunately for me, she was phenomenal in bed. So I put up with this tripe for a fair while.

NerrSnerr · 07/01/2026 13:50

I had two colleagues in the early 2000s who were massive fantasists. One lady told us all her adult son was dying of cancer. He didn’t have cancer and was not dying. It was a small town so no idea how she thought she’d get away with it. I worked with a nurse who told so many lies. He was in his late 40s and clearly in a tough financial position (had moved in with his daughter, drove a falling apart banger and was doing many, many, bank shifts). He told us he’d had his range of Indian snacks approved to sell in M&S and had a massive advance, he was on the pathway to be an international cricketer but body building stunted his growth, he was the co-owner of a private forensic hospital and sold his shares for £££, there were loads more. Anything that came up in conversation he had either made a million from it or had done it to the highest level. I often wonder where he is now but he’s got a very common name so can’t track him down.

I currently know a man who has some serious delusions of grandeur. He’s different though, he’s had a brain injury a few years back and clearly has some kind of mood disorder. He’s currently really manic and is talking about making millions on his business and in the next breath about living in alternate universes.

BarbieShrimp · 07/01/2026 14:40

I once met someone, a distant friend-of-a-friend at a party, who was a fantasist of massive proportions. Over one evening, he told me he ran a record company in the states (there was just some minor management conflict which explained why he was living in the UK with no money right now, of course), he knew all kinds of rock stars, and had ridden a horse (or maybe it was a rodeo bull?) with no training at age four.

I ran into him a few months later, and found out that he had recently moved in with a girlfriend. Although she was definitely real, she seemed to be on board with his whole backstory. I had a ghoulish look at their social media, and she was posting about how excited she was about moving to California to start their new life working in the rock 'n' roll music industry.

Obviously the move never happened, but this couple are still together (and not managing a record company) over ten years later. I often wonder if he was lucky enough to find a kindred bullshitter, or just a very gullible person.
