To think this is silly and unfair to slim women/skinnyphobic?

I was looking at this swim dress https://snagtights.com/products/only-one-swim-dress-polka for myself. I'm a rather small woman, 45kg and 162cm tall. I usually wear a 4-8, depending on the brand.

Whereas I'm delighted to see that they make it from a 4-38, all of the several models featured in this dress and seemingly almost all on this site, are obese. This is rather odd to me, and a bit annoying as I cannot see what these items would look like on me - if some items look good on skinny women but not on obese women surely the same also applies regarding some items the other way round.

Also seems unfair to me - if underweight women cannot be models because of 'promotion of unhealthy weights' why are these women not affected as well too? Surely a size 38 is not any more healthy than a 0 or 2.

Skinny hate seems to be on the decline, but still disappointing to see the double standard.

As an obese woman, this is literally the reverse case for virtually every item of clothing I've ever bought online. Even plus size retailers rarely use larger sized models.

You're a size 4-8 and choosing to browse a retailer who is best known for catering for the obese market. You could literally shop at any online or high Street retailer. Let us have our obese models and true body representation this one time!

CookingFatCat · 01/01/2026 04:17

I find this brand has a leaning toward the obese woman in a way which I find unsettling, in the same way I found anorexic bone thin models unsettling.

Neither need to be seen as a norm because they are both unhealthy or fetishised.
Some of the obesity shown on Snag tights is in my opinion, disturbing.

However underweight body representation is banned? isn't this a bit silly

All you're doing is confirming my suspicions that this isn't a genuine thread, so I'm going to take my lardass and exit stage left 👋

Underweight and overweight are not the same thing, especially when it comes to young women/teens. No teen desires to be overweight or put themselves at risk to be obese. interestingly its usually only someone underweight who would try and compare.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 01/01/2026 04:29

Why are you on the website of a retailer that specifically targets the market of plus-size women who struggle to buy well-fitting tights elsewhere? This is hardly skinnyphobia.

Jojo Maman Bebe only sells maternity clothing and children's clothes. Would you accuse them of having a phobia of men wnd childfree women? Would you complain that Mothercare didn't sell babygrows in adult sizes?

I used to be obese, and stuff like this definitely cemented my mindset that it was OK and a healthy state to be in.

Change to a different clothes site. I've never seen a site with universally large-model images but I'm a size 10. Why would I go there?

seeing as this brand makes clothes from size 4 it's hardly comparable

Former obese always have something to say lol
Do you truly not see the difference? Why go on sites geared towards plus sized women?

X123x321X · 01/01/2026 04:39

These women aren't all obese. Some are and some aren't. A large bra-size isn't the same as obesity.

A teen will think obesity is normal and ok and not a problem if it's represented that way. Where I am originally from, the majority is overweight or obese, to the point that people have lost sight of what a healthy weight is and think it looks ill. Same issue.

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/01/2026 04:40

I'd never heard of this brand until the last few days when I saw their ad on TV. It was clearly aimed at the plus size market.

Your reaction to this from your OP is not consistent with someone who has genuinely struggled with obesity as per a subsequent post, so I'm not buying it I'm afraid.

Because they have a nice dress in a size 4?

If they didn't make tights in smaller sizes, goodness knows what you'd accuse them of, then.

Whether or not they make their tights in smaller sizes, it's not their main target market, is it? Snag's USP is that their tights will fit larger women who weren't being catered to elsewhere. If they actively go after the size 6-10 market, they will be competing with all the standard tights stockists. If they don't have smaller models on their site, then they must not think it would be increase profits to do so. They may be wrong, but it's their decision to make.

This isn't even tights, it's a swim dress.

I don't mind plus size companies existing. I myself shop at brandy melville and subdued so I can't see what's wrong with the reverse. I'm just saying that it's a bit odd to not have any smaller models whilst selling smaller clothes.

If you search for swimdresses on Google stepping 95% or more, of the results are of thin women. So no, a solitary website catering to larger sized women isn't unfair.

Then buy it, and send it back if it doesn't fit. It will probably be fine though.

I've never been able to know whether clothes will look nice on me from images in catalogues or websites, either. That's normal.

I assume those thin women aren't 3 stone underweight and dangerously emaciated

Thoseslippers · 01/01/2026 05:06

I'm sorry OP but this is a bit like a man getting angry because he's seen some promotion for international women's day and wants to know why there isn't an international mens day

SouthernNights59 · 01/01/2026 05:10

Welcome to the world of the rest of us! I'm not obese, I'm only just overweight, but I'm sick of seeing clothes modelled by the very slim (and tall) and not being able to see what the garments look like on average sizes.

This. And also, how is it silly and unfair? Like others have said, nearly all retailers feature models who are a size 4-8 so how is it even remotely unfair that one retailer doesn’t? Yes they offer smaller sizes but it’s your choice to engage with a website clearly aimed at plus size women and again your choice to be so outraged. If it’s so abhorrent shop somewhere else.
