To think this is silly and unfair to slim women/skinnyphobic?

I was looking at this swim dress https://snagtights.com/products/only-one-swim-dress-polka for myself. I'm a rather small woman, 45kg and 162cm tall. I usually wear a 4-8, depending on the brand.

Whereas I'm delighted to see that they make it from a 4-38, all of the several models featured in this dress and seemingly almost all on this site, are obese. This is rather odd to me, and a bit annoying as I cannot see what these items would look like on me - if some items look good on skinny women but not on obese women surely the same also applies regarding some items the other way round.

Also seems unfair to me - if underweight women cannot be models because of 'promotion of unhealthy weights' why are these women not affected as well too? Surely a size 38 is not any more healthy than a 0 or 2.

Skinny hate seems to be on the decline, but still disappointing to see the double standard.

You know how Joe Strummer put it:

Is Snag not a thinly (pardon the pun) disguised fetish site anyway??

What is strange is that a brand that clearly advertise itself as catering fir the overweight sells close fir size 4.

They either are a niche brand or they are not. If not, they should indeed show models of all sizes.

Do all their range of clothing offer size 4 or 6?

ShawnaMacallister · 01/01/2026 05:39

Snag is a brand that targets plus size women as its key demographic. It's not wrong for them to use plus size models to show their clothes. Just as regular brands will use slim women as models but also carry plus sizes, snag is the opposite. It's really not that deep and definitely not 'skinnyphobic'.

Why should they though? Do you see size 30 models wearing brands that carry that size? Almost never. Even plus size brands don't have models much above a size 18 in their advertising.

Passaggressfedup · 01/01/2026 05:42

So I had a better look and indeed, they offer all their clothes at size 4 or 6, so why only show overweight ladies? I'm with you OP.

On a positive note though, size 4 is the oy one left available, so it might be doing you a favour by nit showing pictures! Personally, I find their clothes quite hideous!

They have a range of different sized models. You can clearly see on their website. There are definitely thinner models. Not all of their models are plus size. However it does seem to be their target demographic. Unfortunately the item OP wanted was not modelled by one of the thinner models I guess. I'm sure she will live.

My experience is that few companies offer clothes that range from size 4 to 30. It tends to be size 8 (even size 6 is harder to get nowadays), to size 22. And in that instance, models tend to look more size 16.

That's true, there are slimmer models.

Exactly. The models are almost always tall, curvy, well toned sizes 16-18s.

So bearing little resemblence to the typical 5'4 size 20 middle aged women who buy their clothes.

SergeantWrinkles · 01/01/2026 05:57

Skinny women have been the darlings of the fashion world forever! Im 5’1” and 60kg with an hourglass shape an no one has ever made clothes properly to fit my frame. I’m sure you’ll cope OP

Very interesting! I’ve always heard it as, “The greatest zealot is the convert.” Example: Paul. Totally off topic, but this is a thing in American evangelical Christian circles - the amount of women who had an abortion themselves, but THEN become “pro-life” for everyone else, is absolutely ridiculous.

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 01/01/2026 06:04

skinnyphobianamechange · 01/01/2026 04:31

seeing as this brand makes clothes from size 4 it's hardly comparable

They didn't use to go that small in their sizes. Maybe it is because their tights - they started up only selling tights - are so bloomin' brilliant (they seem to stretch in all directions!), people with smaller clothes sizes asked them to do them in their sizes as well, and they have got so popular now, that they apparently stock them in even smaller sizes? If any of their products don't sell well enough, they stop selling them.

I don't believe that anyone actually likes being morbidly obese, and I can assure you that their extremely obese models do not make any of us fatties, however fat we may be, look at those extremely obese ladies and think "oh, I wish I was that big!" Or "Wow, she looks stunning!". What I, (and I expect many of us obese women) feel when we see those photos, is firstly, empathy, and secondly, a determination to not let ourselves get that big!

My hope for the models modelling the extreme sizes, is that they don't read articles, or threads like this one, and then suddenly realise that they are not on the safe website that they thought they were. The snug website may be the only place where they feel that they can be properly themselves, and they may even allow themselves to show their playful, and sexy - but sadly mainly buried - innermost feelings. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the very largest of the models, and the very largest of snags customers, hardly ever go out in real life due to being ridiculed, and much worse than 'just' being ridiculed:

eg "Oi you, what are you, are you some sort of mutated animal?", or "For fucks sake, what are you doing out, shouldn't you be kept in a cage at the circus, or maybe in the whale enclosure at the zoo?" or "I hope you're on the way to the abattoir, as that's all you are fit for" or "God! What sort of monster are you, please go and fucking kill yourself, no-one wants to have to look at you!"

If you think those sort of comments are very rare, please believe me when I tell you they are very sadly not. They are enough to make some overweight people contemplate committing suicide. So @skinnyphobianamechange if you, or anyone else, thinks that seeing very fat women on a website that was originally made to cater to obese women, will make anyone else want to be that size, then I don't know what reality you live in, as it isn't the one most of us reside in.

I used to be obese, and stuff like this definitely cemented my mindset that it was OK and a healthy state to be in.

Stop making things up 🤣

If you search for swimdresses on Google stepping 95% or more, of the results are of thin women. So no, a solitary website catering to larger sized women isn't unfair.

I've just googled 'swim dresses' and can't see a 'thin' model anywhere. Slim and healthy weight models? But there's plus size models right at the top too. As it should be. A good mix of bodies! I'm a healthy weight. 5'4 and size 6-8. I don't care what other people look like but I do care about unhealthy norms for teens and girls whether that's normalising obesity or undereating and comparative skinny-ness.

live and let live people!

They’ve found their target market and that’s what they cater to, I don’t complain I can’t get a pie at a Chinese takeaway. Just find somewhere else to shop.

Pumpkinmagic · 01/01/2026 06:26

I don’t understand why it’s okay to have obese and morbidly obese models, it’s so unhealthy, to me it’s promoting over eating and unhealthy eating and no different to promoting smoking, excessive alcohol or drugs. Absolutely agree with OP.
