To think this is silly and unfair to slim women/skinnyphobic?

I was looking at this swim dress https://snagtights.com/products/only-one-swim-dress-polka for myself. I'm a rather small woman, 45kg and 162cm tall. I usually wear a 4-8, depending on the brand.

Whereas I'm delighted to see that they make it from a 4-38, all of the several models featured in this dress and seemingly almost all on this site, are obese. This is rather odd to me, and a bit annoying as I cannot see what these items would look like on me - if some items look good on skinny women but not on obese women surely the same also applies regarding some items the other way round.

Also seems unfair to me - if underweight women cannot be models because of 'promotion of unhealthy weights' why are these women not affected as well too? Surely a size 38 is not any more healthy than a 0 or 2.

Skinny hate seems to be on the decline, but still disappointing to see the double standard.

Thought everyone knew of this fact

You can't, it's a struggle to get clothes in high street brands that are a 4 or 6. Most places start at 8 unless online.

This is true.

If you’re a 4 or a 6 it’s actually quite hard to find clothes that fit - many of the brands for women (as opposed to teen brands) are off limits as they only go down to 8, or the sizing is so generous a 6 is too big.

I bought a jumper off there that was supposedly equivalent to size 10. It was massive and hung down to my knees so early they don't make stuff for slim women. That was my one and only purchase oh other than tights which were ok.

Agreed. I bought a put of tights from there using their size calculator and they were massively baggy and actually crap quality.
Vanity sizing to the extreme.

Yeah, no dice OP. Nice try. Went on a mini education session about lipoedema this morning, followed by a wander through the Snag website. Not only did I find a number of models who fit the disease symptoms, I also found models of all shapes and sizes with very little difference in styling between the slim and fat models. Was actually really nice to see. Snag's ethics - including a living wage for everyone working for them in the UK and vetted factories paid fairly for their products AKA no slavery/ exploitation present in the supply chain - are admirable and worth supporting.

So unless this is a reverse ad for Snag, I suggest the problem is with you. Perhaps some therapy as to why you feel hatred toward fat people existing, and daring to want clothes that look nice on them, might be helpful.

ForeverScout · 01/01/2026 21:58

Can't edit for some reason, but just to say there's no slavery / exploitation in the process of making the clothes - supply chain of raw materials might be different and difficult to track. Regardless, the effort of vetting factories and ensuring fair pay for the work done is refreshing - if they live up to this claim Snag is doing good work in an industry rife with westerners making bank off human misery elsewhere.

Thank you to the only other person who understands what Snag is about! It started as a brand founded by a women with Lipoedema for other women with Lipoedema, as I said before and was duly ignored. Believe me as someone who is now Stage 3, getting your legs into High Street tights is nigh on impossible.

It's bad enough being disfigured while the NHS ignores you, then in extreme cases disabled while the NHS ignores you, and then be blamed for it all and offered mobility aids to deal with the disability by the same NHS that could have stopped your progression with treatment it declines to fund, without other women being offended by the few companies that understand the issues sufferers face.

OP, frankly you need to grow up a little and educate yourself about the devastating health issues others can face!

Barnbrack · 02/01/2026 12:20

Gosh op, the larger women among us definitely won't be able to understand how it might feel to never see a body similar to ours wearing clothes and to have to use our imagination. Whatever does that feel like you poor thing?

Barnbrack · 02/01/2026 12:24

skinnyphobianamechange · 01/01/2026 04:30

I used to be obese, and stuff like this definitely cemented my mindset that it was OK and a healthy state to be in.

So you're now underweight? Is that due to an eating disorder?

Barnbrack · 02/01/2026 12:24

I've been a size 4-6 most of my life and I'm definitely not underweight. I'm under a few medical teams due to cancer and heart conditions and my BMI has never come up once to say I'm underweight. I'm naturally quite petite anyway but just because someone's a 4-6 it doesn't mean they're underweight at all.

the only time I have been underweight was when I was having cancer treatment that left me in a coma.

that being said I think it's unusual for someone who was obese to go to a size 4-6 but I don't know enough about that so many I'm being harsh.

You have many health challenges by the sound of it but yes huge weight variation is the red flag for me not clothes size.

The op gave her height and weight in the first post which puts her bmi as underweight.

BMI is outdated and non specific.

BringBackCatsEyes · 03/01/2026 23:10

hehhehhehBOOMBOOM · 03/01/2026 21:11

BMI is outdated and non specific.

It's a pretty good tool for measuring underweight people.
People go on about it not working for them because they are so muscly or broad or what have you. This cannot be said for someone who is a good 3kg lower than the lowest point of the healthy BMI range.
OP has gone from a BMI of at least 30 to 17.

nomas · 03/01/2026 23:24

Welcome to my world. As an Asian woman, I hardly see ever clothes modelled on Asian models, so I can never see what they look like on someone with my colouring.

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:02

If this is “skinnyphobic” then all the sites (i.e most of them) which only show clothes on skinny models are “fatphobic”.

I don’t see the issue with this one site bucking the trend.

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:04

Also I am pretty sure snag tights are especially targeted at plus sized women hence their choice of models.

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:06

DecafSoyaLatteExtraShotPlease · 01/01/2026 04:16

As an obese woman, this is literally the reverse case for virtually every item of clothing I've ever bought online. Even plus size retailers rarely use larger sized models.

You're a size 4-8 and choosing to browse a retailer who is best known for catering for the obese market. You could literally shop at any online or high Street retailer. Let us have our obese models and true body representation this one time!

This!!!

Also OP - “skinnyhate” is not and never has been a thing.

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:06

skinnyphobianamechange · 01/01/2026 04:22

However underweight body representation is banned? isn't this a bit silly

Where is it banned?

It’s not a privilege!! It’s a reward for hard work and it’s available to the vast majority of the population.

Oh it’s that easy? Thanks for sharing.

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:09

sidneytweeney · 01/01/2026 10:06

Of course, but no one is naturally obese. That’s a consequence (in the vast majority) of laziness and bad habits.

Oh this tired trope - all fat people are “lazy”…..

Yawn

Dollyfloss · 04/01/2026 00:11

CookingFatCat · 01/01/2026 04:17

I find this brand has a leaning toward the obese woman in a way which I find unsettling, in the same way I found anorexic bone thin models unsettling.

Neither need to be seen as a norm because they are both unhealthy or fetishised.
Some of the obesity shown on Snag tights is in my opinion, disturbing.

I don’t even click on the links for brands like these as I just think they’re for larger people. It doesn’t bother me at all but I would think they should include thinner women in their advertising too if they do standard sizes? They must be losing out on that market I would think?

WinterWooliesBaa · 04/01/2026 00:14

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/01/2026 04:40

I'd never heard of this brand until the last few days when I saw their ad on TV. It was clearly aimed at the plus size market.

Your reaction to this from your OP is not consistent with someone who has genuinely struggled with obesity as per a subsequent post, so I'm not buying it I'm afraid.

Agreed!

BringBackCatsEyes · 04/01/2026 07:29

JHound · 04/01/2026 00:06

Where is it banned?

I think quite a few counties have laws banning using models with very low BMIs.
