Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

Unlikely anyone on here will know. Have you challenged them about it directly?

Thoseslippers · 30/12/2025 22:02

Maybe its because the tap and the flush are so noisy and they dont want to wake you?

Clasaassa · 30/12/2025 22:03

You kind of sound like you hate them and the handwashing is just one thing you’re looking out for to give you the further ick.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/12/2025 22:05

They clearly don't wash their hands to annoy the fuck out of you.

It certainly doesn’t help.

I do think this is why fil perhaps didn’t flush. However there’s no excuse not to wash your hands. Should have added this as context- but this is an ongoing thing that I’ve noticed for years. They never wash their hands.

Is this just a night thing? Some boilers are very loud and they may worry about waking you up.

I think its odd not to - but if this is the worst problem u have with them count yourself lucky.

Previously I’ve breezily / cheerily said to fil - ‘don’t forget to wash your hands!’
’I’d wash your hands if I were you with all of the kids colds going around’
and he’s sheepishly washed them.

Why should I have to parent people in their 70’s?

I only wash my hands after a wee in public places not in my own home

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 30/12/2025 22:12

Don’t serve food that they will touch. Organised it so they don’t. Ask Mil/Pil to ‘take the DC to wash their hands before we eat please.’

Are they ill a lot?

Edited

It’s definitely not the worst problem but it’s weirdly the one I’ve chosen to fixate on tonight 😅

Our boiler isn’t loud. It’s only a few years old. House itself is pretty large (we have zoned heating) and the boiler doesn’t create near enough noise to disturb bedrooms. But you can hear the tap being turned on and off if you’re a hormonal ball of rage laying in bed listening for it.

I've always been obsessed with handwashing and don’t understand why people aren’t obsessed with it either

my nephew never washed his hands whilst living with me. I bluntly told him so you’ve just touched your dick and now you are wiping it all over my house and passing me stuff

i am never usually that bold about anything but why don’t random men get this

Yes they are ill a lot. They’ve arrived here with a cold. Thankfully I think it’s one we’ve already had- we’ve had about 3 in the last month so it has to be right? 🥲

I personally wouldn’t actually clock if someone washed their hands after using the loo .

Itsmetheflamingo · 30/12/2025 22:16

Mine don’t either! It’s gross but you can’t tell 2 adults to wash their hands, it’s up to them.

Yeah to be fair I do tend to wash my hands at other peoples houses.

Bloodyscarymary · 30/12/2025 22:18

I don’t know why they don’t OP, but I offer my sympathies and solidarity as a fellow hand washer. When I am in public bathrooms I am absolutely appalled by the amount of people who swan out without even touching upon the sink zone. I just don’t get it - imagine the grossest thing someone could do in a bathroom… well that’s probably what you’re touching as you unlock the door.

Horrorscope · 30/12/2025 22:18

Dirty hands in the salad. Grimsville 🦠😬

It really gets to me. I think because it’s such a simple act yet a lack of it says so much about a person!

@youalright agree - and I get the justification you probably make that your bathroom is clean so why bother…. However the opportunity to wash your hands after bathroom use protects others from your poop and wee particles and offers a timely moment to wash your hands from the general detritus of the day which builds up. Take it!

I always wash my hands after a poo or if im on my period. I always wash my hands before and after preparing food. But just a quick wee in my own home I don't think its necessary. People need some germs.
