Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

mintandcoral · 30/12/2025 21:47

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

I only wash my hands after a wee in public places not in my own home

🤮
gross

Kisskiss · 30/12/2025 22:48

This is grossing me out, and they’re staying with you so touching and spreading everything everywhere….
brrr

No and come to think of it they don’t have hand wash at their house either or worktop spray- something my dh has commented on (he has repeatedly acknowledged their lack of hygiene). I cut my visits to theirs nearly two years ago now because of it.

We have salad servers but they’ll often ignore implements and go straight in for stuff with their fingers. The worst was when they sat at the end of a Sunday dinner and both picked at the rest of the roast chicken with their hands. It was years ago now but it’s burned into my brain.

Dear god, I have every sympathy with you. I couldn't restrain myself from saying something if I was you. They sound like animals.

This Thread exactly reminds me why I know that the minority of general public are revolting! Now at supermarkets in my area all chilled items are behind a door to the chilled cabinet… so not only do I have to touch where every other piddle, poo and norovirus fingers have had their hands it’s then all over the items that get taken into our home and fridge!!

for those of you who don’t believe in washing your hands… there are enough particles in a pinhead sized droplet of norovirus to infect 100,00 people… just let that sink in next time you’re eating with your unwashed hands

So when you go for your 3am wee and you're desperately trying to stay asleep do you really wash your hands in the dark

My PIL's were the same - both now dead. Never washed their hands. I never knew my MIL to take a shower or bath either. FIL rarely and used to do a lot of sport as well. They were quite disgusting. I have trained their son well!

They probably won’t take a shower during their visit either- it’ll be 4 days and mil will have a sink strip wash (which I think is perfectly fine actually) but fil does usually start to smell by day 3.

I forget now but I literally had to train my dh in most aspects of household cleanliness- like I was teaching a child. I don’t think my mil has ever bought a can of furniture polish in her life.

Have you ever seen a supermarket warehouse id be more worried about rats pissing on food packaging then people who haven't washed there hands

Perrylobster · 30/12/2025 22:52

I had a friend like this and in the end I stopped wanting to spend time with her. Her children were always ill with vomiting bugs or colds and she just thought it was normal. They were always being sick.

youalright · 30/12/2025 22:53

I'd be curious to know all the people who think its gross to not wash your hands after a wee let there dogs lick there faces and mouths 🤢

shhblackbag · 30/12/2025 22:53

I'm amazed at how many don't wash their hands. It's basic hygiene. Gross.

Touch wood we are rarely ill

AIBUptight · 30/12/2025 22:54

My FIL eating crisps and dip turns my stomach, his fingers end up in the dip, then he licks/sucks the dip off them before going straight back in with more crisp fragments stuck to his fingers. Absolutely rancid. Luckily he never cooks or prepares any food or even makes a cup of tea for himself or anyone else - which also infuriates me, but on the other hand I wouldn’t touch anything he’d made so 🤷‍♀️

I’ve noticed probably only 50% of women wash hands after going to the loo

Tink3rbell30 · 30/12/2025 22:47

I would say something as they are spreading germs all over your house, door handles etc. I have had this and I said something like "Hands to be washed please!" and aggressively sprayed Dettol on the door handles etc. It is the most basic of hygiene. As if people are also admitting they do the same.. touching the flush and lid that people touch after a poo then not washing their hands 🤢

I think they already think I’m uptight/stuck up. I’m not sure how to style this out without just reinforcing that.

Previously I’ve done the breezy ‘remember to wash your hands!’ But I have to catch them in the act for this to work and it feels so infantilising.

I don’t think I can mention this to dh at the moment. I’ve been far too critical of them previously and even though he agrees with a lot of what I’m saying, I think it’s hard for him to repeatedly hear and have to acknowledge. It needs to be realised by/come from him really.

So when you go for your 3am wee and you're desperately trying to stay asleep do you really wash your hands in the dark

I have a dim light that comes on with a sensor when I enter the toilet/bathroom and I wash my hands. It probably doesn’t even take 10 seconds.

OP posts:
UnusualOtter · 30/12/2025 22:59

I don't wash my hands after going to the loo at night, and don't necessarily flush. I wash my hands before eating and before food prep, and after coming in from outside.
When you think about it what have you actually touched that needs to be washed off when you do a wee? I don't wipe.my bits with my bare hands. I use enough paper that no wee is on my hands. I don't touch the seat with my hands.

youalright · 30/12/2025 22:59

Then you're not washing them properly it should be a minimum of 20 seconds. I may not be washing them as often as you but I am washing them properly when I do

SparklingCrow · 30/12/2025 23:01

youalright · 30/12/2025 22:42

Why? Everyone in my household has been inside me one way or another i don't think they are worried about my germs its family

Do you think that’s why so many women feel so invaded and ‘touched out’ all the time?

But why? Am genuinely interested. Are you getting wee on your hands when you do a wee?

Obviously I wash them for longer before I do things like meal prep/eat. I wash them for longer if I’m going to the loo during the day- and wash them for a considerable amount of time if I’m using a public toilet! My 10 seconds when I’ve been to the loo in the middle of the night is far better than your nothing.

OP posts:
HowAboutNowJane · 30/12/2025 23:04

I don't wash my hands if I get up for a wee in the night as dh is a light sleeper but I do use hand sanitizer, and the first thing I do when I get up is go to the loo and subsequently wash my hands.

I was never brought up to wash my hands before eating, and I was rarely sick as a child.
