Peri peri menopausal.

AIBU to think this is a great joke? My partner came up with it this morning and isn't as proud of it as I think he should be.

YANBU - it's hilarious
YABU - it's only worthy of a cheap Christmas cracker

Are you suggesting that women of any age can be peri (peri) menopausal?

midsomermurderer · 30/12/2025 11:46

Q: What do you call a middle aged woman in Nandos?

A: Seeking a break from her husbands shit chat

ArseSkinForAFriend · 30/12/2025 11:46

It made me smile but I had to go with YABU because obviously it's not 'hilarious' 🤭

Cheepcheepcheep · 30/12/2025 11:46

I liked it!

DefinitelyNotMaybe · 30/12/2025 11:47

What does he want, a medal? Here, have the Grand Order of Misogynist Shite 🥉

ChocolateLemons · 30/12/2025 11:47

What do you call a middle aged white man in Nandos?

CEO

TrumpDerangementSyndrome · 30/12/2025 11:47

Cringing inside out for you OP. Ageist sexist unfunny claptrap.

FarmGirl78 · 30/12/2025 11:47

Oh please. Unclench. I'm peri menopausal and found it funny. There's nothing derogatory or malicious in it. This really is the stuff of people looking for things to be offended by. Have a day off.

Calm down

Crabapplepiechart · 30/12/2025 11:48

Deary me, I didn't think acknowledging basic female biology would get him accused of being a misogynist AND an ageist!

OP posts:
ArseSkinForAFriend · 30/12/2025 11:48

According to Google is a joke by British comedian Gary Delaney.

ThePieceHall · 30/12/2025 11:48

I am glad I am single.

shhblackbag · 30/12/2025 11:48

It's pretty cringe.

Toastythesnowman · 30/12/2025 11:49

I've seen variations of this so many times on Instagram over the last week. What do 40+ women like on their sandwich? Peri peri mayonnaise

He didn't invent it. Don't be so easily impressed.

shhblackbag · 30/12/2025 11:50

ThePieceHall · 30/12/2025 11:48

Same.

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 30/12/2025 11:50

YABU for believing he came up with that himself.

Old joke.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 30/12/2025 11:51

Replies once again proving that what everyone else says about Mumsnet is true 🤭

It's a Christmas cracker joke for sure, OP - funny, but not as funny as watching the outraged (dare I say peri menopausal? 🤭) women racing to condemn him, and you, and men in general.

Yep and if you agree it’s funny they’ll say you’re trying to be a “cool wife” 🙄

ArseSkinForAFriend · 30/12/2025 11:48

Yep. Sorry OP but you DH didn’t come up with it. There’s several variations on this. Gary Delaneys versions is:

What do you call the area in a Nando’s between the front and back door?

The Peri-peri-neum!

Now that’s clever.

MagpieOak · 30/12/2025 11:59

Where are people finding ageism, sexism, and/or misogyny in “peri peri menopausal”?

I’d genuinely appreciate if someone who has called this joke/OPs DH any of these things could explain the thought process behind labelling a (what I thought was a relatively inoffensive) dad-style joke like this!

Hoppinggreen · 30/12/2025 12:01

Neither
I don't find it offensive, just not funny

CasperGutman · 30/12/2025 12:03

It made me smile momentarily but it's not hilarious.

I didn't see it as misogynistic or ageist though. There's obviously a strong association between peri-menopause and being a "woman of a certain age". The joke doesn't mock or criticise women. I'd be interested in why others find it problematic.

I wonder if the issue is partly that the OP's partner is male? Would the joke have landed better if the source was female? Would it come off OK from, say, Jo Brand or Sarah Millican?

Jokes that are seen as punching down in that they are made at the expense of groups that are or have been targets of discrimination are bad, but does this joke punch down? It's just a mild bit of wordplay and doesn't really punch at all, does it?

ETA: basically, what @MagpieOak said!
