To refuse to drive even though I MAY be under limit?

I’ve known ‘D’P for around 9 months. We don’t live together.
I’ve divided my time over Christmas driving between him and my friends and family,
Today we’d arranged that I would stay at his.
Things have been a bit tense lately due to a hopefully temporary restriction on his driving ( health related), but today has been great.
We have been happy staying in and chilling, cooking together, lots of laughter. For the first time this Christmas I’ve been able to have a couple of alcoholic drinks.
Around 10 minutes ago his adult son phoned him for a lift. Clearly he couldn’t do this but instead of saying no, or suggesting a taxi he seemed to expect that I would do it.
I said no, I had had alcohol and would not be driving.
He started off trying to persuade me, saying I probably wasn’t over the limit, he would have done it if it wasn’t for his medical problem, etc.
I have been driving for many years and I never drive after drinking alcohol. I could possibly have had a glass or two of wine over Christmas, but I didn’t as I feel that there is no safe limit.
Things progressed and he is getting more insistent and unreasonable.
I’ve shut myself in the bathroom to get away and gather my thoughts.

Well done op and thankyou for coming back to update us.

What an arrogant idiot he is to have lost you in that way and to also think he could get you back to be his chauffeur!

Out of interest, did he drive over to speak to you?

I only thought about how he got here after he’d left. There was no car on my drive so he/ whoever drove must have parked down the road.
I had sort of assumed that his car might have been seized when he was stopped by police, but maybe not as he also mentioned being tempted to drive.

I’m sorry you had to deal with that @Didntwenearlyhaveitall but well done for not being dragged back in to it. Hope you’re ok.

Canadian Lol GIF

He said he needed my rational approach to stop him being tempted to drive again.

Is that what they are calling taxi services these days???
And you, a good temperate woman are what he needs to avoid temptation and curb his driving impulses 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What an absolute clown.

OP you are a good woman and you raised a good son.
Close this chapter and consider it a bad life choice and a lesson learned...

Thank you for updating, I was watching and waiting that night too!

I can’t believe that he actually turned up telling you a load of crap, with the intention you’d suddenly put your uber hat back on, genuinely I am stunned.

Also the fact he did not reach out before he was caught driving just shows his selfish intentions.

AND this shows the trod of person he is to have driven recently- he could have killed somebody.

I bet he went to get the son that night.

WaryHiker · 18/01/2026 02:49

You should have told him you were glad that he would be driving again soon because you had just sold your car for financial reasons and the purchaser was picking it up the following morning. Wasn't it great that he would soon be able to ferry you around wherever you needed to go?

PoppyWarrior · 18/01/2026 04:25

Oh well done OP. So glad you got the "ick".

I love a good update I do ;)

All the best for the New Year.

Ps you raised a good son there! :)

I bet he drove and parked the car further down the road! What a cheek to show up on your doorstep. Least he apologised, but doesn’t appear genuine. Glad he got caught. No doubt he was trying to reel you back in, so glad you sent him packing.

Yes, he was definitely trying to reinstate his free chauffeuring services.
He complimented me on being sensible that night, and actually thanked me for hiding his keys.
He said he needed my rational approach to stop him being tempted to drive again. I didn’t believe a word. He just wanted me to ferry him everywhere.

So it’s your fault that he got caught driving as you weren’t around to give him your rational approach? ODFOXP.

Well rid, OP. I hope he leaves you alone from now on.

I'd be willing to bet he drove himself and parked where his vehicle couldn't be seen. Or perhaps his son drove him.

Good on you for listening and then turning him away. Chances are he won't importune you again.

Shinyandnew1 · 18/01/2026 17:30

He needed your chauffeur services more like 😂

PeachySmile2 · 18/01/2026 23:06

A traumatic night but a blessing in disguise!

I don't think he could - OP hidden his keys before leaving to stop him.

KittyWilkinson · 19/01/2026 01:03

Thanks for the update. I hope that you are proud of yourself for not falling for his renewed bullshit. I'm really glad that you told him to jog on.
Have a great year free from that selfish plonker!

UninitendedShark · 19/01/2026 08:26

Well I never! He’s in even more of a driving pickle now is he? Stupid man. As atrocious as it all was I’m glad the mask slipped and he’s got a one way ticket to dumpsville. You live and learn. The invitation to be rational for him in the face of his stupidity was obviously extremely temping I assume? The shouting didn’t get you to drive for him so flattery would..? The mind boggles.

Stucknstoopit · 19/01/2026 09:11

What an utter douche. I love when they come back and not only remind you why you ended it but now you can’t see what you saw in them in the first place
