I am not talking about cost or expecting anything extravagant, more the thought behind them.

Mine: an engraved metal bookmark with someone else’s name on it plus a bunch of dried flowers complete with the Poundland label still attached.

Honesty I would rather receive nothing.

Oh that's dreadful. 😞

RosieLeaLovesTea · 25/12/2025 08:34

Wow who got you that? I cannot believe they gave you a gift with someone else’s name on it.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/12/2025 08:34

Who on earth gave you those? Just about acceptable if from a small child otherwise they would go straight in the bin.

MamaJenni · 25/12/2025 08:37

I once got a pj set size 10 from my now exH….was a size 18 at the time. Pissed me off

Grandfather gave me the bookmark. His name was on it.

Friend got me the dried flowers. She really bigged it up and said I was going to love it. That she had gone to so much trouble to get it for me. She said it was special and luxurious.

I have never shown any interest in dried flowers.

I assumed it was from ur dh in which case u would be justified being annoyed. But from ur grandfather, and ur friend? Ur being unreasonable tbh

Owly11 · 25/12/2025 08:46

I think it is fine - if from a partner, no, but grandad and friend? Don't worry about it.

Sorry to mention but many Poundland shops have been having closing down sales this month so it was probably reduced !

TheChosenTwo · 25/12/2025 08:53

The bookmark with his name on it is quite sweet, you’ll think of him every time you use it. I mean it’s not a wonderfully exciting present but it’s far from the worst I’ve heard. The Poundland dried flowers are a bit shit.

This is my favourite thread ever! Sorry OP pretty shit gifts, I've had plenty of shit gifts in the past, enough to be completely over the whole gifting nonsense.

Curiousrobin · 25/12/2025 09:42

I thought at first, yes that's a bit silly of them to do. But actually, it's really sweet from your grandfather. He probably doesn't realise that sort of thing would have your own name, but think it should have his, as it was from him. Doesn't sound like he meant it to be a shitty gift.
The friend also tried, and thought she'd got it right. The fact that she was bigging it up, she really did believe you'd like it! Although a bit confusing that she said she went to trouble to get it, when you say it has a poundland label..

singthing · 25/12/2025 09:45

Yes that is disappointing, but look past it or it'll annoy you for longer than it deserves to be in your brain. Take half an hour now to buy something that's been on a wishlist for ages - it'll probably be in the sale now too! In all the melee you will forget you did so, then in a few days, you'll give yourself a lovely surprise!

People can be rubbish, but it doesn't mean they don't love you. Happy Christmas 💐

Is it silver? He might think you’d value it as an heirloom.

If his name on it is meant as a 'this is from grandad' type of thing, then that's OK. If he's just getting rid of crap he doesn't want, then no, it's incredibly naff. However, I wouldn't dwell on it.

Howardyoudo · 25/12/2025 09:57

That’s awful op. More so from your friend. What did you get her?

Randomchat · 25/12/2025 09:58

Maybe he thought you were supposed to buy the thing with the name of the person giving the gift and not the person receiving the gift?

I agree the flowers are shit.

From dh this year I got cheap bath bombs shaped like gingerbread men and a thing shaped like a bird to stick in a plant pot to water your plants when you're on holiday. Total shit. Why did he think I would want a plant watering thing? I don't like plants or even really have any apart from a handful of spider plants that haven't died off yet.

Was the name on the bookmark someone in your family?

I agree some presents have been given with zero effort and thought, wish they didn’t bother. One example that still stands out was when I was working at a supermarket around 2009/10. A woman came through my till with about 55 tins of Roses. She said that’s all her Xmas presents shopping done in one shop.

LunaTheCat · 25/12/2025 10:15

That’s shit.. I am sorry OP
i often think of the woman given a periscope for Christmas .. the thread is a couple years old and am waiting for an update… did the marriage survive ? Id]f a man bought a periscope one year do you get a submarine the next ?

hattie43 · 25/12/2025 10:23

Horrible and very disappointing.

TheIceBear · 25/12/2025 10:53

I thought this was going to be another commoner garden moaning thread but in all honesty that really is shit zero marks for effort and nothing would be preferable. The charity shops will be brimming with all these crappy things in the coming weeks. The effort of bringing such things to the charity shop is a chore in itself.

Laserwho · 25/12/2025 10:54

My grandfather passed away many years ago. If he had given me a bookmark with his name engraved on it I would cherish it forever. But you do you 🙄

Can you return the bookmark saying you’re worried it was meant for someone else?

Edited

How was it sweet of him? He was given it as a retirement gift. His work colleagues had his name engraved on it for him. He told me this He is highly educated and qualified who retired in his 50s.

If the friend hadn't bigged it up, it would not have been so bad. But she led me to believe it was something really amazing that is hard to get hold of.

I really would have preferred nothing. Both will be donated to charity.
