To be furious at local church carol service

YogaGrinch · 24/12/2025 18:55

With our new "fundamentalist " vicar who included genesis 3 16

And other misogynistic patriarchal quotes and suggestions throughout the service -

Listening to the King's college Cambridge service tonight was a completely different service although there too there were some dated patriarchal views shared?

And basically using opportunity of a full church to preach hellfire and brimstone snd call us all hypocrites and sinners rather than preaching love kindness beauty

Never heard anything like it

Was absolutely 💔

Oh that's a shame.

We've got a new vicar, young chap, and he put on a jolly show, it was really lovely. Reminded me of my childhood.

PlazaAthenee · 24/12/2025 19:01

Yanbu. Our local church has gone weird, modern and culty
Last year they wheeled out two TV's a showed a video from a chap whose depression was cured by God. Apparently he also cured migraines and a back back. I was sitting there 🙄.
I'm never going back to church while they have those numpties in charge.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 24/12/2025 19:03

That’s a shame. Our Christmas Eve afternoon service is very much aimed at young families with children dressing up.

Igmum · 24/12/2025 19:04

Wow. Sorry to hear that Grinch. Can you/the wardens/the PCC have a wee word? It may not work but it’s worth a shot. I really wouldn’t like that

Vitriolinsanity · 24/12/2025 19:09

Bollocks to that. I went to a wonderful service at Rochester’s cathedral a couple of weeks ago. Proper traditional readings, carols, choristers and candles. Most marvellous.

scatterolight · 24/12/2025 19:15

I know this might blow your mind but some people go to Church for tradition. Tradition that is in short supply everywhere else. You could always just stay at home and watch the BBC.

Tradition by quoting verses of Bible that are misogynistic and evil and blame women? You like that"tradition"?

Most carol services wisely stop at 3 15

Which bit of this is traditional for Christmas?

16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”

We are well shot of traditions like that!! I wouldn’t go back.

NSA2103 · 24/12/2025 19:23

Can you move to a different church?

MeouwKing · 24/12/2025 19:25

The bible needs a rewrite to fit modern times.

I've been a Christian my whole life, I've never heard this "traditional" verse read out in Church! Yuck.

thistimelastweek · 24/12/2025 19:28

Strange to go full on Old Testament to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
I'd be looking for another church.

Redflagsabounded · 24/12/2025 19:31

Baffled by this as an atheist, to be honest. If you are a Christian, surely you believe the Bible is the Word of God? If you believe that, how can you pick and choose which bits you like? If you don't believe that, how are you a Christian?

Is this from the Old Testament?

I don’t go to church but have some Christian sympathies. You’d think that on Christmas Eve of all times, the vicar might have enough simple tact to quote the person whose birthday is being celebrated! Jesus always seemed the opposite of misogynistic to me, and had ideas which are still revolutionary and subversive today.

Nope. Don't believe the bible is the word of God. I believe its about God, inspired by God. But ultimately written by humans. And then translated a few times. I think a lot of it was written to explain things we didnt understand at the time. Eg Adam and Eve.

carconcerns · 24/12/2025 19:38

For anyone wondering what the actual original Hebrew language meant here I recommend marg Mowczko or the bare marriage podcast.

GentleSheep · 24/12/2025 19:39

I would say that doesn't sound like the best time for that verse! However it's not a verse about 'blaming women' - to interpret it that way is incorrect. Having just had a sermon on Gen 3:14-15 last week (yes a sermon on just 2 verses) there's far more to what happened in the garden of Eden than Eve being to blame. That verse shouldn't be taken on it's own without a far fuller interpretation, taking one verse alone shows the dangers of misinterpretation, something that happens with many Bible verses taken alone.

But yes it's an odd thing to have during a carol service.

YogaGrinch · 24/12/2025 19:27

Yes this!!!

I can’t tell if you’re joking but you can’t just change the bible to suit new societal norms.

the bible is a heap of mistranslated, misogynistic, homophobic, hypocritical shite. That said, it is what it is and you can’t change it.

SharpAzurePoster · 24/12/2025 19:46

I've just checked and the same 9 readings are included in the Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve every single year. The carols and anthems change but not the readings. Its tradition and lots of people like it that way.

wiffin · 24/12/2025 19:48

Yet another reason why I don't 'do' God.

I love a carol service. I just choose a service without the God bit. Lots of carols are old, beautiful and traditional.
