To be furious at local church carol service

YogaGrinch · 24/12/2025 18:55

With our new "fundamentalist " vicar who included genesis 3 16

And other misogynistic patriarchal quotes and suggestions throughout the service -

Listening to the King's college Cambridge service tonight was a completely different service although there too there were some dated patriarchal views shared?

And basically using opportunity of a full church to preach hellfire and brimstone snd call us all hypocrites and sinners rather than preaching love kindness beauty

Never heard anything like it

Was absolutely 💔

That‘s a really odd passage to bring up especially at Christmas. Maybe he was in a grump.

No offence but it isn't actually. My guess is the vicar followed a traditional 'Nine Lessons & Carols' format, which uses selected Bible readings to tell the whole story of God's relationship with us leading up to the birth of Jesus. Its basically a 'prologue'. The Christmas story makes no sense without it. The passage from Genesis is the first reading IIRC. Thousands of C of E churches will hold 'Nine Lessons & Carols' services around now.

I haven't been to church for years, the last time this guy (preacher) was saying if you're not with us your against us, which sounded totally unacceptable to me as a Christian principle. When I asked my very Christian friend what she thought she agreed with him. Put me off completely.

What was the context? Jesus said to follow him was 'a narrow gate and few shall enter'. He was talking about what it takes to be a true follower and how much we have to sacrifice to do it. Maybe the preacher meant that? That you can't be half in and half out.

Hotel

I didn’t say the Old Testament was evil or that the God of the New Testament is different Confused

Just that there’s a new covenant in Jesus’s blood, which I think is fairly mainstream thinking.

Im not a biblical scholar

Strange to go full on Old Testament to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
I'd be looking for another church.

traditionally the first reading in a nine lessons and carols service is Genesis 3. That’s pretty much every cathedral everywhere, not some weird fundamentalist stuff.

Tradition by quoting verses of Bible that are misogynistic and evil and blame women? You like that"tradition"?

What were the other misogynistic patriarchal quotes and suggestions quoted at the service?

Did the vicar also mention how men would have to toil in the fields and endure physical hardships all their days?

No, we don’t follow all the laws in the OT. But neither do we (in mainstream denominations) tell women to shut up in church as St Paul does in 1 Corinthians; ban divorce except in case of adultery as Jesus teaches in the Gospels, or put out our eye if it causes us to sin (ditto). The Bible is a complex set of texts of different genres not a simple instruction manual, and we read it as an inspired set of writings in which different people over centuries wrestled with understanding God’s love for and relationship with humanity. It’s not the case that Christians follow the NT to the letter and ignore the OT; all have to be read prayerfully and with discernment.

Very well explained

I wasn't there.

I went to a christingle at the local Methodist church where the female vicar (is it a vicar at Methodist? Correct me if wrong) played out the nativity with balloons, and did a quiz with quality st chocolate.

They made it very clear that the collection taken was for a local charity that supports families struggling in the area.

The church was packed, she was channelling her inner Vicar of Dibley.

I’m really not religious but may go back in the new year :)

Sorry, I was kind of piggybacking on your question. Been trying to get my toddler to sleep and not focusing very well!

Milando · 24/12/2025 21:23

Maybe try your local Methodist church next time - most of them are very socially progressive these days.

I mean, given the way the thing’s set up, from Genesis onwards, right through the gospels, Acts and Paul’s letters, it’s quite difficult to see how you could excise the patriarchy from Christianity without deconstructing the entire edifice and starting again.

You’d need a much more original sin, for a start.

Hedjwitch · 24/12/2025 21:26

If you are going to follow any of the Abrahamic religions,then you can't be surprised to hear misogyny being preached

Crinkle77 · 24/12/2025 21:28

felixnavidad · 24/12/2025 20:56

I think YABU to be surprised. All organised religion is founded on pretty hateful ideologies. Most surrounding women being subservient and “dirty” at times.

Yep this. Shock horror the church is a misogynistic and patriarchal institution 🙄 Oh and while we're at it homophobic.

giddyboo · 24/12/2025 21:29

Redflagsabounded · 24/12/2025 19:31

Baffled by this as an atheist, to be honest. If you are a Christian, surely you believe the Bible is the Word of God? If you believe that, how can you pick and choose which bits you like? If you don't believe that, how are you a Christian?

Agree with this. Christians are meant to change to conform to God's standards. God is not meant to conform to what humans disagree with.

Changingplace · 24/12/2025 21:30

To add, if you go to church you can’t really complain about them quoting the Bible at you, it might not be the bit you agree with but such is religion, no?

Saz12 · 24/12/2025 21:30

Darkdiamond · 24/12/2025 20:53

I haven't read the full thread but Genesis gets straight into how man rebelled against God and this led to permanent separation from God.

Genesis 3
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspringa] and hers;
he will crushb] your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

So after The Fall, things seemed miserable and hopeless for mankind, but God is already thinking about to rectify the situation through Jesus dying for mankind (he will crush your head and you will strike his heel). Mankind was utterly doomed by the events in the Garden of Eden except for the plan to offer Jesus as a sacrifice to make things right. This is literally the Gospel. That's why everyone is so happy that Jesus was born, that's why he is the 'light of the world' and all of the hymns sign about how we were sinners and he saved us. The Old Testment lies out the full breadth of man' recurring rebellion from God and Jesus is the final and ultimate solution to this problem. Believe it or not but that's the theology that Christianity is based on. Yes, of course Jesus taught us how to be kind and selfless etc, and showed us how to extend grace and forgive but really the joy Christians feel at Christmas is because Jesus literally saved the world, spiritually. Ok the sermon isn't very fuzzy and doesn't have the feels of the 'no room at the inn' story but it's not totally irrelevant either.

Bugger me, for an omniscient being He lacked foresight, surely?

OmNomShiva · 24/12/2025 21:32

The bible is an instrument of patriarchy, and religion is the enforcement of patriarchy. Not surprising that they read something dodgy out, the whole story was invented to enable men to assume and retain power.

Which bit of this is traditional for Christmas?

16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”

Is that what he preached?

Fucking hell I’d be writing a letter of complaint for sure. That is just a sexist twat using his position to spout his gross misogynistic views.

Soonenough · 24/12/2025 21:37

Sort of in the same theme I have a really hard time listening to the Old Testament constantly referencing how special Israel is , how they are the chosen, better than all others . But it is of its time . Modern Jews of course don't agree with the idea of Jesus fulfilling these prophecies. It is very difficult to be a Biblical follower as it is absolutely misogynistic, homophobic which is the focus of many fundamentalists excuses for their behaviour.

felixnavidad · 24/12/2025 21:38

YogaGrinch · 24/12/2025 21:35

If this is genuinely the first time you’ve noticed it I’d suggest you’ve not been paying that close attention to your religion.

I’ve experienced similar as well as homophobic hate speech so I stopped going. I’m sad because I do believe there’s a god / reason behind life that’s more spiritual but the out-dated misogyny and general lack of respect/obsession with sex has shown me that the church institution isn’t for me. I liked the sense of community but, with a lesbian daughter, it became clear it wasn’t my community anymore.

Have you tried going to other churches?

Not every church is like that. I promise plenty will welcome your lesbian daughter as she is and not think she needs "healing" or whatever bs
