Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

My neighbour smokes weed, it smells fucking vile when I go in the garden, and in summer it would come in through my back bedroom window while I was laid in bed (currently using that bedroom as master is out of use for now). Utterly repulsive.

Same! Smokes it and I think sells it, from the line of teenagers constantly coming and going from his house. I particularly hate it when I am hanging out washing in the warmer months and then that disgusting smell comes wafting over the fence, ready to soak into your clothes. Urgh.

Bluejaysforthewin · 24/12/2025 21:11

I will be having a sativa gummie mid morning and glide happily through the day slightly stoned 😊

This is not (or should not) be true. 'Anyone' should not be able to get a prescription for anything, medicines should be prescribed purely on the basis of evidence base and need. Not profit.

@Dliplop Of course some houses have alcoholics or binge drinkers or people getting high, but a little puff of my vape (bathroom, open window and fan) isn’t getting me high.

But what's the point..? Drinking a glass of wine at the table with dinner gives me a totally different image to someone standing in the bathroom alone vaping out a window. It's anti-social.

For me tomorrow the point will be day 2 of my period and need to control the cramps and keep going.

Otherwise it lends a nice fuzzy relaxing feeling. Like 1/4 glass of wine. I’m a cheap drunk so if I sip a whole glass of wine I’m on the floor giggling. What’s the point of having alcohol?

PollyBell · 24/12/2025 21:14

You mean weed smokers who can barely string two coherent words together, yes it does affect brains same as alcohol

Thepeopleversuswork · 24/12/2025 21:30

Both are OK in moderation and used sensibly but massively problematic in excess.

But the reality is one is legal and ubiquitous and the other is illegal and fuelled by crime.

I don’t necessarily think this is fair or reasonable but we are not going to get Great Auntie Betty on the spliff at Christmas.

The act of sharing a bottle with company. As I said earlier alcohol has a historical link with celebration. The taste. Of the wine itself, but it also enhances the flavour of meats and cheeses. Far more sophisticated to chat over a nice red than to suck on a bit of plastic in the loo. I won't be drinking to get drunk, or even tipsy, tomorrow. I'll have a couple as part of the meal and experience.

ChristmasElvie · 24/12/2025 22:22

Teenagers aren’t going missing at Christmas and stabbing each other on the next estate over regarding supply of a nice bottle of local gin to be fair. So there’s always that.

Dliplop · 24/12/2025 22:22

@owlpassport it’s so funny how different things affect people different ways! Alcohol muddies flavours for me, weed enhances them. Lucky we can each do what works for us.

MeouwKing · 24/12/2025 22:23

Slightly off-topic, but why does my low E string on my little SQUIER get out of tune so quickly. I had it restrung by my local music shop. The other strings are fine, just the low E.

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 24/12/2025 22:31

YABVU

A lot of the parents at the kids primary school are openly weed smokers, some even smoke it by the gates. The stench is fucking awful and the effect its had on their brains is bloody obvious too

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 24/12/2025 22:33

But i still think it should be made legal so that if people do want to smoke it they get it pure, dont have to go to dodgy dealers or get involved in nasty situations

If that were the case in this country then YANBU

MeouwKing · 24/12/2025 22:37

I think weed should be available on private prescription for any adult that wants it. That would hit the dealers.

Joeninety · 24/12/2025 14:55

I'd agree, but it's not so simple. Once you're hooked, you're really hooked.

Don’t start in the first place then

Tell that to their teen selves back when they started Hmm

Blueuggboots · 24/12/2025 22:40

Please, for the love of all things holy, don’t ever let weed become more socially acceptable than it is and preferably less so!!

it stinks, it causes serious mental health issues, stops people making memories and turns people into wasters.
alcohol is a bastard too.

How many women are going to get absused tomorrow by their significant other due to alcohol? I’ve witnessed the destruction from alcohol, it’s disgusting and it robs people. How many mums will switch after having a drink and turn foul? How many alcohol fuelled fights? How many in casualty from alcohol related incidents? How many seeing their last Christmas due to cirrhosis?
and one drink makes you stink.

So you want to ban alcohol? Bring back prohibition?

25flyby · 24/12/2025 22:45

The northern hemisphere has used alcohol for thousands of years.
Turning grain into something fun got cold humans through.
Cannabis is a warm weather plant. Smoking is a different to drinking.

HostaCentral · 24/12/2025 22:49

Weed is not harmless to the consumer nor society as a whole. It is a psychotic drug. Your purchase has no tax on it. You are supporting criminals to exploit others. To use the ill gotton gains for further criminality and harder drugs, and supporting gang warfare, purchasing weapons. Where exactly do you think your money is going?

So make it available legally .

Superhansrantowindsor · 24/12/2025 22:54

Weed absolutely stinks to the high heavens. Its illegality means it is connected to county lines. If you buy weed you are complicit in the grooming of children by criminal gangs.

It can be vaped, which smells less or eaten.

BrokenWorldRecord · 24/12/2025 23:05

Depends on where you live. Where I live weed and slcohol are both equally legal and readily available. So they hold the same “status” in terms of social acceptance.

Blogswife · 24/12/2025 23:09

Neither to excess is acceptable, however weed absolutely stinks and is really anti social . I doubt any none drug - taker would accept it their house
