Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

IsThisIt39 · 24/12/2025 13:22

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

I agree OP but judging by the ‘what’s in your fridge’ Christmas threads, we will be strongly outnumbered. I don’t drink at all, i hate the issues alcohol causes and how it changes people. I do however have the occasional smoke (probably not Xmas day though).

Yes. It’s interesting to see how the other side live. And to be damn grateful I don’t know anyone like this. Ho ho ho, it’s nearly 4:20 😊

merry spliffmas to you all ✌️

Weed is catastrophic for mental health long term

So is alcohol….but that’s legal so…

Chiaseedling · 24/12/2025 15:58

@EarlofShrewsbury- my neighbour allegedly uses weed fir medical reasons. It didn’t smell any less rank. Thankfully he seems to have stopped recently but I was smelling in in our house through the windows. Not acceptable.

Bloozie · 24/12/2025 15:59

Hate the smell of weed and vaping it still stinks.

But cannabis cookies are ace. Every few months I’ll have an edible. I really struggle to relax and switch my mind off. Weed works. I’m not really bothered if it makes me boring, I don’t do it to be social.

And yes, it’s mad that alcohol is legal and weed isn’t. Legalising it would remove many concerns people have about crime.

The thing I hate most about weed - crime and exploitation aside - is weed culture. It’s lame as fuck. Seth Rogen… embarrassing.

I had some cider the other night, (poured into a glass, I hate drinking out of a can or bottle.) And it had zero effect on me. If DS had needed me or in the case of an emergency I'd have been just fine to handle it.

I don't make excuses for drunk drivers. The cunt who was completely wasted, speeding and on the phone who crashed into a car and killed a baby and his aunt, is the kind of person I'd like to see locked up for life. (I don't drive.)

SapphireSeptember · 24/12/2025 16:07

Nor should you drive when you've been doing drugs. I hope no one's been excusing that.

IsThisIt39 · 24/12/2025 16:08

LlynTegid · 24/12/2025 14:40

I do not think anyone was murdered and no one forced into gangs for the drinks trade. Unlike the drugs trade.

How many women are going to get absused tomorrow by their significant other due to alcohol? I’ve witnessed the destruction from alcohol, it’s disgusting and it robs people. How many mums will switch after having a drink and turn foul? How many alcohol fuelled fights? How many in casualty from alcohol related incidents? How many seeing their last Christmas due to cirrhosis?
and one drink makes you stink.

Weed stinks and can affect some people’s mental health. My ex’s ex he had a daughter with had no mental health issues before. She started on the pot she was seeing a dealer who smoked it to fund his habit. She had psychotic episodes was in and out of the local mental health hospital. SD was constantly palmed off with anyone then end up staying with us for months. that would have her. She was paranoid would go and pick fights with people who had wronged her years before. She was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Whosthetabbynow · 24/12/2025 16:11

Who wants the stink of weed blown all over their turkey dinner?

YesSirICanNameChange · 24/12/2025 16:13

EarlofShrewsbury · 24/12/2025 15:06

Circa 70,000 people are prescribed cannabis in the UK.

It's been legal for medical use since 2018.

A lot of people wrongly think this only means an extract or spray. Actual cannabis flower is prescribed, along with other forms such as value cartridges and pastilles.

It's still illegal to smoke it but a dry herb vape is fine. The smell isn't always coming from someone using it illegally.

Educate yourselves.

Oh and lots of things stink. Incontinent people, people adverse to showering, stinky breath, babies arses, farmers fields, perfume, etc

Just because lots of things stink doesn't mean we have to be ok with an extra thing. There's something specific about weed - you don't have to be close to it to be affected like someone who hasn't showered / brushed their teeth, and you can't close a window to get away from it like a farmers field. It covers everything in sweaty arsecrack garlic smell in such a wide radius.

Yeah, the annoying weed culture "merry spliffmas 4:20 blaze it" is even more cringe and annoying than the smell. The smell is a useful excuse to avoid spending time with people whose most interesting personality trait is that they smoke weed.

🤣🤣🤣 And a merry Christmas to you too!

I thought weed was supposed to make people chill out?

The13thFairy · 24/12/2025 16:28

When I socialised with people who smoked weed I used to get a contact high, which I found distressing. Second hand smoke from weed is potent to bystanders. And I utterly stank. I don't do it any more.

BobblyBobbleHat · 24/12/2025 16:35

I'm quite happy with neither, but the stench of weed really makes me feel ill.

The13thFairy · 24/12/2025 16:36

IsThisIt39 · 24/12/2025 13:37

I hope your edibles are lovely. It takes a while for the effects to hit when eating so go steady. Trouble with edibles is they give you the munchies and then you eat more and then is goodnight for a damn fine sleep.

I haven’t smoked in over a decade, and have serious air filters in every room so the vape doesn’t linger. It’s a much nicer smell than dogs, and I have one of those too.

Another trouble with edibles is that you don't actually know when they'll hit. The second time I used them it was almost 24 hrs before I felt the effects ~ don't know how it happened but it was awful. I wasn't in the safe space I'd arranged to be in.

landlordhell · 24/12/2025 16:37

Weed is illegal and stinks.

Midgetgemsplease · 24/12/2025 16:40

One is illegal, may or may not lead to mh difficulties and smells completely rank, and imo is for losers (as is alcohol to excess tbh) and the other isn't.

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 24/12/2025 16:40

Both are awful and shouldn’t be socially acceptable around children! Drunk people can be aggressive and embarrassing and weed stinks and causes mental illness!

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 24/12/2025 16:42

I so agree op.
Weed destroys less brain cells than alcohol. More people are killed via related alcohol drinkers than weed takers.
I vape weed in a dry herb vape.. not the vapes everyone can buy cheap. But one where it stops the weed from smelling.. it's the best thing for my chronic pain.. l don't even get " high".. just pain free n relaxed.
Alcohol has taken so many people from my life.

LarkspurLane · 24/12/2025 16:44

MO0N · 24/12/2025 14:47

Cannabis is legal, anyone can get a private prescription for medical cannabis, medical cannabis gets you high just like ordinary cannabis does.
As already pointed out one can use edible cannabis and there is no smell for people to complain about.

I'm not against it being available on prescription. But that to me is a totally different thing to making it socially acceptable.

But when you say anyone can get it, what would I have to do/say to be prescribed it?

setadriftonmemorybliss · 24/12/2025 16:48

I can’t bare the smell of weed. It stinks…

themerchentofvenus · 24/12/2025 16:49

There is nothing worse than sitting in a room and having to have a conversation with anyone that's had a spliff. OMG they are so boring.

At least after a glass of alcohol people are still relatively themselves.

Plus smoking stinks. It's really vile.

My SIL is a long term weed smoker and the paranoia is ridiculous.

Redwinedaze · 24/12/2025 17:49

There are legal consequences around alcohol such as driving, being in charge of young children.

All day drinking is an extreme example and cannot be absorbed by a bystander.

The criminal gangs behind the weed and vulnerable people it exploits are another factor.

Both have a negative impact on the body and mind in larger quantities and smaller quantities on mental health, plus the content of weed varies and can be highly toxic, it also smells horrendous.

BauhausOfEliott · 24/12/2025 17:49

If you want to smoke weed at Christmas, you can do that in your own home just like I can have a drink in mine. It doesn’t matter if it’s ‘socially acceptable’ unless you’re doing it in public.

Your comparison is pretty meaningless anyway because you’ve only mentioned the (potential) health benefits of cannabis and none of the many risks associated with it, and in any case the health benefits you mention would likely be cancelled out by negative effects of inhaling smoke into your lungs all the time.

Plus, medical cannabis is only really linked with treating specific conditions - that doesn’t mean it’s beneficial for general health at all, in the same way that paracetamol is beneficial for someone with a fever but has no benefit for a healthy person who has no pain or fever to treat.

You’re also missing out the fact that alcohol is clearly labelled and regulated and its effects are therefore easily predicted, which is not the case with weed.

Alcohol can be bad for you. Weed can also be bad for you. Consuming either in your own home is entirely your choice and nobody’s likely to stop you.
