Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

IsThisIt39 · 24/12/2025 13:22

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

Nothing is going to persuade me that smoking weed around kids on Christmas Day is acceptable. Sorry.

Or any day come to that.

Dozer · 24/12/2025 14:52

@Sunshineofyourlove (weed) ’will have no adverse effect on anyone’

Not the case, unless it’s legal where you live or you grew it yourself from seeds or a plant bought from somewhere it’s legal. Financing crime has adverse effects on lots of people.

Joeninety · 24/12/2025 14:52

Weed is the first step to a living, or even dead dependency hell. Alcohol is just alcohol, all that's needed is a bit of common sense when enjoying it.

Mymanyellow · 24/12/2025 14:52

How about don’t smoke cigarettes, don’t take drugs and do t drink to excess. Show some restraint ffs.

Are you OK hun? What message are you giving to your kids?? Stop trying to downgrade 'weed' - its not OK

I'd agree, but it's not so simple. Once you're hooked, you're really hooked.

THisbackwithavengeance · 24/12/2025 14:55

Do you want permission to smoke weed OP? So you can pat yourself on the back as it’s not alcohol.

At least you can enjoy your Christmas with your DCs unlike the Vietnamese kids working in grow houses so you can get your fix. But they don’t matter of course.

Isthismykarma · 24/12/2025 14:57

I buy real CA standard edibles, so no ethical issues.
No smell.
Makes food taste nicer. Helps me to doze off. Makes films extra funny.
I don’t see how that’s worse than someone having a bottle of wine tbh.

Heyhelga · 24/12/2025 14:57

Weed is very much linked to mental health problems

Gosh! There's a big difference between a Dry Martini or a jug of Margaritas to someone coughing and spitting on a smelly old spliff...

Too many cases of machete wielding habitual weed smoking paranoid schizophrenics for my liking... although you could do an Alice B Toklas and create a cannabis infused Christmas pudding... That could be fun!

iloveeverykindofcat · 24/12/2025 15:01

Weed probably should be legal, but it isn't, so buying it funds organised crime and child exploitation.

And where is it socially acceptable to start drinking in the morning on Christmas? Not in my house, or any of my relatives or friends. Maybe a couple of my friends parents. It's hardly universal. Most of us will have wine with the dinner tomorrow, I won't but I'll have a whisky and coke after. I'd think that was more typical Christmas social norm?

Cannabis is legal, anyone can get a private prescription for medical cannabis, medical cannabis gets you high just like ordinary cannabis does.
As already pointed out one can use edible cannabis and there is no smell for people to complain about.

This is not (or should not) be true. 'Anyone' should not be able to get a prescription for anything, medicines should be prescribed purely on the basis of evidence base and need. Not profit.

@Dliplop Of course some houses have alcoholics or binge drinkers or people getting high, but a little puff of my vape (bathroom, open window and fan) isn’t getting me high.

But what's the point..? Drinking a glass of wine at the table with dinner gives me a totally different image to someone standing in the bathroom alone vaping out a window. It's anti-social.

Createausername1970 · 24/12/2025 15:04

I think if alcohol was discovered today, it would probably be more controlled. But it's been with us in one form or another for thousands of years so falls into an odd category where we do know it's a harmful product but we still happily consume it or give it as presents.

EarlofShrewsbury · 24/12/2025 15:06

Circa 70,000 people are prescribed cannabis in the UK.

It's been legal for medical use since 2018.

A lot of people wrongly think this only means an extract or spray. Actual cannabis flower is prescribed, along with other forms such as value cartridges and pastilles.

It's still illegal to smoke it but a dry herb vape is fine. The smell isn't always coming from someone using it illegally.

Educate yourselves.

Oh and lots of things stink. Incontinent people, people adverse to showering, stinky breath, babies arses, farmers fields, perfume, etc

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 24/12/2025 15:10

It is not socially acceptable to get steaming drunk or stoned around kids.

But whether someone agrees with it or not, smoking weed makes you an illegal drug user. That isn’t morally neutral. It involves condoning an illegal trade built on violence, exploitation, and the suffering of men, women, and children.

The suffering and destroyed lives tied to that trade don’t disappear because someone thinks the drug should be socially acceptable, or legal, or thinks their supply is victim-free (it still condones/encourages the wider use of illegal drugs).

There will be children suffering this Christmas due to this illegal drug trade.

Hope you reflect on that while getting your high this Christmas (although I doubt it, drug users tend to be both deluded and too self absorbed in my experience).

Weed is catastrophic for mental health long term

This!!

my nephew had weed psychosis last year. He’s still in a terrible state.

Millytante · 24/12/2025 15:20

mumofoneAloneandwell · 24/12/2025 13:34

I think that its the smell 😄

Its awful and discriminatory that the smell is associated with classlessness tbh

Someone doing a line or a brownie would be more acceptable, maybe bake brownies (😉) instead??

Mother of God. Classlessness? Scofflaw maybe, if you want to assign a category.
But championing cocaine is the mark of a very poor general analysis. Not only is it the drug I personally abhor above all others, which means nowt, but it’s the product and objective of humanity's most loathsome instincts and imperatives.
Its global trafficking network has made a Hell on Earth for millions of enslaved workers, when it isn’t carrying out turf war massacres and political assassinations.
Closer to home, it makes young men dream of being a cunt like well-known rapist and thug Conor McGregor. 🤬

Moonlightfrog · 24/12/2025 15:22

I agree OP but judging by the ‘what’s in your fridge’ Christmas threads, we will be strongly outnumbered. I don’t drink at all, i hate the issues alcohol causes and how it changes people. I do however have the occasional smoke (probably not Xmas day though).

PurpleSky300 · 24/12/2025 15:25

I think excessive drinking at Christmas has just become a cliche. It's something people say or suggest to seem 'in the spirit' - oh I'll have a Baileys with breakfast, oh it's wine o'clock, I'll have a tipple with this or that. Are they really drinking that much though? In my experience, most people drink largely the same on Christmas Day as they would on any other special occasion. Somebody who uses it as an excuse to drink morning, noon and night just has a problem and is probably like that all year around, it's just not 'acceptable' then.

Winterburn · 24/12/2025 15:35

My neighbour smokes weed, it smells fucking vile when I go in the garden, and in summer it would come in through my back bedroom window while I was laid in bed (currently using that bedroom as master is out of use for now). Utterly repulsive.

Rocknrollstar · 24/12/2025 15:50

Sunshineofyourlove · 24/12/2025 13:33

I don't drink and dislike the effect alcohol has on other people. I also hate smoking of any kind. But, starting this afternoon, I will enhance my Christmas with some light, homemade cannabis edibles, which will have no adverse effect on anyone.

But what about the effect on the drug/ Gun trade that cannabis is linked to.

There is limited evidence of any benefit, which is why 99% of those prescriptions are private and not NHS. Heroin is legal for medical use. Doesn't mean I want my brother-in-law shooting up over the turkey.

Where do you think OP is getting their drugs? It'll be a long supply chain with criminality, violence and many deaths at its core. Often those deaths are innocent bystanders including children in the UK.

All so OP and other similar types can have a bit of weed etc? Zero moral compass some people.

Chiaseedling · 24/12/2025 15:57

Weed is rank and fucking stinks whether you have one toke or the whole joint. Same as a cigarette imho.
Having a couple of drinks to be sociable - great. Getting plastered and violent - not good.

For full disclosure I used to smoke some weed in the 90s but it’s a different beast now. And I also don’t drink for health reasons, although I would if I could (was getting a more rare occurrence in meno times anyway.).
