Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

IsThisIt39 · 24/12/2025 13:22

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

I see no harm in having a few drinks over Christmas, but weed smells absolutely horrible. If you drink responsibly then a few drinks is absolutely fine. I'm driving tomorrow, so won't be drinking until after I get home, and even then I might not bother. I'm having a small one tonight though, to toast my dad as this is the first Christmas since he passed away in June.

Lighten up OP - don’t be a fun sponge

Where are you getting your weed from?
Drug dealers exploiting children through county lines or grown in uk 'cannabis factories' using people trafficked into the uk through debt bondage, hardly harmless as going to the supermarket is it?

Exactly this. I can be fairly sure no one has been trafficked or exploited for me to enjoy my glass of wine.

BillieWiper · 24/12/2025 14:14

Some people smoke weed, some don't. Most people don't want smoking in their house so if you do smoke anything you should go outside as a guest. But in your own home just smoke away!

I don't think weed is more damaging than alcohol or tobacco. To the majority of users. It's a shame done people use it despite the fact it exacerbates their MH issues rather than helps them.

It can be very helpful to some people. And also just fun to do on a special occasion like Xmas where you're going to be eating lots of food!

anonononon · 24/12/2025 14:14

The mental health spiral my brother went into from weed killed him. I will go ballistic at my kids if I find them dabbling in it unless prescribed at known dosages.

I'm sure there will be other families out there who have similar horrific stories about alcohol destroying lives.

BUT, at the end of the day one is legal and the other isn't.

WheresBillGrundyNow · 24/12/2025 14:14

It is socially acceptable in my world. My mum has been high/ stoned every Christmas I can remember, in the evening once she’d cooked the dinner. I grew up with it. I stopped a couple of years after I left home.
I think being stoned/ high is usually really antisocial, especially for the people that don’t do it. Conversation goes to absolute crap - either people are mainly silent or spouting nonsense about vapour trails and how COVID was a hoax or they are laughing their heads off hysterical at a rerun of the vicar of dibley for no reason. Everyone sits around with red eyes in their own world. It’s really depressing.
Alcohol though obviously has its own drawbacks is better for socialising in moderation.
Weed etc don’t really have a “moderation” as such. It doesn’t make people more gregarious, it makes them withdrawn so even a little can turn a normally very interesting person into a total bore.

I don't drink and dislike the effect alcohol has on other people. I also hate smoking of any kind. But, starting this afternoon, I will enhance my Christmas with some light, homemade cannabis edibles, which will have no adverse effect on anyone.

I don't use drugs and dislike the effect cannabis has on other people. You might think it doesn't have an effect, just 'relaxes you' or whatever, but I can assure you I find people far more boring after it. Ditto find people boring when they drink too much, but a few glasses of wine with dinner is different. It is a social activity and has a long history as a celebratory activity, so is it surprising it's perceived differently?

JHound · 24/12/2025 14:18

In part of my family both are socially acceptable. My cousin’s Christmas gatherings have as much weed being smoked as alcohol being drunk….

StupidHappyClocks · 24/12/2025 14:18

Nothing is going to persuade me that smoking weed around kids on Christmas Day is acceptable. Sorry.

DrBlackbird · 24/12/2025 14:19

coconutchocolatecream · 24/12/2025 13:37

Neither is okay in my book. A small drink around kids, fine, but no-one should be overindulging in front of kids. Smoking anything around children is also bad, and I wouldn't want to encourage children to think weed is a good idea, because for so many people it really, really isn't.

If children are present, 100% agree. Years ago, I was involved in a development project one Christmas in South America. Had been there for months so no longer a novel presence. Thus it was a surprise to find most of the village children at our hut on Christmas Day. It sunk in that we were likely the only sober adults around and the kids just instinctively moved to a place that felt safer. Kids know when adults are not fully present or wholly able to keep them (feeling) safe.

SmileyMoonset · 24/12/2025 14:25

No one in my house will be drinking in the morning.

Most of the adults (excepting drivers) will have a glass of wine or a beer with their meal but no one’s personality will change, nor will they be poisoned, fighting or having memory loss. No will get close to drunk or be remotely hung over on Boxing day.

Weed is illegal. It smells dreadful. It impacts long term mental health.

I wouldn’t let anyone who smelled of weed over the doorstep.

Dollymylove · 24/12/2025 14:27

A lot of people are of the mindset that smoking weed is harmless. It isn't. It produces similar effects tp alcohol if you smoke enough of it.
Why do you think roadside tests include it when stopped by the police?

Diamondsbutnoknickers · 24/12/2025 14:28

Where I live most anti social behaviour is drug based, including weed/skunk.

Plus if someone is drunk it's quite obvious and you can avoid them. Drugs make people unpredictable and it isnt always obvious they are under the influence until they kick off.

I despise the current weed/CBD solves everything snake oil sales pitches. The advert with Claudia W taking CBD particularly annoys me because it says nothing. They cant make claims because it hasnt been proved and yet they sell it on the basis that whatever your ill, you'll be grand with a couple of drops or by microdosing.

BTW I don't drink.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 24/12/2025 14:31

If you really need other people to explain the difference, maybe time to cut down on the weed eh?

Yourlifeinyourhands · 24/12/2025 14:33

I don’t see the issue with it!

YesSirICanNameChange · 24/12/2025 14:36

Weed stinks, and anyone who says "oh it depends on the strain / barely anyone can smell it / I use deodorant" is delusional; you stink.

Do edibles if you must, but people who use weed are so unbelievably boring - even more boring than drinkers, because the pot users think they're better than the drinkers and want everyone to know how superior and chilled out they are, and how cool and young and hip they are (bonus boring points if they vape it).

For a drug that's supposed to chill people out, I've never met a less chill group of people in my life.

Dliplop · 24/12/2025 14:39

I’m in Canada and generally people here would find it appalling the way alcohol is consumed through the Christmas period in the UK. BUT would have zero issue with someone having a glass of wine or low dose edible wrapping gifts or after dinner. Of course some houses have alcoholics or binge drinkers or people getting high, but a little puff of my vape (bathroom, open window and fan) isn’t getting me high.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/12/2025 14:39

MissMay95 · 24/12/2025 13:30

Alcohol is legal but shouldn't be. How many deaths per year are alcohol related? I know 2 people killed by drunk drivers also. It's vile. People who condone it and make excuses for it, tell me everything I need to know about that person 🤷‍♀️

I don't think anyone in their right mind would condone drunk driving. It's so morally wrong there are no words. I don't agree re alcohol in general though, I find it quite beneficial to my life truth be told. In moderation it's fine the problem is misuse. Same with fast food or any indulgence really. Think of all the people who are killed from speeding, significantly more than drunk drivers and we still permit people to do this, often eye rolling at people who claim to speed instead of ostracised them. It's a double standard.

LlynTegid · 24/12/2025 14:40

I do not think anyone was murdered and no one forced into gangs for the drinks trade. Unlike the drugs trade.

BunnyLake · 24/12/2025 14:42

Weed stinks. I smoked the odd one year’s ago but today’s weed is so strong you can smell it a mile away and it’s stomach churning.

I don’t think anyone should ever be high or drunk around children any day of the year!

Funnywonder · 24/12/2025 14:46

Oh God, the smell of weed is awful. I have never smoked it, or anything else for that matter. I wouldn’t even want anyone to smoke it outside because the smell sticks like shit to everything and people just bring it in on their clothes. So, for that reason alone, I’d rather everyone stuck to a thimble of sherry and a sniff of the Christmas cake (while I quaff all the wine and Bailey’s🤣)

MO0N · 24/12/2025 14:47

DinoLil · 24/12/2025 13:48

One substance is illegal. One isn't.

Cannabis is legal, anyone can get a private prescription for medical cannabis, medical cannabis gets you high just like ordinary cannabis does.
As already pointed out one can use edible cannabis and there is no smell for people to complain about.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 24/12/2025 14:47

We’ve never made a big deal of alcohol. It’s there if we want a glass with a meal but don’t often. Much like chocolate we’ve never treated it as a treat.

In terms of smoking, vaping and weed if you’re smoking it really should be outside if you have family around because of health reasons. If it’s your house and you all smoke do what you like

Personally I don’t think meat should be a celebrated element of a meal or day either partly because most of it is very bad for people aswell.

Regarding lingering smells in the house
meat, weed, smoking all stink the house out
alcohol doesn’t

beeautifullif3 · 24/12/2025 14:50

The amount of people so uneducated about cannabis is actually hilarious 😂
