Socially acceptable Christmas alcohol but weed is not ok?

Just that I find it mad that alcohol is socially acceptable especially at Christmas, around kids, morning or middle of the day, all day, all normal. Despite it being a poison, a personality changer, a catalyst for fights, memory loss etc. There’s never been a study to support its use medicinally, with the exception of red wine in moderation.

But it’s not socially acceptable to get a little high on weed? Which does have many studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating a whole host of problems.

It’s mad IMO.

We can sit down to Christmas dinner and share a bottle of fizzy wine round he table and it has no side effects that affects anyone else present (eg children). You can't really say the same passing a dutchie round the dinner table.

And I think that's a fairly major point - it's possible to have one or two alcoholic drinks and stay on the ball. Partaking in cannabis usually involves getting pretty spaced out, which is rather anti social. I wouldn't look at someone drinking to excess at a family event any better either.

I guess the biggest factor is whether you are in the company of children or non smokers. If it's just a bunch of stoners together on Christmas day then crack on.

I work with a lot of people who use weed and I used to believe in legalisation, now I'm really not so sure. Quite a number of them use nothing else yet have still had very significant mental breaks, have become increasingly addicted, have ended up in significant debt, have ended up in trouble with the criminal underbelly that provides it, for many they're unable to access appropriate healthcare as a result of their use and for others I can see the direct correlation between their weed use and increased anxiety after using even though they feel its the opposite.

Some of course manage it fine and use a little socially - for me I still can't condone it because where I am, they're ultimately funding gangs that exploit vulnerable children to get it. It has tentacles so there's no point in pretending like it doesn't. So unless it's specifically prescribed by a gp for something like severe epilepsy, it's going to be a no from me.

Alcohol is legal for a start which removes a lot of those tentacles. I agree it's often misused and can cause harm and should never be misused around children or as an excuse to harm others same as having a chopping knife in your kitchen.

You talk about how many mums turn into monsters when drunk, but I've seen plenty of parents unfortunately just not give a shit because they were too stoned or because weed really affected their motivation levels. To the point of failing to safeguard children and losing them. Both can be equally harmful.

If you want to smoke weed at Christmas, you can do that in your own home just like I can have a drink in mine. It doesn’t matter if it’s ‘socially acceptable’ unless you’re doing it in public.

Your comparison is pretty meaningless anyway because you’ve only mentioned the (potential) health benefits of cannabis and none of the many risks associated with it, and in any case the health benefits you mention would likely be cancelled out by negative effects of inhaling smoke into your lungs all the time.

Plus, medical cannabis is only really linked with treating specific conditions - that doesn’t mean it’s beneficial for general health at all, in the same way that paracetamol is beneficial for someone with a fever but has no benefit for a healthy person who has no pain or fever to treat.

You’re also missing out the fact that alcohol is clearly labelled and regulated and its effects are therefore easily predicted, which is not the case with weed.

Alcohol can be bad for you. Weed can also be bad for you. Consuming either in your own home is entirely your choice and nobody’s likely to stop you.

Acetaminophen is harmful if overdosed but there are studies that suggest that it helps with blood glucose control and age related muscle deterioration

I’m not much of a drinker anymore although I have the odd drink every now and again. I’m also not a smoker and I find the smell cloying like pipe tobacco. I was however in Colorado a couple of years ago and went to a pharmacy with a friend who was buying edibles. ( I didn’t ) I did think it was worth considering whether legalising cannabis might be an option l. However I have had to deal with more than one person suffering from cannabis psychosis and my god they’re so difficult to manage. At the time no mental health facility would take them so they’d be rampaging and you’d have nowhere to take them. I can remember one guy naked in a cell, covered in his own shit and masturbating. That’s enough to put anyone off it for life.

XWKD · 24/12/2025 23:59

Most people manage to drink with no ill effects. That's why it's socially acceptable.

Give over with the 'weed is harmless' propaganda. Taken in large quantities it's not harmless at all, being under the influence and in control of a vehicle, it's not harmles either. Parents who are high aren't much cop if they're asleep or too 'chilled' to react to their children. The dangers are just the same as alcohol.

And then there's the negative effects it has on your mental health. Speaking from experience, would never smoke it again now. Everyone I know who smoked suffered poor mental health from it (won't admit it though until you quit).

VaxMerstappen · 25/12/2025 00:34

Drink often makes people more entertaining and better company to be around.

Weed smokers, at least in my experience, are almost always incredibly dull people.

patooties · 25/12/2025 00:40

Not really bothered about the legality of weed but it really stinks and stoners are often really boring (as are actual drunks) a couple of glasses of wine with friends can be fun, as can getting absolutely mortal and dancing in the kitchen. But stoned? Nah, not for me now, it’s just not sociable.

chickenfucker · 25/12/2025 00:48

Whatever your thoughts on how rational this is, weed is an illegal drug and alcohol isn't, this makes a difference in how openly it's used in front of children (rightly).

Catladywithoutacat · 25/12/2025 01:23

Do what you want who cares what others think

Blogswife · 27/12/2025 20:26

Weed stinks and so does anybody smoking it .

suburberphobe · 27/12/2025 20:35

Love me some wine, love me some weed too.

Mums Net loves to get their knickers into a twist about everything, LOL.

Love it though.

I can always relate to it all...

suburberphobe · 27/12/2025 20:40

Weed stinks and so does anybody smoking it

I would prefer to have a spiff at home than you belching out your car exhaust thanks.

Which one do you think is more healthy>??

Marylou2 · 27/12/2025 20:44

I don't do either but there's a massive difference between buying a bottle of wine in M&S and an illegal drug.

Daleksatemyshed · 27/12/2025 21:00

Drink drivers are quite rightly reviled but the police catch more people drug driving, police are carrying drug tests now just as they carry tests for alcohol. It's amazing how many people think they're still in control on drugs
