Xmas day in PJs?

Ultravox · 24/12/2025 11:13

I read it on here quite a lot that people spend all of Xmas day in PJs. Each to their own and all that but I just can’t imagine it…I guess I could imagine it more if we got a takeaway for dinner but just can’t imagine cooking & eating a Xmas dinner in PJs! So am I in a minority? Is it normal?

Can someone please add a link to the sort of pjs they mean? I cannot comprehend wearing a pair of pjs during the day and it NOT being utterly slovenly. I think I must be misunderstanding something.

These are ones I’ve worn in previous years

Christmas day in our house growing up we would all dress smartly! Dad would have his Christmas tie, mum in a smart top and christmas earings, us in any new clothes :) We still do it to this day. I could never imagine wearing pj’s for Christmas! But then Im the type of person who got dressed smartly and put a full face of make-up on when my contractions started 😂 so each to their own

I can’t imagine that level of dressing up when you’re only eating at home - doesn’t seem very relaxing or practical for playing with toddlers on the floor or family games like Twister (big favourite in our home).

No, that’s bonkers, sorry.

Myself and DH get dressed and both sets of parents come to us, also dressed. Me and my mum like to make a bit of effort, nice top and jeans or knitted dress. My DS who is 13 has announced he's wearing PJ's, he'll be getting showered and teeth clean etc then put on fresh undies and PJ's. I've no issue with it at all.

What’s wrong with them - they were gorgeous on and I felt great in them.

They are nightwear. And look very much like they’re nightwear. If any relative wore this at Christmas we’d be getting them sectioned. Surely these threads are just trolls? No one can seriously think wearing PJs like that during the day id ok?

There's nothing wrong with them. Some people can't comprehend that not everyone wants to get dressed up on Christmas day

if you read earlier in the thread, we’ll have 20 of our extended family with us tomorrow - all will be wearing themed pj’s for the annual competition.

The pj’s I have are silk and beautiful - definitely won’t be worn in bed

Are you normally this ignorant facetious about mental health?

Some of the most mentally unwell people I know always look very well out together. Some of the most well functioning people I know couldn't give a fig what they look like.

I often wear very comfortable/casual clothes due to a physical disability. Ignorant comments say more about the superficiality of the person making them than they do about the person wearing the outfit in

Clefable · 24/12/2025 22:13

I’m now committed to wearing PJs all day tomorrow. Christmas Highland cow ones that are super soft. Merry Christmas! 🐮

namechangetheworld · 24/12/2025 22:19

I just find the idea of spending the day in pyjamas - even clean ones - really grim. Especially the thought of eating Christmas dinner in them. Boke!

DC will wear their onesies/dressing gowns to open stocking bits (usually in our bedroom anyway) but then have to get dressed. Nothing fancy, just jumpers and leggings, but they need to be washed and dressed before opening anything else.

What's the prize?

I kinda wish I'd got silk jammies for Christmas now. They do feel nice on.

Not everyone is having a Christmas dinner. We're not.

You realise that's totally irrational though?
I can't imagine being that limited in my thinking.

Objectively a decent fresh pair of pyjamas is no different from casual wear and probably covers far more than a skimpy party dress would.

Same, we are having a huge cheeseboard with salads and fresh bread and salamis.

Horses for courses, I guess! The thought of spending ANY day in pyjamas (except when ill and confined to the bed) honestly makes me feel a bit ill. Especially Christmas, when people are trying to take nice family photos. Generally pyjamas are thin, crease easily, and, well, look like pyjamas. And if you're spending £200 on polyester silk pyjamas just to sit around in them on Christmas Day that's bonkers.

Tbh we don't treat Christmas as a photo shoot we are too busy chatting and playing games

Decent pyjamas don't have to be made of silk and can be perfectly robust.

Logically your response is entirely irrational. Most pyjamas are far more substantial than shorts and t shirt or a little party dress and noone would baulk at living in either of those.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 24/12/2025 22:47

Bayleaf30 · 24/12/2025 13:34

If you’re making the effort to get showered, changed, presumably put underwear on, then put PJs on I don’t get why you wouldn’t just get dressed in normal lounge clothes. That way you can also go outside when needed.

I’d be too cold sitting around in PJs anyway. All power to you though if it works for you.

This is a fine line though - I have bought “lounge wear” that I regular sleep in, and “pyjamas” that look more like lounge wear and that I wear as such as you’d never know they’d been marketed as pyjamas.

I'm not sure why you equate "taking family photos" with "treating Christmas as a photo shoot". Don't you ever take photos of your loved ones on special occasions? Or do you think it somehow spoils the fun?

And no, pyjamas aren't generally 'robust' - they're designed for sleeping in. So quite the opposite, really.

its never stopped the crazy family games :) baring in mind we are farmers, so it makes a massive change for us to have an excuse to dress up

FromageTime · 24/12/2025 22:53

We sleep naked, so any pyjamas I own are strictly for lounging. I’d think it was a bit skanky to spend the day wearing pyjamas you’ve slept in, but I might change into my Desmond and Dempsey ones after our morning dog walk as it’s just immediate family here tomorrow.

I guess I might take the odd photo on Christmas day but not really,.I tend to take photos when we're out and about.

And I don't know where you buy your pyjamas but mine are warm and cosy and not at all flimsy.

Honeyandwine · 24/12/2025 23:06

I LOVE pjs and will wear them as soon as I am home. They are comfortable and clean. I don’t understand how people can wear jeans and relax. My kids will wear their new pjs.

billiongulls · 24/12/2025 23:16

I mean, who cares? Youv wear what you want, other people wear what they want, everyone is happy.

SouthernNights59 · 24/12/2025 23:38

I agree OP, and never, ever, spend the day in pjs unless I'm ill. Thankfully people don't do it here as Christmas is in summer, but the very idea of spending the day in pjs gives me the shudders. I would feel like I'd given up on life. And, I might add, I am spending the day alone, not even then would I contemplate it. It's downright weird.
