Xmas day in PJs?

Ultravox · 24/12/2025 11:13

I read it on here quite a lot that people spend all of Xmas day in PJs. Each to their own and all that but I just can’t imagine it…I guess I could imagine it more if we got a takeaway for dinner but just can’t imagine cooking & eating a Xmas dinner in PJs! So am I in a minority? Is it normal?

Because they're not day clothes.

i think it's just that gross seems an over statement for getting up, washed and clean clothes on just because those clothes were last worn in bed before being washed again

@AshesUnderUricon why are you spending your Christmas breaking into peoples houses to stare at their thinly veiled genitalia? You know Netflix is approx £6 for a month.

😅

DetectiveDouche · 24/12/2025 16:26

I can't imagine it personally because there has never been a Christmas where I haven't had to go out (picking up/dropping off family members etc). Sounds nice though.. especially if they were new Christmassy pjs

Emmz1510 · 24/12/2025 16:26

We don’t do it although nothing wrong with it. My daughter probably would given half a chance but she’s getting a lot of clothes this year so it’s nice for her to be dressed in them. But yeah, wearing fresh clean jammies after having had a shower, brushed teeth, possibly with hair and make up done if that’s what you like, is a lot different from lazing around all day in the pyjamas you wore last night and doing nothing about personal hygiene!

MildlyAnnoyed · 24/12/2025 16:30

I’d always get dressed on any day not just Christmas Day.

toastandegg · 24/12/2025 16:40

Immediate family only here, clean pyjamas will be on after I’ve showered and will stay on until I take them off for bed, no chance of being cold as I will be cooking.

phoenixrosehere · 24/12/2025 16:45

Only pjs if we’re staying in our home for Christmas which only started in 2020 and happens every few years other than that we were staying with in-laws and the very occasion my parents since they are in the States.

I’m not bothered either way and don’t care why others do. The day is not that relaxing for me whether I’m in pjs or every day clothes.

I don't want to look at anyone's genitalia bulging through thin cotton, thanks.

I must disagree, it used to be the highlight for us at Christmas in the Cabinet Office.

( I should add that not all genitalia was bulging 😉)

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 24/12/2025 16:47

I’m Team: Get Dressed on Christmas Day.
It’s so louche to sit around in your pyjamas all day.

AgnesMcDoo · 24/12/2025 16:48

Not for me. But each to their own.

What can’t you do on Christmas Day in pj’s that you can in regular clothes (other than go outside which we won’t be doing)?

Theres only DH, myself and 2 DC but i would never stay in PJs on Christmas day unless I were really ill. It's just downright slovenly.

ChronicallyMum · 24/12/2025 16:53

I’ve spent the last 4 days in Pjs. Only reason I’ll have proper clothes on tomorrow is because I’m working.

Why are new silk pj’s slovenly?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/12/2025 17:39

I think it’s fine if you want to wear PJs. But it think it’s a minority of people who do it, and quite a recent thing. Not that either of those things make it wrong but I wouldn’t be worrying about it, OP.

I reckon the split is about 10% of people wear PJ, about 20% “dress up” as though they were going out for an evening (even though it’s the day), and the vast majority wear normal clothes or a slightly nicer variety thereof.

Ive made up those percentages entirely but just based on people I’ve spoken to or seen post on here or elsewhere about it. So jot scientific. A sizeable number of people go for an Xmas day walk so it’s got to be along those lines, unless they change again afterwards.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/12/2025 17:41

What I really don’t understand is buying different PJs to wear on the day - because why not get dressed? Or wear a tracksuit? I wouldn’t want my house hot enough that wearing PJs felt right tbh.

It’s just clothes though isn’t it so getting up and dressed and changing into pjs or jeans is not that different.

They are completely different.

Pyjamas are what you wear in bed.

"Clothes" are for normal daytime.

Of course, you can wear pyjamas during Christmas Day if you want. You could also wear a bikini, a wedding dress or clown shoes. But, like pyjamas, none of these things are normal daytime attire.

WalkDontWalk · 24/12/2025 17:46

TallulahBetty · 24/12/2025 12:12

Because they're not day clothes.

'not day clothes' = pyjamas.

So your answer to the question, 'Why not pyjamas?' is 'Because they're pyjamas'.

Which isn't desperately enlightening really.

At our house, incidentally, 'not going out or having anyone round clothes' = pyjamas. So we're quite likely to spend the whole of Christmas day in pyjamas.

In fact, if I can get away with it, I'll wear nothing other than pyjamas till January.

I don't get it either. If you shower, get ready and everything, why do you chose nightwear?

And why do you only buy horrendously uncomfortable clothes that you cannot wear them during the day?😂

what's comfy when you are sleeping at night, or wearing just before going to bed is really not that comfy for days activities?

I don't care what people do, but it's weird.

mellongoose · 24/12/2025 17:49

Well I’m going swimming in the morning so it would be weird and awkward if the rest of the beach saw me do it in my pjs. Not to mention cumbersome and cold!

thetallfairy · 24/12/2025 17:50

professionalhomebody · 24/12/2025 11:23

I put fresh pjs on, usually a pair of new Chelsea peers as a little treat to myself. Not ones I’ve slept in

The most expensive brand are much more prestigious right?😃😃😆

I don't share the modern fondness for daytime wearing of PJs. My proper clothes are just as comfortable, nicer to look at and also warmer. I think that for some people they stand for relaxation and cosiness?
