To have not lied to DS about trans actor in Last Christmas?

DungOnATwig · 24/12/2025 01:10

Watching above with DD17 (lesbian) and DS11 (straight) earlier today. One scene where a female presenting (long hair + fake eyelashes) but clearly biologically male actor plays a doctor (just Dr). DS says "that......lady sounds like a man".

I said yeah it is a man love. A man who identifies as a sex they are not.

DD paused then typed a wee bit more furiously than usual for 30 secs but then was ok. She knows tbf. She's lesbian and not pan.

It was so distilled down to me at the point of his very innocent (and tentative so as not to offend question) that I am not prepared to lie to my kid about the fucking fundamentals of life and tell them that person is a woman. Fuck that.

Merry Christmas 🍷

Also FUCK THAT FILM 😭😭😭😭😭

“And also no trans people have not always existed.”

How is this known?

When archaeologists dig up skeletons from thousands of years ago they can tell the people were trans and not binary male or female because…oh…um…[insert TRA word salad bingo here eg references to there being 312 different genders, literal violence, genocide etc etc].

Fair enough but OP’s son did notice and asked a question.

OP wanted to know if she was reasonable in her answer.

I've also seen it many times, and NEVER noticed this character - even with the helpful link above from a PP, still dont remember them.

Yeah he knows who David Bowie is already but thanks 👍

No one really cares what you think

This is virtue signalling at it's worst

A better answer is, “think it’s a trans woman”

What does that mean to an 11 year old though?

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/12/2025 11:38

TooMuchStop · 24/12/2025 11:31

To anyone who doesn’t want to deny biology and isn’t scared of bringing called transphobic because they deal with scientific facts, not just feelings.

Fine. For the umpteenth time, though. I didn’t bloody notice 😁

pikkumyy77 · 24/12/2025 11:31

So what? Lots of things are new. Rights for wimen are new. Rights for gays are new. Being anti slavery is new. New doesn’t mean bad.

'New' doesn't mean positive or negative necessarily. Everything needs to be assessed on its merits

Deciding that gender identity is more important than sex in classifying humans has led to giving men access to women's single sex spaces. Sports, prisons, rape crisis centres, domestic violence shelters. If you think that's a positive development, well, you do you.

Personally I'd prefer if we supported people to express themselves how they choose, while upholding the importance and primacy of sex.

It’s bad for women if it means losing their rights to single sex spaces that give them privacy and dignity, and losing out in sports. An ideology that is based on gender stereotypes, resulting in people feeling they need to change socially and physically, taking puberty blockers and hormones that result in incontinence, loss of sexual function, osteoporosis….i could go on…. Yes, it’s a bad thing.

It's Rebecca Root who was born male and now identifies as female in a relationship that some call lesbian with a biological female. A fairly well known actor.

In the 2019 film the trans individual Rebecca plays a doctor.

Oh that’s so random, I’ve actually met her! I’m pretty sure she does identify as female.

He does, but he is a man and OP was right to be honest about that with her child.

Kimura · 24/12/2025 11:53

littleburn · 24/12/2025 10:33

Oh course you are unreasonable OP. Anything other than chastising your child for not instantly believing the person is a woman is, of course, transphobic. Correctly describing a trans woman as a man who believes themselves to be a woman is also deeply transphobic.

Nobody on this thread has suggested anything of the sort though, have they?

I'll never understand people who invent fictitious scenarios to get mad at.

awrbc81 · 24/12/2025 11:54

I’d have just said “that is a man” and moved on, don’t think there’s much more to say to an 11 year old. I’m not prepared to lie about people’s sex either.
Your DD is a lesbian = not sleeping with men, she knows exactly what a man is even if she doesn’t want to admit that yet!

Unfortunately, as I have explained up thread, parents need to have these conversations with their 11 year old as they head into or are already in year 7.

bugalugs45 · 24/12/2025 12:03

My 5 year old niece shouted extremely loudly at the pantomime dame , that’s not a lady , it’s a man! As I slid down my seat embarrassed 🤣 but she wasn’t wrong of course !

Did you know that there was a "trans actor" in the film before you chose to watch it? If so why did you watch it?

Abracadabra12345 · 24/12/2025 12:07

Last Christmas is my favourite Christmas film and I’ve seen it 8 times yet didn’t click that the doctor was trans…😆

Why wouldn’t they?

Lostsoultrip · 24/12/2025 12:10

Allow your child to form their own opinions as they get older rather than enforcing yours. A simple 'it's someone who was born a man but now lives as a woman' would have sufficed. You're not right just because you think you are and you risk alienating your children with your views. If you wish to share your views make sure you give the other side. Some people believe x but some believe y.

Alucard55 · 24/12/2025 12:11

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/12/2025 11:10

I’ve looked at photos on Google because of this thread. Passes for a woman, to me. I’ve seen more masculine looking female born actresses. Angelica Houston, Tilda Swinton, for example.

Very clearly a man.

Same but then again I am clearly much more 'life's too short to worry about the lifestyle of others' than the OP.

But what does 'living as a woman' even mean? Once you get into these conversations, you start enforcing gender stereotypes, which I'm not sure why anyone would want to do.

What does living as a woman mean? What do women ‘do’ that makes their life, ‘living as a woman’. It’s being a woman that means you live as one. Men aren’t women so therefore how can they live as a woman?

No to me and some others on the thread. Maybe because we’re not particularly looking for trans actors 🤷‍♀️

It's so boring listening to the same trans arguments pretty much daily on here.
