AIBU Should dogs be invited in?

My friend came round yesterday to drop something off but had her dog with her. I had been getting everything ready for visitors arriving to stay and have no pets - AIBU to just have a chat on the doorstep and not invite her in when it’s all clean and ready for my visitors imminent arrival? (Obviously without the dog she’d have been more than welcome).

Why do dog owners think they should take their dogs everywhere these days??

Why would you not just leave the dog in the car if you were going to stand on the doorstep anyway?

I don't leave mine in the car because I'd want to lock the car and then him moving around inside it would set the alarm off. I know I can switch that off somehow but would have to look it up and it's just easier to get him out of the car for a moment.

Because there might be a very interesting sniff to be had on the pavement. And the owner thought, "why not let her out, she enjoys every sniff."

Sniffing different smells brings so much joy to dogs (and works their brain). If you dont have dogs, you really wouldn't understand and that's ...well... understandable.

I have dogs, have always had dogs, IME sniffing normally leads to pissing.. again, not something I would want any of my dogs doing in someone front garden if I had the option to either leave them at home, or leave them in the car while I stood outside.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I must say it's not my experience (I own a female dog not sure if that makes a difference?) my dog loves a good sniff sumply for the joy of sniffing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

YABU. Your friend was just dropping by, didn’t ask to bring her dog in, and probably only let it out to stretch its legs or avoid setting off the car alarm. Your guilt and need to be overly hospitable are on you. No idea why you’re complaining about dog-friendly places or other dog owners. Busy prepping for guests? That’s fine, you could have just been honest, and your friend would have understood. Sounds like she had places to be anyway.

People with dogs are strange people. You wouldn't bring any other animal to someones front door and expect it to be considered normal.

Why does it matter if you consider it 'normal'?

The woman was just dropping something off and happened to have her dog with her.

It seems like dog owners aren't the only strange ones.

Oona really hates dogs and dog owners. The level of hatred they have for them is not normal.

Oh, thanks, didn't realise! 👀🤣

Bless 'em.

I’d be ok to invite in to the hall/kitchen as we have laminate flooring in those rooms but a friend with a dog expects to not be invited in when her dog is in tow

I was with you until this weird question 😳

Your friend turned up with her dog and that means that 'dog owners think they should take their dogs everywhere these days'?

Thank goodness my two never got this memo.

Yes me too. Your friend was probably killing two birds with one stone, walking the dog and doing her errand.

1980isitjustme · 22/12/2025 22:58

It just felt rude to not invite her in so was wondering whether it would be considered unreasonable or not.

Your feelings are your problem. It's the not the fault of pet owners who take their pets out with them.

Coffeeishot · 23/12/2025 17:25

Your friend walked the dog whilst dropping off"something" it was a win/win for her. She probably didn't want to come in.

Dog owner let her job ,bite and cover our clothes in mud on a public foot path in Newport wetlands today ,she called us miserable when I asked her to put it on a lead .It would have terrified a child .Why do dog owners think this is cute !

Howardyoudo · 23/12/2025 17:44

Yanbu, I cannot stand this culture of dogs everywhere. I don’t have pets so wouldn’t have anyone else’s in my home.

That’s a completely different situation. Why bring it up?

PurpleThistle7 · 23/12/2025 18:01

I am allergic so don’t have dogs in my house. It would be a strange thing to assume your dog can just go in someone’s house to be honest. We have a few friends who have asked and we just say no - unless it’s like a bbq and the dog will stay outside. Don’t think it’s ever offended anyone.

Maestoso · 23/12/2025 18:03

She didn't want to be invited in, that's why she took the dog. Pets are a great excuse to get out of socialising.

Isit2026yet · 23/12/2025 18:19

@1980isitjustme we have two dogs and have declined friends coming to stay because they think they can just bring their dog.

Cactusmad · 23/12/2025 18:23

I did same today , didn’t want to go in . Dog was going on a walk just after. I was as combining stuff as it’s a busy time. Dog owners usually get that their pet isn’t welcome every where. I had to tell friend multiple times as I moved off that I didn’t want to go inside. I was just dropping stuff off. I wouldn’t fret .

Yes this, she was probably busy and had no intention of stopping that is what most people do if they are just dropping by quickly.

1980isitjustme · 22/12/2025 23:02

I did exactly this but still was feeling a bit guilty.

Seriously you can ask a normal question here and be made to feel you’re being ridiculous. It was fine to chat on the doorstep but I would feel a bit bad like you for not asking them in.

MrsVBS · 23/12/2025 18:48

Completely agree with you, I don’t have a dog and wouldn’t ask someone in who had theirs with them.

Livelovebehappy · 23/12/2025 18:53

She was just dropping something off. Didn’t ask to come in? In which case pretty irrelevant whether you wanted to invite her in or not, because you don’t know her expectations. In fact, she may have taken him with her on purpose just so that she had an excuse not to go into your home. I’ve done this in the past where I’ve been on a tight schedule and it’s a good reason to just drop and go..

And this has anything to do with the OPs situation because? ……….

“Another dog bashing thread” ?

i’ve never seen any dog bashing threads and just didn’t want a dog in my house

Op, stop it….. if you haven’t seen dog bashing threads then I’m assuming you’re new to MN? They’re on here weekly. You mention in one of your posts about ‘dogs now being allowed in shops’. This is a very common issue raised on MN all the time, which makes me think you’ve aware that the shop issue has been done to death, so have decided to introduce a new situation, but want it to lead to ‘dogs now being allowed in shops’…..
