AIBU Should dogs be invited in?

My friend came round yesterday to drop something off but had her dog with her. I had been getting everything ready for visitors arriving to stay and have no pets - AIBU to just have a chat on the doorstep and not invite her in when it’s all clean and ready for my visitors imminent arrival? (Obviously without the dog she’d have been more than welcome).

Why do dog owners think they should take their dogs everywhere these days??

All that seems to have happened is she needed to drop something off to you and thought she'd walk the dog at the same time.

Two birds, one stone.

Agreed. The OP seems to have invented a whole narrative simply to enable her to start a thread about how much she doesn't like dogs...

greenwithglee · 22/12/2025 23:06

this is very much a you problem. She wasn't intending to come in- she just wanted to drop some stuff off, so she called to check you were in and combined the visit with other chores she had to do. Your feeling inhospitable is nothing to do with her or the choices she made.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/12/2025 23:07

Was the dog on the doorstep or in the car?

Bloody fingers

She had driven to get to mine, not walked. If she had walked I would agree.

Dog owners drive places to walk their dogs. This is such a fucking non-thread.

Did your friend have an issue about not being invited in?

She was just dropping stuff off. I’ve been dropping gifts off, taking our dogs with me and the last thing I want is to be invited in because I’m busy dropping things off to lots of people. Quick doorstep chat is enough.

It seems you’re just making things up and jumping to conclusions to just start another dog bashing thread.

As for you title question, there’s no right or wrong about what should be done. You’re an adult, you decide who comes in your house. Do you really need telling?

“Another dog bashing thread” ?

i’ve never seen any dog bashing threads and just didn’t want a dog in my house

I have dogs and if I had them with me whilst dropping something off I wouldn't expect to be invited in. If I expected to be invited in then I would go without my dogs. I would only take them if I was trying to kill two birds with one stone to save time walking them later. I would feel uncomfortable taking them in to a friends home, especially if they didn't own pets themselves. I obviously love my dogs but I don't expect everyone else to love them!

But no one had any expectations of the dog going in your house... You've just straight up made stuff up so you can start a thread about why you don't like dogs?

Bollock have you not seen a dog bashing thread, there's one every week

Well at least the dog gets out of the house and no doubt a wee etc.

It still has nothing to do with other dog owners.

I don’t dislike dogs but don’t want one in my house. Was just asking whether this was considered reasonable or not.

I think if she drove to your house and got the dog out of the car to come to the door, then it’s self-evident that she expected you to invite them in. Which is astoundingly ignorant and presumptuous of her, and it’s not you who should be embarrassed.

suki1964 · 22/12/2025 23:11

As a dog, cat, and hen owner, I dont invite friends and neighbours into my home with their pets.

In the summer - sure - come have a coffee, bring the dog - but we are in the garden

And tbh I honestly dont know of anyone who would bring their pet for an invited visit

Sure we have friends, and I do it myself, if Im dropping something off, picking something up, Ill use that time to walk my dog, but Id never expect to be invited in

Quicklyquicklyquicker · 22/12/2025 23:12

I’m a dog owner. I would never take my dog into someone’s house, unless they specifically wanted it.

Perfectly reasonable.

In fact if I really don't want to be invited into someone's house, I'll bring my dog so I have an excuse not to.

If you drive to someone's house, park outside, get your dog out and walk up to the door - aren't you expecting to be invited in?

The dog probably needed a wee 🤷‍♀️

Or maybe like my dog, would've kicked up merry hell if she'd shut the car door.

You obviously don't like dogs though?

Your final statement in the first post makes your true intent clear. She took the dog with her to do an errand nothing more.

Your story about it going everywhere and not wanting it in the house is all completely nonsensical and designed to create an argument about dogs.

I’m still not over the D-Lab that wasn’t invited to Christmas day lunch.

I honestly haven’t. Maybe my algorithms don’t show them because I usually have no interaction with anything about dogs 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve never owned a dog, but wouldn’t have a problem with a friend’s dog popping in for a short while. However, I don’t have the sort of friends who would allow their dog to make a mess in someone else’s house without clearing it up. I guess it depends on what you think about your friend…
