Lighthearted very serious ramble 🤣

So I am hosting Xmas. Getting xyz for all variants of catering needs and tastes.

The ONE bloody thing for ME is a Salmon Platter featuring a Salmon Terrine. This is very important!

Salmon Gate is very competitive on the shelves. Due to the short shelf life of salmon pates it’s a bit of military coordination.

There is one acceptable salmon pate in the country. I know I have tried everyone. In the dark hours of last eve I have been informed the 25th dated drop for that was 3am this morning. Apparently in good quantity so later today I will sidle down to secure the pate.

I have perused the terrine options. On my late night travels last night I have scoped out all the salmon terrine options and drop times/ quantities. My most preferred option of which is the M&S terrine; now available as of 10.30 this morning. We have a small store so competition is on; lest I have to trek ungodly distance!

I tell DP he needs to get up and be there for its opening. 10.30 comes and goes! I say you are skating on thin ice! GET OFF YOUR BLOODY ARSE. Raised voices may have been applied.

Anyway he’s just left. Will he secure the goods? Has he left it too late? Will I be touring the country later today?

Dear reader please send safe Salmon wishes. I actually do feel quite some stress about this 😅

All this fuss over a bit of fishy mush and one day.
It's just one day, exactly the same as all the others before and those after it, the only difference is that the shops will be shut for that one single day. I'm sure no-one is going to die of starvation because the country has shut for a single day.
As for the fishy mush, I'm sure plenty of shops sell it and if you can't have it for that particular day, there'll be other days and/or other things to eat.

Well you have forced me a google. And apparently M&S haven’t used antibiotics for 8 years. So that’s a relief.

corporate.marksandspencer.com/newsroom/blog/what-makes-ms-salmon-responsibly-sourced

My partner on the other hand. I did tell him he best bring the goods home. So what happens in M&S stays in M&S and I couldn’t say. But the stakes were high so… 😅

They still use antibiotics. Not to promote growth or as a preventative measure, but to treat active disease.

And farmed salmon are highly prone to disease - M&S's density is better than many, but still nowhere near natural, and if you're buying salmon from less expensive supermarkets, it's a grim state of affairs.

M&S's welfare standards talk a good game, but it is still an intensive farming method. If you liken it to chicken farming, their standards are aligned with colony cages - better than true battery farming, but nowhere near barn/free range level of welfare standard. There are still high numbers of fish in fixed pens, horrific levels of sea lice, and no meaningful ability to range, migrate or avoid stressors. Salmon are a migratory fish. Their biological imperative and instinct is to swim hundreds if not thousands of miles to their natal river, to spawn. Keeping them in close quarters in circular pens to swim round and round is outrageously cruel.

RSPCA Assured does not address the impact that farmed salmon has on wild stock. The impacts from escapes are dire. Storm damage and predator damage can lead to thousands/hundreds of thousands of farmed fish escaping every year. Pathetically, they immediately follow their instinct to spawn and enter our rivers. When they breed with wild salmon, the resulting offspring is genetically weak and unable to thrive in the wild. Wild salmon stocks are weakened and compromised.

It's just a gross industry.

And if you've ever eaten line-caught salmon, you'll understand that the lurid pink gelatinous stuff you think is salmon, is nothing like it. Wild salmon isn't brigh pink, and is a firm, muscular fish.

I know you're not interested in the salmon activists, but other mumsnetters might be. I'm an animal lover and a committed carnivore and a pescator. I care about what I eat. Scottish farmed salmon ain't it.

I feel your pain OP, and your relief. DP does a big Waitrose shop for treats before Christmas and we went Sunday with the idea that we'd go to M&S after because all I wanted was the camembert with hot honey and bacon thank you M&S I totally bought into your marketing campaign
Only because it was Sunday M&S closed earlier than Waitrose so we missed out on going there. I did a dash this morning and they'd sold out. The assistant I asked if they had anymore sighed when she replied not, so I'm obviously not the only one buying into the marketing! Anyway, DP was going into a nearby town tonight for a night out so went early and picked one up from there. I was so relieved! I hope it's as good as I think it will be! Although it has spent most of the evening under piles of coats so might be a little sweaty...

Well I appreciate your dedication for sure! We want the best salmon here and no mushy mush.

What colour is it supposed to be? Like a rainbow trout? Beige Off pink?

I don’t know if I have ever eaten line caught but I do like good salmon and do not buy from cheap stores. I actually rarely buy it. Hence my Christmas salmon feast being so special to me.

Yay! I am so pleased for you 🥳

Secret tip for next time with M&S which hopefully saves a wasted trip. The app shows availability in store online. I am not sure how quick it updates their sales though hence my urgent requests for DP to get out there and grab it!

Enjoy your Camembert delight 👌

Wild salmon is a bright red, not pink/orangey pink. It looks like red meat, and it has fewer fat stripes through it.

Look for wild Alaskan Sockeye - it's consistently available at Waitrose, and can be found at other supermarkets from time to time. Much as it pains me to say it. avoid anything Scottish. It's greenwashed to fuck.

You can buy online... https://www.thefishsociety.co.uk/collections/wild-salmon?filter.v.availability=1&filter.v.price.gte=0

Thank you for meeting my salmon insanity with good cheer.

I'm fed up to see that you got it. I had dashed out and bought one, and was poised to say you could have it for £1k. :)

Ooo well that makes sense! I do prefer the darker stuff but assumed that was the smoking. I am not sure what colour I was expecting you to say at all. I was sitting here wondering whether maybe it was so muscular as to look white or maybe even blue like a tuna 😂 It’s good to learn more so thank you for sharing.

But of course we do also wish to enjoy our salmon suppers now - Poor souls are already in our fridges so I do think it’s only respectful to enjoy them the best we can 😅

The big question is, do we get to see a photo of it in the fridge and will it deserve its own fridge thread? 😉

What a name! 👌

I did see the anti fridge thread yesterday and someone tried to drag my terrine into it! Much to my displeasure!

So no I am not sure I dare post the fridgeshot 😅

Thaks for the recommendation @Salmongate inspired by your post I popped into our local M&S this morning to get one. I saw it was in stock on the app and got there for the time it opened 8am - to find a queue outside! Not sure of that is normal or they had all read your thread! Anyway, they had loads in our shop - BBE 27 Dec, so I grabbed one as I have my parents visiting on Boxing Day and I think they will enjoy this. It was a bit smaller than I was expecting from your photo - but then if it was scaled up any more it would have been a lot more money. Merry Christmas!
