To be concerned about my dd being friends with this woman

Holiday888 · 11/12/2025 14:48

My dd is only 22 year old and she’s become friends with a middle aged 29 year old lady. Aibu to be concerned due to the huge age gap and the fact this woman must have completely different life goals to my young daughter

OP posts:

This is a goady post designed to create a debate about what denotes middle age.

RoastLambs · 11/12/2025 15:32

Perhaps your daughter is seeking a mother figure who isn’t nuts.

babyproblems · 11/12/2025 15:34

LOL at 29 being middle aged 😂😂😂😂

Is this a wind up OP?
29. Middle aged?

Edited

Even if she's 49, I don't see a problem in a friendship situation, assuming she has other friends too, I sometimes see friends from work who are older or younger than me for lunch or whatever, and don't see an issue. If people are in a relationship, that can be more of an issue if you're worried about an older person being controlling/taking advantage.

Moonlightfrog · 11/12/2025 15:35

Both are in their 20’s, I don’t see it as a huge gap. Your daughter is an adult. At the age of 22 I had a range of friends aged between 18 and 40. Adults of different ages can be friends and have relationships. I don’t see the issue.

HisNotHes · 11/12/2025 15:35

Middle aged 29 year old?!

Yeah i was thinking this too tbh.

Also people meet other people in lots of different situations don’t they. I have made friends with lots of different ages through work and hobbies and other mum friends.

amber763 · 11/12/2025 15:36

Well, its absolutely none of your business who your adult daughter is friends with. Not everone "settles down" at 29. 29 is not middle aged. 40 to 50, yes. Not 29. You sound bonkers.

'30 very soon in late July next year'

late July next year is not very soon !
it's 7 months away !!!

I'll be 50 soon, in roughly 1.......decade.

How old are you OP?

YourOliveBalonz · 11/12/2025 15:43

Picturing your 22 year old going up to her and saying ‘my mum says we can’t play anymore sorry’

Littlebitpsycho · 11/12/2025 15:44

Hahahahaha you are so ridiculous. I'm 36 and one of my best friends is 29 - oh my god call the friend police as I'm clearly brainwashing her! I also get on brilliantly with my yard owner who is in her mid 80s, oh the horror please send help!

fortyfifty · 11/12/2025 15:44

What do you think is going to happen to your DD? Presumably your DD has other friends too. You can't generalise about what someone 'should' be doing with their life once they are an adult. People in their 20s can be living quite different lives whether they are all 22 or all 29.

My DD recently started a graduate job and has found someone on her wavelength who is 28/29. Besides not giving it much thought, I'd say it's a positive. It's good to know people with some more life experience. The 29 year old still seems to be able to get out for social evenings 🙄

Sorry but what the fuck 😂😂😂😂

PorridgeAndSyrup · 11/12/2025 15:45

Is "friend" a euphemism for girlfriend? I only ask, because "different life stages" would be a more relevant concern in a romantic relationship rather than just being friends. I cannot for the life of me understand why it would be a problem for two women in their twenties to be friends.

Redrosesposies · 11/12/2025 15:45

How on earth are any of your adult daughter's friendships anything to do with you.
Poor woman (your daughter I mean).

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 11/12/2025 15:45

You are massively unreasonable and making a mountain out of molehill - unless there is other concerns, this is a nonsense thread!!

MirrorMirror1247 · 11/12/2025 15:46

I'm almost 39 and I don't consider myself middle aged!

That aside, there's nothing wrong with it. I've got friends that are several years older/younger than me.

surreygirly · 11/12/2025 15:46

Barking mad thread

They should be be settling down a 22 year old is still in party phrase I know I was

A 29 year old is still in party phase as I lived it.

absolutely fine for 22 year old to be friends with 29. I’d say they’re at very similar stages of life. When I graduated and got my first career type job I was 22 and my best friend from work was 29. We all partied (and worked hard).

accepted age brackets in a survey are as follows according to AI

Accepted age bands in surveys vary, but common patterns for adults often use 10-year brackets like
18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, and 65+

so I’d say at 22 so could equally mix with the first and the second bracket so even up to 34…. Positively ancient by your definition!

ExitPursuedByABare · 11/12/2025 15:47

One of my dearest friends is 12 years younger than me. We met when I was 28 through a shared hobby. I’m 66 now. Never seen it as an issue.
