To be concerned about my dd being friends with this woman

Holiday888 · 11/12/2025 14:48

My dd is only 22 year old and she’s become friends with a middle aged 29 year old lady. Aibu to be concerned due to the huge age gap and the fact this woman must have completely different life goals to my young daughter

OP posts:

How old are you OP?

At the very least she must be ‘elderly’ if her daughter is 5 years off middle aged!!!

MyMilchick · 11/12/2025 15:48

In your 20's is middle aged now? Yikes. Get a grip OP, your DD and this woman are both in their 20's, both young women

Do you expect your 22 year old to only be friends with other 22 year old, that’s so odd!

TessSaysYes · 11/12/2025 15:48

How odd...to be concerned I mean. What's wrong with you OP? 🥺😭

WildLeader · 11/12/2025 15:49

And you can be as ridiculously judgemental concerned as you like @Holiday888 , but a 22 yr old woman knows how to manage her friends and social life

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 11/12/2025 15:50

Wow! I've read some pretty weird posts on MN over the years but this is right up there!

I can't really conceive of a reason why you would have concerns about two young women in their twenties forming a friendship.

If you think 29 is too old for her, what would you consider to be a suitable age range for your dd's friends? What upper and lower age limits would be suitable?

What on earth are you actually worried about?

Moonlightdust · 11/12/2025 15:50

Oh get lost if you think 29 is middle aged. And stop sticking your nose into your ADULT daughter’s life.

Dollymylove · 11/12/2025 15:51

What a strange post. Are they in a relationship?
What is it you are worried about?
One of my good friends who I met at work is 25 years younger than me.
Another great friend was 25 years older, same age as my mum.
Nobody thought it was weird in the slightest!!

Friendlyfart · 11/12/2025 15:51

My son is 21 and one of his best mates is nearly 31. They met at uni and son will prob visit him in the xmas break. They met almost in the first day and ‘get’ each other. I was quite surprised DS made a connection to someone 10 years older, but the friend has been v supportive of DS so it’s worked well.
Whats wrong w the 29 year old?
29 is def not middle aged. Even 40 is pushing it. My nephew is 29 and I still think of him as a young man.

OrigamiOwls · 11/12/2025 15:51

When did 29 become middle aged?!

Rosecoffeecup · 11/12/2025 15:51

If you have a 22 year old and consider 29 middle aged, you must be practically dead?

Starlight1984 · 11/12/2025 15:52

Holiday888 · 11/12/2025 14:51

No shes 29 30 very soon in late July next year

Oh well if she's almost 30 then you're fine as she'll probably be dead soon anyway.

Velvetgoldmine · 11/12/2025 15:52

Are you mad? Friends come in all shapes, sizes and ages. I have friends in their twenties and friends in their late 70s. As a group of 40 year old women we regularly included a 100 year old man at our lunches. I am now mid sixties and hope not to be excluded from friendships due to my advanced age! And since when is 29 middle aged anyway?

Bestfootforward11 · 11/12/2025 15:53

29 is definitely not middle aged! 😂
I made a great friend when I was 24 who was 34 years old. We have been friends for 30 years now. I am godmother to her kids. We had a shared hobby and just clicked. There’s nothing weird or predatory with this kind of age gap. And you’re making lots of assumptions about what a 22 and 29 year old might do, no doubt based on your own experiences, but mine are very different. Unless there are other facts that are making you worry, there is nothing on the face of it that seems wrong with this friendship.

BunnyLake · 11/12/2025 15:53

Holiday888 · 11/12/2025 14:51

No as much as we all like to believe 60 is middle aged it isn’t

Well it’s not 29!!

Ecrire · 11/12/2025 15:53

Hi
How long is “party phrase”? (Phrase by the way not phase)
when does middle age begin?
when does middle age end?
when does old age begin?

Starlight1984 · 11/12/2025 15:52

I miss that bloody laughing emoji!

Balloonhearts · 11/12/2025 15:54

It's 7 years, that's nothing! I had a friend in his 50s when I was like 19. One of my friends now is 9! Her pony lives in the next stable to mine, we hack out together.

People find all sorts of common ground and you don't have to be at the same stage of life or have the same goals. My best friend and I have totally different life goals and there's only 5 months between us.

DinoLil · 11/12/2025 15:55

'Only 22 year old' and 'middle aged' at 29???!!!

Hahahaha!! I was married with my own home by 22. My best friend is 91, way older than my mum, I'm 54.

You've lost the plot, OP!! Get a grip, ffs.

JengaCupboard · 11/12/2025 15:55

Yet another goady wind-up post.. the third this week I think I've seen? Must be a slow week..

Parcell · 11/12/2025 15:55

Some 22 year olds are mature, some 29 year olds are immature. Seriously, unless there is something else you are being a bit silly.

Come to think of it, there is a 7 year age gap with me and my DH, or is that OK?? I am the older one. We met at a similar age.

MissDoubleU · 11/12/2025 15:56

It’s 7 years! That’s not a big age gap at all especially not for friends.

Most people are multidimensional. Many people in their 30’s and 40’s are still out partying enjoying their life, where some people in their 20’s are trying to settle down. Perhaps neither of them care as they see each other in a different context and enjoy discussing books or a shared hobby.

You’re being very fucking weird OP. Sorry.

BunnyLake · 11/12/2025 15:56

Middle age is generally early 40s to early 60s. It doesn’t actually mean middle of life expectancy.

Wishimaywishimight · 11/12/2025 15:57

Why on earth do people start these nonsensical threads?

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 11/12/2025 15:58

I was out for dinner last night with an ex colleague who is 31, and a mutual friend who is 59. I'm 55.

She loves spending time with us. We are matriachs/mentors to her, supporting her through our life experiences.
