Yr 1 child (P2 in Northern Ireland) and I'm 45.

MermaidMummy06 · 10/12/2025 21:47

It depends. I was 44 when my youngest started year 1. 40 with number 1. Where we live, and in the public school, that's old. I think I was the oldest mum there. Most were early 20's (& knew each other since childhood.)

Whereas my wealthy cousin who lives across town sent her DC to ritzy private schools & was 55 with her last one, said she was pretty normal age as most people who could afford those (ridiculous) prices had time to build wealth. Makes sense as without family money no young couple could afford it.

SIL was 38, in the city & told me she was the youngest in her mother's group. Average at the school gate.

It just depends where you live & the school. I feel more old these days at work, with the colleagues my age flying past me because they don't have the restriction of children anymore. Some have grandchildren!!

Had my first baby at 23, she is now 14 so I wasn’t even 30 when she started Reception.

Now pregnant at 37 will be 38 when she is born as she is due April 2026, I’ll be 42 by the time she starts reception class! DH will be 50 when baby is born.

Whichone1 · 10/12/2025 21:47

32 with my eldest

ineedhelp37 · 10/12/2025 21:48

I’ve been a right mix! With dd1 I was 26 when she was in y1 and I stood out as “a young mum”, dd2 I was 30 and Joe average, ds I’ll be 39 when he’ll be in year 1 and definitely feel old compared to other parents.

Mamabear487 · 10/12/2025 21:48

I was 31 when my oldest was in year 1. I’ll be 35 when my youngest is

FullOfMomsense · 10/12/2025 21:49

I was 26 with my first Year 1. I have 5 DC, other mums with multiple kids are around the same age, we seem to start early around here.

Age is just a number, there are parents of all ages around the world and I bet even in your child's school you're surrounded by people insecure about their age.

TidyCyan · 10/12/2025 21:49

I was 40. I'm 41 with a Y2!

Shoestalk · 10/12/2025 21:51

41 and shes my fourth. I was 31 when my eldest was in year 1. Im definitely not the only 40 something mum with a child in year 1. Her two closest friends mums are 45 and 44.

Uptightmumma · 10/12/2025 21:53

I’ll be 41 in January

Anxietybummer · 10/12/2025 21:54

I will be 38 and 41. Everyone seems to be that sort of age bracket.

GlosGirl82 · 10/12/2025 21:54

43

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 10/12/2025 21:54

I’m 38, will be 40 when DS2 starts P1. I’d guess im one of the older mums in our class but not sure, I wish I was 28 though just for the energy I had then!

winnieanddaisy · 10/12/2025 21:54

When my eldest was year 1 I was 25 .

LillyLeaf · 10/12/2025 21:55

I'll be 43 soon. Some are a bit older, some similar to me or a bit younger, not many below 35

Denim4ever · 10/12/2025 21:57

I was 49 in Y1. I wasn't the oldest mum in either of the primaries our DS went to but I was in the top 5 in both 🤣

Songbird54321 · 10/12/2025 21:57

I was 29 when my first was in Y1 and there are a couple of parents I’d say were younger but majority older than me.
My second isn’t in Y1 yet but I will be 34 when she is and I’d say I’m more average in her class.
Tends to vary quite a lot across each class that I can see.

mindutopia · 10/12/2025 21:57

When mine were in Y1, I was 38 and 43. I would say most of the mums I know are roughly a similar age, give or take a few years. The outlier is one mum who I just found out is 28 (would have been 26). She looks late 30s to me, so I never would have guessed!

SharpFox · 10/12/2025 22:00

42 isn't anywhere near old! I'm 47 with a daughter in year 3. Lol! No one bats an eyelid (but im often told I look way younger). In my quite posh school, I'd say most mums are in their 40s. In the rougher areas, there'll be a lot of younger ones...just the way it seems to be. Don't sweat it. No one really cares how old anyone else is, they're just getting on with their lives and dealing with their own shit.

Kisshygge · 10/12/2025 22:02

I was 30, 32, 35, 37 and with my youngest I will be 40.

ilikeeggs · 10/12/2025 22:02

I’m 38 and do feel like one of the older ones this time. I was 31 when DD1 was in year 1.

Moaning5 · 10/12/2025 22:03

What an odd post 😂

Who cares !

I was 30 but I genuinely can’t remember any of the other mums being younger or older - we were just mums 🥰

Goldwren1923 · 10/12/2025 22:03

44!

Ihaveoflate · 10/12/2025 22:04

I was 44 when my only child was in year 1 and I wasn't the oldest mum.

The age range of parents in her class in huge. My DH and another dad are probably old enough to be the youngest dads' fathers! It really doesn't matter - noone gives a shit.

Tacox · 10/12/2025 22:04

FortyFacedFuckers · 10/12/2025 21:36

I was in my early twenties but some of them were double my age, I was really worried about being judged but I became really good friends with a few that were between 15-20 years older than me, it honestly doesn’t matter

Depends on the school. I had mine at 16 in year 3 now and I’m 24. The others are all way older than me with even a few grandparents raising their grandkids, none of them want to know me.
I wouldn’t worry about being too old at 42 though think most of these are in their 30s or 40s
