If u are a mum to a child in year 1 how old are u? Just cos I feel so old. I’m almost 42

OP posts:

So with my two DC I was aged 41 & 45 respectively when they were in Year 1

I felt pretty average really compared with all the other mums

Definitely think women are having babies later especially taking into account career progression, being able to afford a home/mortgage etc

JFC! 64? That’s appallingly selfish, that poor kid. Destined to be a young carer, poor little thing.

My friend was a carer her entire childhood and her Mum, who died at 43, had her in her early twenties. She had lost both (young!) parents by 25. There are no guarantees in life. My Gran had her last baby at 44 and died last year at 94, having lived completely independently until she was almost 90.

Many people who don’t conceive easily don’t have the luxury of choosing when to start their family. I’m 35, my DSD is 10, DH is 41. We planned when we started trying for us to be done by the time I was 35. Yet here we are, exploring adoption after years of failed IVF and pregnancy losses. So there’s every chance my DH could be pushing 50 with a year 1 or 2 child. It wasn’t a choice.

I will add that most of the parents in ds year group are around the same age and a couple of years older/younger, but I only know that because dh went to school with so many of them. (Small town, only a couple of primary's and people dont tend to leave, or come home when they start families)

Randomcrackedegg · 11/12/2025 20:28

Mine are all past year one now but I was 23, 30 and 44. Youngest is now in year 3 and I'm probably one of the oldest mums, but I don't really pay much attention to be fair

AliTheMinx · 11/12/2025 20:29

I would have been 39 when DS was in Year 1. I was one of the younger mums (but not young!).

EveryDayisFriday · 11/12/2025 20:31

I was 32 with DD1 and 36 with DD2 when they were in Y1.

Miaminmoo · 11/12/2025 20:34

When my DS1 was in Year 1 I was 39, when my DS2 was in Year 1 I was 42 and I couldn’t have cared less, we had a variety of ages in my Mum group, some 10 years younger than me. It is what it is.

Julimia · 11/12/2025 20:41

5 going on 6!! What does it matter you are mum to your child not 42 year old mum. Ages will be very mixed and will be so all through your childs life. Stop worrying , be you and enjoy it as it comes.... soon be Yr 2etc.

littlemissalwaystired · 11/12/2025 20:42

I’ll be 34 when mine starts year 1😊

Sartre · 11/12/2025 20:44

32 and I can confidently say I am one of the youngest. I can pinpoint perhaps three other parents I would gather are a similar age to me but the rest are easily at least a decade older.

Globules · 11/12/2025 20:48

33 with DS.

I felt old in my area.

Misswright88 · 11/12/2025 20:53

I’m 37. I think I’m one of the younger year one mums

BakewellGin1 · 11/12/2025 20:54

Well with my eldest I was 27 and my youngest 40

Parents seem to be anywhere from age 23ish to 47ish

KeenGreen · 11/12/2025 20:56

Almost 40, one child.

Quite a few in DS Class similar age or older

Tiedbutchorestodo · 11/12/2025 20:57

I was 35 with my eldest (and one of the youngest mums in her class) and 42 with my youngest (on the older side of average for her class)

Bringemout · 11/12/2025 20:58

43

Gormless · 11/12/2025 21:04

50!

isargosaword · 11/12/2025 21:11

I was 26 and the youngest/one of the youngest!

There was a really mix of ages. Plenty in their 30s and 40s. Also for some it was their first child, whereas a few had older secondary age or teenagers already from first marriage etc.

Some of the parents I got along with best were fifteen years plus older than me so I don’t think it matters.

Also there were some parents I have no idea exactly how old they were, it can be hard to tell exactly if you’ve not been told.

cadburyegg · 11/12/2025 21:13

Mine are y6 and y3 now but when they were y1 I was 33/36

Mere1 · 11/12/2025 21:13

My daughters are 43 and both have reception class children.

YourZippyHare · 11/12/2025 21:22

31 with my eldest, 33 with my second. Will be 43 with my third.

freakingscared · 11/12/2025 21:33

When my firsts rated I was 24 my middle child was I was 39 and when my youngest daughter starts I will be 44 and when my baby ( currently cooking ) , starts school I will be 49 .
🤷🏻‍♀️

Lolalovesroses · 11/12/2025 21:52

I’d say most of the mums in year 1 are 40+ at my sons school.

LemaxObsessive · 11/12/2025 19:58

There is an element of choice though. I had a surprise pregnancy despite taking precautions. And due to my health it was a big decision but unless I was past the legal cut off, if I needed to then, a decision would’ve been made and precautions changed. But I don’t want to derail the thread!

@LemaxObsessive

I'm not sure i understand your point. Are you saying you'd have preferred if your parents had aborted you rather than had you late because that would have been less selfish? I am not sure i agree with that (and im not criticising abortions. I had 2 myself).

Anyway I get that you are upset that you lost your parents young. That must have been very hard. However lashing out at other mums who are honest enough to share something pretty personal about them is quite nasty especially considering that there isn't much they can do about that now. It might be better if you start your own thread to talk about the difficulty of losing your parents when you were young.

Anyway I was 42 when dc1 was in year 1 and felt absolutely ancient. Her best friend's mum was only 30 and she kept saying she was an older mum. When dc2 is in year 1 I will be 47.

(And yes I do feel guilty for being an older mum but no i dont regret having my kids and I don't wish I had aborted them. I hope they will never wish that either. )

HappyHen17 · 11/12/2025 22:10

I’m 48 with a year one and a year three, maybe older than most but I’m not worried, just delighted I got to be a mum.
