A brand new, new build house. Mortgaged.
Two brand new cars.
They don’t dress designer but the present well.
She has a few designer handbags.
gadgets are always good brands, latest I phones, shark hairdryers, robot hoover.
very organised and tidy home, both work full time in good jobs.
They do family outings every few weekends but not every weekend.
Honesty, what are your first thoughts?!

OP, re your family making weird remarks about your income, did you grow up in a low income household? If so I guess your lifestyle/spending habits might seem pretty plush?

My dad was an outlier in his family in that he finished school and bought a semi detached house in a suburb of our capital city. His siblings were in and out of unskilled work and acted like he was a rockstar.

All you've described sounds completely unremarkable to me and I'm from a fairly average background per above.

Cherricherri · 09/12/2025 22:33

sounds normal?

pinkstripeycat · 09/12/2025 22:35

Wouldn’t notice

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/12/2025 22:36

Normal, but boring.

Cherricherri · 09/12/2025 22:37

beefthief · 09/12/2025 11:46

This seems entirely normal unless you're going to drip feed that it's actually Fred and Rose West

Haha I assume this is someone seething with envy someone has a better phone/handbag than them. The husband simply MUST sell crack and heroin

LifeSurvior · 09/12/2025 22:40

OP
"I try not to talk about money tbh."

Proceeds to start a thread encouraging peeps to talk about her money.

I'm dying😂😂😂

Kindly, I'd hardly say 2k savings a month is ample. Are you able to retrain to earn more? Take in ironing? Odd jobs? Dog walking? Anything to get those savings pumped up into a more acceptable and actual ample amount.

Is this a joke?! I save £100 / month!

“Gosh, I’ve been a lot more observant than usual.”

Ha! This made me snort, it sums up my entire existence.

anon4net · 09/12/2025 22:50

I honestly would have no thoughts. Literally blank mind about it and no that's not my perimenopause talking.

What are we supposed to think?

Spooky2000 · 09/12/2025 22:51

Drug dealers. That's what I'd think, if it was in a place where it was either more unusual, or they didn't have incomes to afford this kind of lifestyle. Or a lotto win, if I was feeling kind 😁

SoLongMae · 09/12/2025 22:56

DoubleHardBastard · 09/12/2025 15:38

You're earning 130k as a couple and they think you've won the lottery? Are they rich, OP?

When they gave you the head tilt, you should have said "maybe" followed by a tinkly laugh and your very own head tilt.

Seriously though, I'd be saving more and spending less. It's not a very large joint income and hard times can fall on anyone at anytime.

Only on MN would a joint income of that be seen in a negative way.

Lyraloo · 09/12/2025 22:56

Don’t be silly, you have absolutely no need to take on further work, ignore the idiot that suggested that, they are clearly trying to be clever and pretend they have more money then you!

babyproblems · 09/12/2025 22:59

I’d think quite boring and probably poor taste / new money. Sorry if that’s judgey!!! There’s zero character in any of it.

Bonsaibaby · 09/12/2025 23:00

It’s funny how many comments there are on here trying to pull you down in different ways- shows how right you are! Sounds like you have a great life which you are grateful for which is brilliant.

localnotail · 09/12/2025 23:03

Nothing. All seems quite normal and pretty boring.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/12/2025 23:04

I wouldn’t notice 🤷‍♀️

Newsenmum · 09/12/2025 19:57

Middle class but probably have debt whilst trying to ‘keep up’. Do cocaine on weekends.

Because she’s got a shark hairdryer she does coke? Must rethink my haircare choices in case people think I’m on the gear 🤣

Pusstachio · 09/12/2025 23:09

Slightly basic tastes. But I’m sure they’re lovely ppl

joyfulcandle · 09/12/2025 23:14

I haven’t read all the responses but what is all the carping about 130k being a below par household income?! People’s circs are different. A family could have a huge mortgage, or inherited money, or be putting the new car on a credit card or whatever! Who knows? Who cares?!

GirlOfTudor · 09/12/2025 23:15

That they have comfortable salaries and have help to keep the house clean and tidy.

OnLockdown · 09/12/2025 23:16

I imagine their house decor to be grey or beige.

Maybe she could sell some stuff on eBay?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 09/12/2025 23:21

I think I would imagine grey decor, lower middle class. Possibly aspiring working class.

i nearly choked on my tea!!

LonelySeahorses · 09/12/2025 23:33

I probably wouldnt look twice tbh.
However if pushed for answer I'd probably say that we don't know the details of their finances. I've known people inherit enough for a decent deposit then with investments end up with a good standard of living.
Ex bro in law became fairly rich with his wife as MIL looked after the kids every day. This saved a huge amount on childcare and neither had to work part time or take career breaks- both climbed the coperate ladder. I guess this made a difference to their wealth as they never seemed to struggle.

Cars can look flash but actually just be rentals...handbags..Vinted??
Plenty of rich fRmers in my rural local wearing wellies n old macs...they dont LOOK flash but own a lot of land, Range rovers ( new)

I guess its difficult to judge just by looks. Lots of people have expensive style and dress well/ choose lavish looking stuff?

If you hadnt have asked, i probably wouldnt notice
