NC’d for this

A couple. 2 dc (no childcare)
A brand new, new build house. Mortgaged.
Two brand new cars.
They don’t dress designer but the present well.
She has a few designer handbags.
gadgets are always good brands, latest I phones, shark hairdryers, robot hoover.
very organised and tidy home, both work full time in good jobs.
They do family outings every few weekends but not every weekend.
Honesty, what are your first thoughts?!

OP posts:
Newsenmum · 09/12/2025 19:57

Middle class but probably have debt whilst trying to ‘keep up’. Do cocaine on weekends.

FunnyOrca · 09/12/2025 19:57

“Gosh, I’ve been a lot more observant than usual.”

Calliopespa · 09/12/2025 19:57

WC values and tastes, moved up financially.

Ireolu · 09/12/2025 19:58

Our neighbours looked incredibly pissed when our new car turned up in April. DH was told 'well we know where all the wealth is going'. Salary sacrifice car worth 80k +. DH was so taken aback he did not respond. Its not even a car we are keeping! It's clear it isn't as we had the last one for 3 yrs.

Some people are just weird. To be jealous of a neighbour is just plain weird. I haven't bothered engaging with them for years. This episode helped cement that non engagement. A hello but not much else. Enjoy your new car OP.8

I have the shark hair dryer that folds it's great.

Lavender14 · 09/12/2025 20:01

If I saw that I'd probably think they must be in two good jobs to afford that lifestyle and then I'd think no more about it.

Zov · 09/12/2025 20:04

I haven't read anything but the first post... @gemful

Honestly......

I think this sounds like a couple who are trying to be something they're not.

Working class, trying to present as middle class and wealthy. Very likely deeply in debt, and mortgaged to the eyeballs. Very little (or no) savings.

The middle class people I know have old-ish cars, and no designer handbags, and they don't need or want the latest iphones, and name brand tech. And they usually have an old (more than 100 years old) house. Sometimes inherited, sometimes not. Often mortgage free by 40-ish.

This couple wants to be middle class/posh, but they're giving Hyacinth Bouquet vibes.

cotswoldsgal1234 · 09/12/2025 20:05

Wouldn’t enter my thoughts. Obviously work hard and enjoy some nice things and a hassle free house!

You do realise you sound far more invested in class than the couple being described, which is just cringe. Not everyone with that lifestyle is heavily in debt, they just have different tastes.

Kindly, I'd hardly say 2k savings a month is ample. Are you able to retrain to earn more? Take in ironing? Odd jobs? Dog walking? Anything to get those savings pumped up into a more acceptable and actual ample amount.

Eh?
Some people dont even earn 2k a month never mind manager to save 2k a month. Jeez

This notion that rich people aren't flash is ridiculous. All you need to do is look on the purse forum to see rich flash people. Multiple birkins/cartier and VCA pieces posted along side super cars.

People can afford what they can afford. How they chose to spend their money is up to them. Whether or not you or anyone else approves this as truly wealthy is by the by.

sHREDDIES19 · 09/12/2025 20:17

Such odd neighbours but might be fun to try and irritate them more with your next upgrades and purchases🤣 Why are they so invested? Must be jealousy as most normal people wouldn’t care. Some of the comments on this post are reeking of jealousy with the “oh is that all you earn”, or “must be working class in debt up to their eyeballs”. Cringe!! And the judgement and scorn on new builds too. Some of y’all are weird.

HamAndMustardAndCranberrySauce · 09/12/2025 20:18

I'd be wondering what you do for a living and whether I could subtly find out so I could think about a career move that would give me more income! I hate blood, though, so don't tell me if you're doctors.

Because I'm a single parent with two teens and I always wonder what other people do that means they can afford things I can't.

I would never in a million years comment on someone else's apparent wealth (or lack thereof), because it's rude.

I never said that RICH people aren't flash. I said middle class people - actual genuine middle class/upper middle class people aren't. They don't need to be as they have got nothing to prove.

It's the wannabes who are desperate to prove they are 'considerably richer than YOU' who are the ones who present as 'flash,' and spend spend spend to try and make out they're something they're not. Often getting wildly into debt, to get as much flash shit they can get, because they think people will be impressed.

You sound annoyed. Did I hit a raw nerve?

Dear god some pp are really laying into OP. i wouldn't think anything but now you have asked I think, good for them. Spend your money how you like and enjoy your life. I've never once judged anyone for what car they own.

starrynight009 · 09/12/2025 20:23

I'm not impressed by designer handbags, iPhones, new cars and I don't know even know what a shark hairdryer is. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of new builds either. So none of that would matter much to me. Are they kind people and happy? Those are the things which matter.
