I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

It does look creepy but could the PP be right about it being a podcaster or Youtuber? They always seem to have a specific section of their house that the film in.

Could it be an audition room? You know like a self audition space for an actor? This is my positive spin on it and what I would have to continually tell myself to carry on living in the house 😬

Yes, like Hugh Grant in Paddington. Phew, not at all creepy, …. Oh wait!

Im going with teenager’s den, and they proudly hung the wallpaper all by themselves with blue tack.

Rightsraptor · 07/12/2025 07:13

Someone said about it not being dusty. I got the Christmas decs down from my attic and was surprised at how clean they were & I have just a bog standard roof with felt up above them. Most dust is human skin etc anyway, so if it were dusty in an attic it might indicate human presence.

bozzabollix · 07/12/2025 07:31

I’ve got a friend who had three boys very close together. It was literally a tornado of questions, requests, complaints and arguments. She used to use the utility to go and scream in. This room would’ve been the answer to her prayers. It’s an escape to room.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2025 07:32

Is it sound proofed ? A lock on inside or outside @Ohwhatswrong

go in and shut door and scream

how big is it @Ohwhatswrong

Why have you enabled voting?

You are not being unreasonable to have found a secret room in your house?

Seriously, this is what you take from this post....? Anything interesting or insightful to add or do you just enjoy nit picking?

DramaQueenlady · 07/12/2025 07:35

Looks like a bit of the attic that's been floored and lined then papered. Prob no window, open it back up if it creeps you out! Prob a hidden mum space no kids allowed! 😂

Frumpitydoo · 07/12/2025 07:35

Eew! Very off vibes.

JustMyView13 · 07/12/2025 07:38

I’d take the wallpaper off, take the carpet up, board it out and have all your Christmas decs stored nicely. The chair is positioned in this way because the previous owner was a wind up.

A blacklight would show a different perspective.

ParmaVioletTea · 07/12/2025 07:57

Looks quite a normal bodge job. It’s not secret - just badly done and probably illegal (no proper building inspection) therefore not featured. But you must have been incredibly lax when viewing and inspecting the house not to notice it. Or a bad surveyor who didn’t see it.

But I suppose you want to get a thread into Classics.

One of my recurrent dreams is finding a secret room in a new place - attic, extension, cellar ...

Me too. And oddly the room in OP's house looks slightly familiar, but it's probably the decor era.

I just googled Mr Tumble and I don't get the reference 😂

Maybe someone in the house used to go up there and meditate and get away from any other noise?

.....but did you google him three times?

My friend found similar in her house. It had a huge attic. All boarded out, but at the back, behind all the water tanks and undecorated areas was a room similar to the OP’s. They never did find out what it was for. The house already had a servant’s room on the main floor with a buzzer that you could press from all the other rooms (same in the kitchen), so it’s not like it was a servant’s quarter. And the loft was accessed by a ladder, not stairs. Very strange.

Where I live, some houses have a (former) maid's room, accessed by staircase from the kitchen. If you were never planning to use it, I guess you might remove the staircase to male the kitchen bigger?

PInkyStarfish · 07/12/2025 08:06

The husband from the previous owners was married to an old Nag and he used to go up there for some peace and quiet and to read his fishing magazines without his wife bending his ear about anything.

Alondra · 07/12/2025 08:06

Looks like a lovely loft room that could have been used as multipurpose.

What I don't get is how you purchased a house without looking the certificate of title plan. This room is not small and shouldn't be "hidden and secret" when you purchased your house.

Secret torture room. The torture being looking at how that wallpaper has been hung.

😂wallpaper is like mouldy cheese

You don't go into the attic with a fine toothcomb when you're viewing, and neither does a surveyor (unless it's a structural survey). The most you do is open the hatch, stick your head up into the space and look for daylight coming in.

Ours is full of enormous spider webs and torching falling off the tiles, I keep a length of copper pipe by the hatch to twirl the webs round so one doesn't walk into them, or get them in your hair (more likely). It's so gross.

The old Nag should have locked the useless twat in there then.

I quite like it. The decor isn't great obviously but well lit. I would quite like a space like this to get away from everyone. Just sit and have some me time

Yes. Redecorate it more tastefully, nice wallpaper & carpet, ditch the chair. Maybe put in one of those full length lounger bean bags - they had them by the pool at our holiday place, super comfortable, and use it as your personal relaxation/reading room.

Jk987 · 07/12/2025 08:23

The kids will absolutely love that room when they’re a bit older!

Thistlesg · 07/12/2025 08:25

It’s giving ‘I need some peace and quiet’ vibes to me. Looks quite feminine, add a bookcase filled with books and it would be a cosy reading nook

NewHouseNewMe · 07/12/2025 08:25

Is it a house like this?

The front attic bit is low in height but I’ve seen a few houses where people have boarded them out as a play area for kids. The fact that it’s in the attic seems part of the fun!

Different times of course!
