I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

Me too! And the attic is always absolutely terrifying and I'm too scared to look at it. Apparently it's about an unexplored part of your psyche but frankly some of my dreams are enough to put me off exploring my psyche any further thank you very much.

In this case, I think it just looks like an old school, bodge job, teenagers gaming den.

I thought it was about s simple longing for a bigger house: Oh hey, look, we’ve got this enormous gorgeous room too. That’s how my dreams are.

The previous owners were Mastermind fanatics. This was where they trained, the plan being to get used to distractions so that when they were in the black chair with the lights dimmed they would be laser focused.

Of course! Best suggestion so far!

ChessieFL · 07/12/2025 08:33

I think the book people are thinking of is The Dream Home by T M Logan.

landlordhell · 07/12/2025 08:35

It’s not creepy at all. BGreat storage area

Sorry
We moved in in November. Been in and out the loft, husband didn't notice it and then the sky engineer came and he found it.
Has a few bits boarded, looks like a normal loft. We didn't even see it and we had been up there a good few times with unpacking.

You say the rest of the loft has a few bits boarded. Does it also have wallpaper and proper spot lights like the hidden room?

It's giving fucked up Mr tumble vibes. It even has green skirting boards. And why is the chair in there like that? It's weird and I wish we hadn't found it tbh.

It doesn't say anything odd to me at all. It's either a spare chair they had no 'home for' or it's a place someone went to chill out and have some P&Q.

Someone living there made a den for themselves. It's not a room, it's a loft where they have papered the walls and stuck a carpet and chair there.

Did you not have the loft inspected as part of a survey before you bought the house? (You should- for leaks and damp etc.)

Does it have a door to enclose it from the rest of the loft?

4forksache · 07/12/2025 08:42

why wouldn’t they have cut the overhang off of the wallpaper at the top left?

Shine a UV light over all the surfaces and see what shows up...

This! I think it was some blokes secret wank room

Acalmintent · 07/12/2025 08:44

When you say “hidden in the back of the loft”… was there a door to it?

LotzofLurve · 07/12/2025 08:45

Bloody big effort to get a loft ladder down, climb up it and sit in that chair.

Calm yourself! 😂

I literally just finished reading a book where a family moves into a new house, and the husband finds a secret room. There's an old armchair, a Welsh dresser, etc. in the room. And a bunch of momentos (glasses, wallet, watch, dog collar, etc) inside the dresser, kept by a serial killer, from the victims, who now wants the stuff back!

What book is this please? Sounds like one I'd like!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/12/2025 08:56

Oooh it’s really creepy.
need OP to come back - so many questions!

LlynTegid · 07/12/2025 09:02

How was this not found out during the survey or other information before you bought the house?

Or by the husband who has been up to the loft multiple times but apparently missed it

Ah, The Dream Home by TM Logan!

Exactly.

A couple I knew pulled out of a house purchase because of issues with the loft/structural / etc that was only found during a survey. They lost a lot of money paying for the survey but a fraction of repairing the issue.

Cherrysoup · 07/12/2025 09:13

Is that a (green frame) Velux? If so, it’s pretty obvious from the outside.

Is there another exit? Just echoing what a pp said re the space belonging to the neighbour.

CasperGutman · 07/12/2025 09:15

Disappointingly this was almost certainly used for something really dull. I'm thinking a model railway layout. Obviously they took that with them when they moved out, as it was their absolute pride and joy. They left the chair because it's horrible. It just looks odd now the whole reason for the room's existence has gone.

rainbowunicorn22 · 07/12/2025 09:16

looks like Mastermind perhaps they liked to re enact that show?

Lovelanza · 07/12/2025 09:20

I was thinking of this book too! I can't remember what it was called.

It’s called The Dream House by T M Logan. Had the same thought as soon as I read the OP. I can remember who the serial killer was but don’t want to spoil it for anyone!

WonderfulSmith · 07/12/2025 09:20

I knew someone who discovered an entire extra floor in a flat they moved into. They moved a wardrobe and there was a set of stairs going up to the next floor! This was in a row of big seaside townhouses, and they were renting, so hadn’t really questioned there being a floor above them.

It does make you ask why people never have full surveys.
