Do people not realise that for those who welcome them into the family they are part of the family. And if you have a dog and say it's just a dog, I'm not sure you should have one.

This about that bloody labrador not invited for Christmas lunch?

That made me laugh @80smonster😆 I had this sudden vision of the dog at the table wearing a Christmas hat. Mind you …

This about that bloody labrador not invited for Christmas lunch? The owner hadn’t checked with the hosts and when her partner did, it was a no. I don’t get offended when an invite is adult only, if you can tell someone ‘no kids’ you can definitely say ‘no dogs’. If you have a special request it’s polite to make it known to your host at your earliest convenience. Assuming this post is in relation to the above, it’s about manners not dogs.

DLab, please 😘

There’s no vitriol there.
Its just a statement that you don’t like, and have chosen to throw yourself about over.
Everyone tells on themselves eventually.
I did it upfront. You took your time.

🤣🤦‍♂️

Nice try.

Dogs seem to be the new thing to get hysterical about on MN. The key point in the thread this one refers to is that that OP's boyfriend lied about asking his parents' about the dog and only told her now, 2 weeks before Christmas that it couldn't come. The boyfriend lying was the salient point that passed a huge number of posters by. If it had been anything but a dog, posters would have sympathised with her, but because it is a dog, it brought out those who just want to say negative things about dogs and will shoehorn them in wherever they can.

Thanks for explaining this! @sonjadog
The problem was the lying person. Something we can all agree on, surely? Whether you like dogs or not..?

But maybe if everyone raised their children to think that all animals are equal, people would be more concerned about the destruction of their environments. Ultimately, our children are very likely going to suffer precisely because humans think they can do whatever they like with no consequences.

Why is there never any nuance in these threads? How can anyone just think "Humans are more important and that's that" without any thought or consideration? We're the most destructive animal on the planet.

But all animals AREN'T equal, are they? Where are the courts full of cats on remand for killing mice and birds?

labamba18 · 06/12/2025 11:52

You would choose your dog over the life of another human? I can’t wrap my head around this at all? And I absolutely adore dogs!

I’d choose my beloved animal over a human yes.

Onleemoi · 06/12/2025 16:13

It’s not something I’d considered previously but this thread has definitely made me think. I’d choose dogs, every time.

I agree. I don't think I would find any common ground with those whose view is "it's just a dog".

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/12/2025 16:23

Fine to say 'it's just a dog' if it's ok for me to say 'it's just a child'.

I have dogs because I like dogs. I don't have children for a variety of reasons, including that I cannot have children but that's by the by as I don't particularly like children and do not want any.

To me, your child is 'just a child'. I am not interested, do not want them in my house, and find the very young ones to be fairly revolting (producing snot, piss, shit and vomit without much warning) and a very real risk to my health (little disease vectors that they are, never mind the parasites!).

Or we could accept that family is family, my family is important to me, but not to you. Your family is important to you but not to me, and be just that bit more thoughtful of others feelings?

LiftAndCoast · 06/12/2025 16:26

I hope the people arguing that animals are equal to humans never eat meat. By their logic it would be morally equivalent to cannibalism.

Onleemoi · 06/12/2025 16:28

I hope the people that proclaim to care about children so much have fostered or adopted.

I haven't eaten meat for about the last 45 years.

Imagine banging on about saving children from a hypothetical situation but choosing not to save them from a real one.

Well no because end of the day no matter how much you hate children and love dogs, children are humans who will grow up and many of them will contribute in wonderful and interesting ways to life on this planet and your dogs will...go for a lot of walks and get belly rubs. They're just dogs. They're never going to be anything but dogs.

No I haven't adopted or fostered, but I do think that human life is of more value than animal life. Sorry but I'm not really sure of the correlation between the two things, but I daresay that you know there isn't one.

Don't speak too soon, according to some on this thread their dogs could perform heart surgery and do CPR and so on.

My dog saved my life. I live with MH illness, and she has been the reason I have accepted treatment when in hospital so I can get back home to her.

I hope the people arguing that animals are equal to humans never eat meat. By their logic it would be morally equivalent to cannibalism.

I hope the people arguing that the lives of random humans should always be placed above family dogs would risk their lives to save Huntley, West, Putin, Hitler, Bundy, Dahmer, Gein, Brady, Hindley, Shipman, McCann, Sinaga and all involved with trafficking women and children for the cartels from a house fire.

See how stupid ill-considered straw mans can be? Regardless of how pious you feel when posting them.

My dog isn't stinky or dirty ass. She's beautiful.

She's my emotional support.

But the fact remains that all dogs (fucking) stink. I have nothing further to add on that.

Where are the parents?

Who would you save in a similar situation - your very elderly grandmother, or a stranger's baby?
