I was reading something about midsize fashion yesterday at lunch, mentioned it to a friend and said about how I struggle to find things that fit well and suit me (I’m a pear shape 5’10 and 9.5-10 stone my weight fluctuates within the size I wear depending on time of month etc- size 10) and she had a go at me ! Said that I’m too thin and calling myself midsize is not ok ?

But I’m very disproportionate and feel heavy ? Midsize clothing ideas suit me. She was then saying maybe I even have an eating disorder if I see myself that way.
Surely this is fine for me to see myself as midsize due to my shape/proportions and what suits me ? She was actually fuming though

Because you're not fat or midsized.
You're tall and thin.
You have dysmorphia and you should seek help.

For example - I'm 5' 3" and I weigh 11st 10lb. I am in size 12 jeans and size 8 - 10 jumpers.

Your BMI is 18. Mine is 29.

The difference between us is that I'm happy with how I look. I'm proud of myself. This time two years ago I weighed over 20st and my BMI was more than 50.

Stop talking nonsense about your size. You're annoying your friend and most of this thread by being disingenuous.

I got the sense that she used it as a neutral descriptor, rather than as a loaded term.

I would also say she’s midsize, based on her hips 🤷🏻‍♀️

FairKoala · 05/12/2025 15:24

I think you can have a BMI and be pear shaped. Equally I can see why someone that tall and slim thinks themselves mid sized

I ask people to go and look at a rack of trousers and look for those that are the longest length and then have a look at the size
I can guarantee they aren’t a size 6 or 8

If you are tall then you have to wear the higher sizes otherwise you can’t get the length

The fashion industry thinks size 8 = 5ft 4” tall at the most

I am 5.10 and have always been slim. When I was 26 I developed hyperthyroidism and started loosing weight like nobody´s business. I went to a size 10 and looked like a stick insect. That and other symptoms took me to the doctors. My best friend who hadn´t seen me in a while was shocked and told e later she wanted to speak to my mum, as she thought I was anorexic. I wasn´t middle sized then. You have model measurements and bmi, you aren´t middle sized.

YankSplaining · 05/12/2025 15:32

I’m on the lower end of midsize. I’m four inches shorter and around 35 lb heavier than you. YABU.

I can sympathize with having a body you feel isn’t “properly” proportioned, though. Before I had kids, my waist and my hips were two different clothing sizes, and finding jeans that fit was difficult. Use whatever style tips work for you, but you’re not midsize.

Models don't have 40-inch hips.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 05/12/2025 15:39

I mean, i tend to watch vlogs on midsize fashion as i like the style more.

I'm 5ft 3in and a size 10, but I have quite a soft, round belly from having 3 kids in quick succession and not losing the weight for years!! (I've lost it now but its left things loose).

Even so, I wouldnt say I am mid-size, I just prefer the style that "mid-size" influences show.

Im puzzled - if your hips measure 40 how can you wear size 10 trousers, which you say you do?

I wear stretchy trousers / leggings in a 10. If I size up to accommodate hips they are really baggy in legs

Maybe it would be worth while having a look at Lipodema if you are very slim on your top half and the weight is on your legs?

Just an idea and maybe someone will find this useful.

Yes - good point - maybe worth thinking about.

Haven’t you got anything better to think about and talk about except numbers on a scale?

You know that was a stupid response but I'll spell it out anyway: OP didn't say this was the only conversation she's ever had with her friend.

I probably voted the same way as you, but you totally undermine your stance with this childish nonsense.

Hardly stupid or childish- extensive experience of eating disorders and I am so sick and tired of weight/height/midsize/plus size/skinny/ skinnyfat/pear shaped/ apple shaped bullshit bullshit bullshit! It would be wonderful if women could just allow themselves and others to just BE

I totally agree with you and I'm sorry you've had those issues, but to clarify, it's the "haven't you got anything better to think about" that diminishes your point. That's the childish bit.

It may sound flippant and even rude but there is a whole world out there beyond weight/shape/sizing/fat/thin etc and I just wish women’s thinking could not be so dominated by food and shape, that’s all. The world is being run by disastrous men and women are angering over calories and dress sizes.

SleeplessInWherever · 07/12/2025 22:09

Tell you what, if you can describe your body however you want - I’m gonna start calling my size 20 wobbly body midsize too.

It’s my body and I’ll pretend it’s smaller if I want to!
