I was reading something about midsize fashion yesterday at lunch, mentioned it to a friend and said about how I struggle to find things that fit well and suit me (I’m a pear shape 5’10 and 9.5-10 stone my weight fluctuates within the size I wear depending on time of month etc- size 10) and she had a go at me ! Said that I’m too thin and calling myself midsize is not ok ?

But I’m very disproportionate and feel heavy ? Midsize clothing ideas suit me. She was then saying maybe I even have an eating disorder if I see myself that way.
Surely this is fine for me to see myself as midsize due to my shape/proportions and what suits me ? She was actually fuming though

Your BMI is around 19 and at your height I’d imagine you look slim to everyone but yourself. I’m your height and a couple of stone heavier and people describe me as mid size so you’ve probably got a habit of seeing yourself a way that others don’t. However this makes no difference as you choose what clothes and styles suit you. And she shouldn’t be going on about it. Unless you’re the slimmest person complaining about your body. I have a slim friend saying she looks awful with all the weight she’s carrying and I just said well that’s you telling the rest of us we look terrible as we are all heavier… but tbh it’s boring to be around women of any size who moan about their bodies. I know I need to get a few pounds off but nobody wants to hear that convo so it’s between me & the fridge 😜

Does it really matter that much

Well at 5'10" and 9.5st your BMI is about 18, so the lower end of the scale. So no, you're not mid sized. Finding clothes that fit your body shape does not equate to being midsize, even if that style suits you.

This. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in but you are slim not midsize.

User1606042727 · 05/12/2025 13:36

You're not midsized. I think that you are confusing body shape with body size.

I am 5 ft 5 in and weigh about 8 st 4lb. Im pear shaped because my top is a size 6 and my bottom is a size 10. I'm a pear but a very small pear, I look best in clothes that pear shaped women look good in but I buy them in very small sizes. I have no eating issues - I'm just this size and shape and pretty much always have been.

A medium is a 10-12.
A small is a 8-10
A large is a 12-14
Extra small 6 to 8
And so on. You are small to medium by your own acknowledgement in the size you wear.
She is being ridiculous to have a go at you because it is none or her business there is nothing to address in this matter.

Disagree.

Medium these days is 14-16.
Large is 18+
NO WAY is a size 12 large!

Small is 10-12
Extra small 6-8

TheIceBear · 05/12/2025 13:51

Why do people even have to give their body a label such as “midsized “ it’s so stupid. I’d never even heard the term until I started seeing stupid videos on instagram about it. Just wear whatever clothes you want. Ridiculous

MinnieMountain · 05/12/2025 13:57

I’m 5ft 10 and an apple shape. My preferred weight is 9st 10 as otherwise my stomach sticks out, so it varies a bit depending on how much willpower I have to reduce the carbs I eat and not have anything sweet.

I describe myself as slim. Definitely not midsized.

LavenderBlue19 · 05/12/2025 14:02

Mid-sized is just a hashtag descriptor used on social media to identify people who aren't very slim, but are also not plus size. Mainly because plus size fashion has been a thing for many years now, and 'normal' fashion is very much aimed at the slim/skinny, but if you're a 12/14/16ish you don't quite fit or suit either. It's just handy for finding someone a similar size and build to you.

If you're a heavy pear shape then you'll perhaps identify with mid-size fashion for your lower half, but your top half is more suited to 'normal' fashion. You're lucky though, a pear shape is much easier to dress than an apple shape. If you're feeling uncomfortable with how you dress, why not look up tips for pear-shaped fashion and give them a try? I know a woman who is very slim but with very wide hips, and she embraces it - she's usually in gym wear or very slim-fitting clothes, and yes she looks quite unusual, but that's just her body.

Apricotafternoon · 05/12/2025 14:04

Personally my thought on all this stuff is that these are just numbers in your clothes. Who cares what size clothes you wear or others. As long you feel happy and healthy it doesn't matter. I don't understand why so many people are so concerned over these little details in life.

AgnesMcDoo · 05/12/2025 14:12

you might feel heavy but you are not midsized.

babyproblems · 05/12/2025 14:13

You’re not mid size. Mid size is a 14 I’d say. That’s not you is it because you’re a 10/12!
anyway ‘mid size’ is a rubbish faddy term that means F all.

Beeloux · 05/12/2025 14:14

I’m 5”8 and go between 8.5 and 9 stone. I’m an inverted V shape with skinny hips and legs, a size 8 on the bottom. I have a very broad back and shoulders so I take a 36C cup and a size 12 on top.

I get what you mean about it being difficult to find clothes that fit. I used to be very skinny (size uk4 bottom) and I’ve never been less than a 32 bra band.

Oh, so you're massive.

Go away with your stealth boasting.
Hmm

It’s definitely not stealth boasting - I have nothing to boast about I’m just adding the info for context. Like height and weight. I was only trying to have a lighthearted chat about clothes and fashion with someone I thought was a friend and I was confused by their reaction

Yes I think you’re right I think my mistake has been watching / reading about midsize fashion and finding it suits me best then applying that to myself as i definitely don’t look like my weight (especially in summer clothes that is the part of year I dread so glad we are in the cold weather now !)

See what I mean, lots of people with different opinions of what’s midsize. You’ll never be right because it’s all subjective. You just do
you; lots of fabulous content creators online who class themselves as midsize and are in a size 10-14, some great fashion ideas for us in that bracket.

I like loose midi-length dresses in summer. They skim your hips and arse. Hush are good for this silhouette. You can go sleeveless or short-sleeved if you want to show your slim arms, and wear ones that are fitted round the waist/torso or have a belt or tie to emphasise your waist.

Rivertrudge · 05/12/2025 14:32

Im puzzled - if your hips measure 40 how can you wear size 10 trousers, which you say you do?

Shedeboodinia · 05/12/2025 14:33

Im 3 stone heavier and 4 inches shorter and i am midsize. I am average height and average dress size for a uk woman.
With your dimensions you must be comparibly tall and slim against the average woman.
How you feel about it is another matter. But if you are discussing your heught and weight with others then think about the average size and weight or it won't make sense to them.
Of course you can categorise yourself however you like though!

Because you're not fat or midsized.
You're tall and thin.
You have dysmorphia and you should seek help.

For example - I'm 5' 3" and I weigh 11st 10lb. I am in size 12 jeans and size 8 - 10 jumpers.

Your BMI is 18. Mine is 29.

The difference between us is that I'm happy with how I look. I'm proud of myself. This time two years ago I weighed over 20st and my BMI was more than 50.

Stop talking nonsense about your size. You're annoying your friend and most of this thread by being disingenuous.

Shedeboodinia · 05/12/2025 14:36

Google tells us
The average size for a UK woman is a dress size 16, which is a significant increase from the size 12 that was considered average in 1957. The average height has also increased to 5ft 5in, while the average weight is now 11 stone, compared to the 9 stone 10lbs from 60 years ago.

  • Dress size: UK size 16
  • Height: 5ft 5in
  • Weight: 11 stone
  • Shoe size: 6
  • Waist: 34 inches
  • Bra size: 36DD

Put simply, who gives a shit what your height and weight is except you and your doctor?

Your poor friend having to listen to this myopic drivel. Haven’t you got anything better to think about and talk about except numbers on a scale?

Haven’t you got anything better to think about and talk about except numbers on a scale?

You know that was a stupid response but I'll spell it out anyway: OP didn't say this was the only conversation she's ever had with her friend.

I probably voted the same way as you, but you totally undermine your stance with this childish nonsense.

Winterjoy · 05/12/2025 14:40

The descriptions you've given do sound like there could be potential for lipedema here - a look of two different bodies put together, very bad 'cellulite', 40" hips vs 25 waist, and so on. Something to look into if you think it's a possibility.although not 'curable' it may help you psychologically if you know the 'reason' for the shape. Also I believe there are some lifestyle actions you can take as prevention for worsening/pain (compression leggings etc.)

I’m tall (5’11’’) and midi dresses make me look really frumpy! I can get away with them in winter with fancy boots — but can’t wear them at all in the summer. (Ditto midi skirts.) I wear maxi dresses though, or wide leg trousers, and find both work well.

OP, you don’t sound mid-size to me but there’s no reason you can’t follow mid-size tips if they work for you!

Somethingneedstochange78 · 05/12/2025 14:57

Wouldn’t it be so much simpler if we could choose our body shape. But we can’t and height, lifestyle, genetics and our health issues all affect our bodies.

Maybe I just don't care about looking frumpy! but I think I look quite nice in them. I bet you do too really. I like the kind with a loose or tiered skirt and a fairly utilitarian shirt-dress-style bodice with sleeves and a collar, so I don't look like I'm on holiday or trying to look glam.
