To think it is not at all sad that the Women's Institute is now only for actual women?

“Incredibly sadly, we will have to restrict our membership on the basis of biological sex from April next year,” Green said. “But the message we really want to get across is that it remains our firm belief that transgender women are women, and that doesn’t change.”

Tellingly - they still think women can have a penis.

Women’s Institute will no longer accept trans women as members from April

It is quite funny reading about bullying when we all know the only thing that's stopping some of our recent contributors from pulling that off is lack of power and ability.

Very difficult seeing as I have hidden the feminist section as I don't want to see that toxicity and vitriol and then the poster posts in a section used by others trying to avoid it

Its not difficult at all, most posters seem to find it quite sasy not to go on threads they are interested in

masses of politics, relationships Christmas etc on aibu and not corralled away

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 08/12/2025 18:24

not interested…doh!

If I’m walking down the street and I become aware of someone walking behind me I’m usually pretty accurate at detecting if that person is male or female

How do you check if you are correct? How do you know that the woman you clocked as a woman is not a passing transwoman? You don't. You are just making an assumption you are correct.

I am actually fairly GC myself FWIW. But I like arguments to stand up to scrutiny. And I think someone who deliberately takes hormones and has facial surgery to blur the boundaries of gender perception has a chance of passing in ordinary conditions such as walking on the street.

Have you seen how 'trans women' walk? You can hear the footsteps and they follow a male pattern.

They think it’s sad, they’re as entitled to think that as you are to think it’s a good thing.
I don’t really understand this need from TERFs to not only ‘have your way’ but also then sulk when other people/female organisations are upset about it. girl guides and the wi have both made it clear they do f want to take this action, but have had their hand forced. I don’t really see how this benefits anyone.

A male pattern? What’s that then? Does their penis slap the floor audibly so you can hear a 3rd step? I’ve never read such utter bollocks in all my life. 😂😂

It benefits women who want single sex spaces.

If orgs want to change their status to unisex, they are free to do so

Males do walk differently to females. It's to do with differing Q angles (hip to thigh alignment) as a result of different pelvic structures.

But the people who want the single sex spaces still aren’t happy because the WI aren’t skipping about in joy about it.
I also don’t know how I’d feel being part of an organisation that really dislikes my politics/world view.

The WI aren't a monolith and many will be very happy that they've taken this step regardless of what some in management think.

I didn’t say they didn’t walk differently: the average person being able to pick out those differences from the sound of how a person walks is what I’m questioning.

Also, Like any and all other human characteristics, gait patterns exist on a spectrum, there may be people on the ends of the spectrum who are very distinctive in how they walk, but the rest, the differences by sound would be very subtle. And there will be a subset of people who walk much more like the opposite gender then the one they were assigned at birth.

I've never tested myself on male/female specifically, but I can identify all of my family members from the sound of their footsteps so it doesn't sound particularly far fetched to me.

"girl guides and the wi have both made it clear they do f want to take this action, but have had their hand forced. I don’t really see how this benefits anyone."

Nope you're wrong there! GG and WI could both have undertaken the process to change their charter from female single sex group, to mixed sex. They chose to stay single sex and with that comes lawful discrimination against all males.

As to who it benefits, well it benefits the women and children who need single sex groups obviously.

If you think there's a demand for it you are welcome to set up a trans identifying men inclusive hobby group. There are alternatively, plenty of other men's single sex groups or actually mixed sex groups they could join if they wanted to. There are no laws stopping them from that, and the women in those mixed sex groups at least know they are going to a mixed sex group from the start.

The boys who are gender confused can join Boys Brigade, Scouts or other male single sex or mixed sex groups.

TheKeatingFive · 09/12/2025 04:24

No gait differences are not 'on a spectrum'. The mechanics of how males walk is different to the mechanics of how females walk because of those angles being different.

Bollocks? Really? Is that your only comment?

We can perceive things that you wouldn't logically explain. Get someone to stand behind you with a jug of cold water and a jug of hot water.

Ask the person to pour one then the other, you will hear a difference.

People aren’t assigned sex at birth. The midwife doesn’t toss a coin. They look, they see, they write it down And you know what, it’s possible to IDENTIFY THE SEX OF THE FOETUS TWENTY WEEKS BEFORE BIRTH

No. That would be the pattern that comes from walking with the hip alignment that is male, leading to q angles that is a male body feature. This impacts balance and gait.

Don't assume that just because you cannot tell the difference in gait between male and female people that this inability is universal.

This paragraph is illogical.

Yes. There will be people who are outliers on a spectrum. However, it is two spectrums - male gait and female gait. And there will be people who may walk very similarly to the other sex pattern. They will have distinctive walk patterns compared to their sex class.

However the bulk of the patterns will match the typical pattern for their sex which is not ‘subtly different’ to the other sex. That would be the group of outliers where there may be closer similarities. These people are not likely to have any higher proportion of people who say they have a gender identity as the rest of the people in that sex category.

Oh look, another person who thinks women and girls who need single sex spaces don't count as "anyone".

And who also wants to end single sex spaces while accusing the terfs of being the ones who can't stand anyone else having a space that suits them.

Men also use their shoulders differently when walking, tend to have higher body mass and a longer stride, which all makes a difference.

Gendered footwear also has a big impact, I’m not sure that I’d be quite as confident identifying someone as male if they’re tottering along in high heels (unless they still walk like a brickie in work boots).

The scene in Some Like It Hot at the train station covers this quite well. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon struggling to walk in their woman disguise following Marilyn Monroe down the platform.

That’s for comedic effect, they weren’t even trying to be convincing.
