Misunderstood Xmas gift

Just for fun, what have you given as a Christmas present that totally fell flat and was misunderstood? My bad idea was a box of luxury crackers. It was some yrs ago, late 80s. Very cheap crackers were the norm and the luxury sort were more of a rarity. So I bought a box for my sister. She and her husband always had friends round on Boxing Day or NY Day, when she pulled out all the stops. The crackers would have graced any table. White with golden ribbons, they looked classy, and the items inside were so much nicer than the usual trinkets. Twice as expensive for half as many, it seemed the sort of thing many would like but would never justify buying. However, my sister decided that since nobody would give anyone crackers, they had to be intended just as packaging, so she proceeded to pull them all one after the other, and ended up with a pile of trinkets, albeit superior trinkets.

That's my best flop, but a close second is giving a friend a metal water bottle because she carried water in an old plastic lemonade bottle. So she now uses the bottle at home when the rest of us use glasses and carries on with her ancient plastic bottles outside.

I bought my grandma a pair of what I thought were lovely slippers one year when she was starting with dementia. She went absolutely mad about how awful they were! Obviously she wasn't aware of what she was doing.

Bought dd2 one of those ride on blow up bouncy hoppers for her 2nd Christmas, she liked the feel of the rubber and bit a hole in it about 10 minutes after we have it to her!

I'm laughing at the image of your sister pulling all the crackers though, sorry!

I'm sure the slippers were truly lovely. Before long I was laughing at the crackers, despite having been indignant at first 😃

My mother's mother-in-law bought her a very oversized china cup and saucer. My Mom thought the cup looked like a potty, was offended and hid it in the shed.

I cringe at this, but I tried to give my very elderly grandad copies of my wedding photos as a gift (of his side of the family), thinking he might like to show people in his care home. He clearly disagreed and forced me to take them back home with me 😂

My mum was in a care home with mid stage dementia. She asked about her dog every visit so my daughter arranged for a cushion shaped like him with his photo on. Lovely and soft to the touch and a perfect representation of her dog. She didn't want it because it made her sad to look at it so I had to take it home!

ContentedAlpaca · 03/12/2025 13:59

Another dementia one. I gave my grandmother a hand wash, which she then proceeded to taste!

A box of crackers is a rogue gift 😂

When I was about 9 (many moons ago) I went every week to a gift shop to pay off a Christmas present for my mum and dad, a little old man and lady in rocking chairs money boxes. Mum and Dad were only in their early 40's!!!, they had the good grace to not say anything bad

BernadetteJune · 03/12/2025 14:02

Bought an elderly relative a luxury damask tablecloth as they had been admiring ours which we got as a wedding present. They presumed we thought their table cloths were cheap and nasty. They stuck it in a draw and I don't think they have ever used it!

Giving my younger cousins slippers for Christmas when they were in their teens and I in my twenties (perfectly nice, tan sheepskin fluffy things). One said to the other, very loudly and with a tone of horror "does she really think we would wear these?!" Now they are the ones in their twenties they most certainly would!

Aww, this was such a lovely and thoughtful gift idea. Such a shame it didnt hit the mark but i can see why you tried

Giving someone crackers on Christmas Day is a candidate for the unhelpful helpful Christmas thread 😂

Curious how the best ideas sometimes go pear shaped. Seems like a nice gift.

Lol I bought a set of 6 gin crackers for my sister and she proceeded to drink all of them on the spot. I think that was the worst Christmas as she passed out and lost bowel control in the downstairs loo & I had to clean everything up.

My sister thought so too, and proceeded to tell everyone during a family dinner in January. She then proceeded to boast about how clever she'd been in realising she was supposed to pull them all at once. 😂

I bought my mum and dad a fire stick when they were quite a new thing. I thought it was a brilliant present as they only had normal TV. They didn't understand it at all, i tried to explain it in front of everyone but they couldn't have cared less, they looked really disappointed!!
Of course a couple of years down the line everyone had them and of course they used loads of the channels.

Grammarnut · 03/12/2025 14:25

Your sister is weird. Why would you pull all the crackers?
