I didn’t vote Labour, but was actually quite excited. We needed change, now I dint think that at all and although Tories weren’t great in many respects, this shit show feels worse! I’m so tired of our politicians just not doing what is best for the country and having to curtail to babk benchers/unions, lining their own pockets and wardrobes and generally just being untrustworthy.
i have no doubt Farage will get in next time, and it will be Keir’s fault.

Honestly, you think he’s doing ok? I’m honestly amazed that anyone thinks that.

So you posted the thread so that you could argue with anyone who thinks the current government are doing OK?

SwordToFlamethrower · 01/12/2025 09:05

Overall I am happy yeah. They aren't the Tories. They aren't perfect but they're taxing posh schools and taking land back from the Lords and Ladies who pretend to farm but don't. They are bringing back sure start, investing into parks, sorting out immigration. Stopped HS2. Now the 2 child cap is being lifted.

Migration fell overall (mainly due to restrictions on students being able to bring family over-which I believe was introduced by Tories). Asylum migration did not fall, it made up 11% of all migration and is double what it was in 2019.

the migration picture as a whole is not positive. There are less people getting skilled worker visas and a higher share of refugees.

the economic impact of migration isn’t how many of migrating, but who is migrating.

Of course asylum migration is double was was in 2019, the increase is massively influenced by Brexit. Britain is attractive because if asylum is denied here the asylum seeker can reapply in the EU, whereas if they are denied in the EU it is the end if the road.

This isn't going to resolve after a year, but they can't be accused of not attempting to grasp the nettle. This situation was induced by Nigel Farage snd the Conservatives, why anyone would trust them to resolve it is beyond me.

They have increased leave to remain waits for lower paid work. I was pleased they did this with care as companies use migration to pay care workers less than they deserve.

I am disillusioned with them all too, have always voted Labour but fed up with their incompetence and lies. Have no idea who to vote for any more, have no faith in any of the major parties.

I feel the same, I will look more into the Green Party I think.

I don’t think they’re doing a terrible job. It’ll take a while to correct the shit show of the last 15 years. What we need more than anything is stability. And for the press to back off and let the changes take effect and to stop stirring up discontent and division.

Pretty much this. I don't think they're amazing, I don't think they're terrible.

I didn't vote for Labour at the GE.

I do think the country is in a poor state and any govt in power at the moment would be having a hard time of it, but the knives seem out for Labour in a particularly aggressive way.

There is definitely an improvement in NHS wait times for me.

I don't think the budget was the worst in history and I think anyone who says that has very short memories or has blanked out Truss / Kwarteng due to trauma.

SwordToFlamethrower · 01/12/2025 09:08

Oh yes and I'm very happy with them sorting out the NHS, which is going to take time, but they acted straight off the bat when they got in. Also my MP is amazing, hardworking and genuinely caring. Our previous tory mp was a corrupt self serving arsehole.

I don't understand why people think Labour should be able to sort out 14 years of corruption and decline within 1 year. The press is obviously against them as all I ever see is a negative spin on all the good stuff they're doing.

Yes, thanks - and I'm paying more tax.

ilovesooty · 01/12/2025 09:09

The number of ex prisoners serving 12 + month sentences gaining employment on release has increased since the appointment of James Timpson. Some good work is being done there.

Are you though? Have you checked?

LizzieSiddal · 01/12/2025 09:10

I voted Labour. I’m not 100% happy but I’d vote for them again tomorrow rather than the Tory’s or Reform.

Anyone who thinks Reform would do a better job should look at all the councils they are running at the moment. A reform govt would make Liz Truss look competent.

I like what Labour have done with -

Workers rights
Renters reforms
Abolishing 2 child benefit cap
Trade deals to try to mitigate the disaster of Brexit.

AntiHop · 01/12/2025 09:11

I voted Labour and I would expect to again at the next election.

They inherited a huge mess. Change will take time.

Some positives so far:
Improving renters' rights
Improving workers' rights
Putting in place expectation of a high standard of English for immigration
Taxing extremely high value properties
Bringing many children out of poverty

What I would like to see next is finding a way to stop corporate tax avoidance, and finding a way to increase doctors' training posts to avoid the impending catastrophe of unemployed newly graduated doctors.

grannycake · 01/12/2025 09:12

Very happy thanks

Timeforabitofpeace · 01/12/2025 09:13

They might as well be Tories, in my opinion. I feel sad that they’ve been such a mess, and that Starmer is so wooden and charmless . I’d never, ever vote Reform, though.

LizzieSiddal · 01/12/2025 09:13

This times a million. The press is owned and run mainly by tax exiles who hate a Labour goverment. Day in day out they find and exaggerate negativity about this country. It’s depressing!

What did people expect, with the utter shitshow that was inherited by them?

Imagine the shitshow the next Government will inherit from this crowd!
I don’t usually take much notice of politics, there is enough misery in the world, but the 8am news this morning on the way to school was almost entirely lying Politicians, Reeves and her imaginary black hole, a woman MP who has got into trouble for corruption in Pakistan, and another one sacked for something else, can’t remember what. And this is the party that was going to bring standards back to Westminster…

Labour is also taking steps to protect women and children from abusers and rapists. That has been very much overlooked.

He should be knighted for his work with prisoners even before he was in government. Helping former prisoners is of huge value to the country

JamesClyman · 01/12/2025 09:17

The Tories were dumped. That's all that mattered.

What did people expect, with the utter shitshow that was inherited by them?

I for one expected better than the even bigger shitshow they’re churning out, considering all their bleating of “change”.

And the alleged “£22 billion black hole” they chirped about when they first got in, (if it even existed) would be an indication of their own lack of due diligence in identifying it. If you can miss a £22 BILLION shortfall then you aren’t fit to run a country — so that’s a reflection on them, not on the equally incompetent lot that got booted out.

KittyHigham · 01/12/2025 09:17

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 01/12/2025 08:35

Ive always been anti reform, but honestly starting my to think they deserve a chance. I’m actually so depressed by it all.

You think a bunch of racists with no political history and no proven political acumen, should be "given a chance" to run the country?!
They would decimate human rights and create divisions instead of unity. Why on earth would you think they have the skills to negotiate on a global platform or provide economic success? What plans do they have for the most vulnerable in our society.
They don't come with a positive manifesto, they come with emotive bigotry.
Every government inherits challenges from the previous regime as well as world political circumstances. There was a global pandemic just 5 years ago. There was a disastrous decision to leave the eu, set up by Cameron who called a referendum with a single in or out vote! No Brexit plan, no one taking political responsibility for planning ahead so voters had any sort of financial, economic, or social consequences to actually consider. Utter madness.
I have yet to be entirely happy with any govt, whether I voted for them or not. And I've been eligible to vote since 1979 so plenty have come and gone. But hell would reeze over before I voted for reform.

HopSpringsEternal · 01/12/2025 09:19

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 01/12/2025 08:43

Honestly, you think he’s doing ok? I’m honestly amazed that anyone thinks that.

I mean the fact that you would even consider Reform has turned me off having a serious debate with you.
Have you not seen what their mp's have been up to and what their councillors are doing. The Welsh Reform Leader has just got ten years prison for admiting to taking bribes from Russia. One of the five MPs was found to have been jailed for domestic violence. Farage has basically admitted that he was racist openly as a schoolboy.
They are absolute scum.
I am not loving the lack of direction but they have managed to do some things well. Given the terrible state of our reputation abroad following Johnson, Starmer has managed to pull this right back.

I am not keen on Polanski. I don't know why, because I agree with quite a lot of what he says.

I agree with @Timeforabitofpeace that in many ways Labour is Tory-lite which is a disappointment.

If there is a danger of Reform winning the next GE, I will vote tactically.

Their refusal to investigate the rape gangs leaves me wholly unconvinced they give a toss.
