To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

It’s just one of those things that are either common sense or not important enough to mention I guess.

It’s not either of those things! It’s not at all sensible and no one mentions it in the same way no one says “make sure you don’t bleach your toes today”.

ETA ah I see the OP is having a little jokey joke with us. Nice one.

Lastfroginthebox · 28/11/2025 22:06

How do you think animals manage? Eyes are obviously self-cleaning and I think it is probably not advisable to try to clean them.

Yeah, interesting only post by the OP on MN eh?

I've reported.

Reported for what?

Obviously we don’t see eye-to-eye

The most batshit post on MN ever (in a crowded field)?

Step away from the keyboard RFK Jr!

Wrenjay · 28/11/2025 22:08

You should only use sterile liquids in your eyes as a contact lens wearer. Tears wash your eyes unless you have an eye condition that stops you producing tears. Water from a shower/basin taps are not sterile and you could be putting yourself at risk of an eye infection.

deathbyprocrastination · 28/11/2025 22:08

This is the funniest thread I've read in ages

I’m actually often complimented on my eyes! I’ve had a few comments about how white the whites are.. maybe that why!

Oh give over 😂

StitchHappens · 28/11/2025 22:10

Omg. I am going to have nightmares tonight 🤣🫣

HonoraBridge · 28/11/2025 22:10

Do you stick a brush up there and scrub your cervix?

I had a smear test recently and winced just reading that

I have never knowingly washed my eyeballs.

I so wish there was a laugh response! I have been shaking with laughter! It is comments like this that make MN worthwhile.

singmoon · 28/11/2025 22:12

Is this a joke?

A top contender, anyway. 🥇🥈🥉

Just had the best laugh. No idea if this is serious or not but thanks.

CunningLinguist2 · 28/11/2025 22:14

Eyeballs & fanjos are self cleaning.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/11/2025 22:15

My mum used to put a little bit of bleach in our bath water when she cleaned us. I had to make her promise not to put bleach in my children’s baths! I think OP has gone to the same school of cleaning.

Reported for making a dangerous claim that could seriously damage someone's health, because you're bored and wanted a laugh.

I assume. I didn't report it, but again am repeating this is not a real thing, and nobody does this.

Or "Don't try this at home" as they used to warn us on TV shows, before doing something immensely stupid and dangerous.

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:16

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

This is rubbish, and actually you’re more likely to have eye infections from shower water or “washing your eyeballs” !

My optician is always emphasising the use of sterile saline or other sterile liquid for rinsing my hands and then inserting contact lenses. He tells me I should never use tap water. It’s not sterile.

YABU and whoever “taught” you this is bonkers.

In the history of humanity, nobody has ever complimented anyone on the whiteness of their eyeballs 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

osloslow · 28/11/2025 22:18

Hmmm my mum
just had her cataracts done as was told do NOT wash your eyes with water. By all means clean the gunk around them with sterile water but strictly use sterile eye drops to reduce the risk of infection.

I thought tears were the eye’s natural cleansers? Eyebrows, eyelashes and eyelids help to prevent anything getting in the eye
