To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

I have never knowingly washed my eyeballs.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/11/2025 21:11

I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned my eyes. They are quite obviously self cleaning!

Octavia64 · 28/11/2025 21:11

ew.

fuck no.

you do not need to wash eyeballs.

Coulddowithanap · 28/11/2025 21:12

Sorry but 😂😂😂

Chemenger · 28/11/2025 21:12

What do you think tears do?

LighthouseLED · 28/11/2025 21:12

Oh god, just the thought of spraying shower water in my eyes makes me wince.

Eyeballs are self-cleaning - that is what blinking does!

ForZanyAquaViewer · 28/11/2025 21:12

What the hell have I just read?

FatCatPyjamas · 28/11/2025 21:12

I lick mine like a gecko like all normal people.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/11/2025 21:13

WTF am I reading??

DisappointedD · 28/11/2025 21:13

They are definitely self cleaning! So much so that mine don’t stop and run constantly! Blocked oil duct apparently.

You can’t actually be being serious though surely?

Tiswa · 28/11/2025 21:13

But they are self cleaning tears and blinking and water isn’t good for them

usethedata · 28/11/2025 21:13

Is this a joke?

This is the strangest thing I've ever seen on mumsnet. Of course you don't need to wash your eyeballs! In fact, I'm pretty sure opticians would advise against it.

Coulddowithanap · 28/11/2025 21:14

Do you use shower gel too?

Twistedfirestarters · 28/11/2025 21:14

Why stop at your eyeballs? I inhale the shower water to give my lungs a good clean out.

Sneezo · 28/11/2025 21:14

I clean mine once a week properly with bleach, other than that it’s just a daily squirt of Cif.

JDM625 · 28/11/2025 21:15

I have a special, hard bristled brush to cleanse mine thoroughly. Doesn't everyone? 😆

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:16

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

RitaFires · 28/11/2025 21:16

I make a point to not interfere in that ecosystem. You must have really conquered your instinct to blink, you'd be a real challenge in a staring contest.

Pricelessadvice · 28/11/2025 21:16

You mean you don’t give them a daily scrub with swarfega??

murasaki · 28/11/2025 21:16

I bet you insert shower gel into your vagina too. Don't.

RuffledKestrel · 28/11/2025 21:17

And that's just to cope with reading topics like this 😂

Washing your eyeballs with tap/shower water is more than likely to give you eye infections. Especially if you wear contacts.

clary · 28/11/2025 21:17

I’m sorry what? nope. Of course no one washes their eyeballs. I mean ewwwww and also nooooo. It’s just you I think @HumourMeThis

OriginalUsername2 · 28/11/2025 21:17

I use an old toothbrush to really get the grime off
