To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

If your eyes are gunky, clean them with cooled boiled water.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2025 21:18

Of course you dont wash your eyeballs!
Who told you to do that?

No, absolutely not, that is not a thing

whoever taught you that is a lunatic

your vagina is also self cleaning and doesn’t need whatever chemical shit I’m sure you’re pumping up there

ImThePr0blem · 28/11/2025 21:19

Almost choked on my tea 😂

No normal person washes their eyeballs.

Blarn · 28/11/2025 21:19

What!?

There is a poor man somewhere in the UK wondering what kind of eyewashing lunatic he's married!

RacingAcrossTheSofa · 28/11/2025 21:19

I… no. I have never washed my eyeballs.

Sorry OP but this is possibly the battiest thing I’ve read on MN.

ReignOfError · 28/11/2025 21:19

I swear this place gets madder by the day.

LighthouseLED · 28/11/2025 21:19

Actually I’m sure last time I had an eye infection I was specifically told to wash the closed eyelids with warm water.

RetainersinSpainnotontheplane · 28/11/2025 21:19

If you don’t take them out once a week minimum and soak them in a bleach solution as I do you’re an utter slattern imo 👀

MidnightColours · 28/11/2025 21:20

Note that eye drops are sterile for a reason. Anything else can lead to infections.

BillieWiper · 28/11/2025 21:21

I guess you end up washing face wash or shampoo out of them but otherwise I wouldn't wash my eye balls, no!

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 28/11/2025 21:21

Sneezo · 28/11/2025 21:14

I clean mine once a week properly with bleach, other than that it’s just a daily squirt of Cif.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

ChaChaChaChanges · 28/11/2025 21:21

You have been given terrible advice. WTF???

notallwhowanderare · 28/11/2025 21:22

This is clearly bollocks, and a joke thread.

Dweetfidilove · 28/11/2025 21:22

I love MN 🤣🤣🤣

Perfidia · 28/11/2025 21:22

Sincerely hope no one is taking this OP seriously?

Octavia64 · 28/11/2025 21:22

I used to get conjunctivitis a lot as a kid.

the advice was to use cooled boiled water (so sterile water) and an eye bath to clean the eyes.

absolutely not the hot water that has been in the system. Genuinely can’t believe you do this.

andae · 28/11/2025 21:22

Nice try

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:22

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

There can be a bacteria present in our tap water that can cause a severe eye infection which can lead to permanent damage or blindness.

If you wear contact lenses, you're reminded at each check up not to swim or shower in the lenses in case this bacteria gets trapped under the lens. You're also told never to rinse them in tap water.

Hence I definitely would never wash my eyeballs with shower water.

If you call someone a liar do they delete your comment on here?

Itiswhysofew · 28/11/2025 21:24

If I washed my eyeballs, they would be very sore and my nose would run.

Who told you cleaning eyeballs is necessary, because it's not?😂

ImThePr0blem · 28/11/2025 21:24

@HumourMeThis you’ve never had something in your eye and it has become watery? That’s your eye essentially cleaning itself to remove irritants.

I’m curious how your general eye health is and if you wear glasses? I imagine washing your eyeballs your whole life would actually cause damage

I think you'd need a slightly bigger sample size than 2 to draw any conclusions
