To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Surely you're joking, OP? I'd imagine you're much more likely to get an infection from putting unsterilised water in your eye.

RedRiverShore5 · 29/11/2025 21:00

I had to wash my eye this morning, I somehow managed to flick a bit of toothpaste in it.

PickASize · 29/11/2025 21:22

You're not supposed to wash your eyeballs, just the outside skin around them and you can use a cotton pad with water to clean the gunk from your eyelids and corners.
Maybe the op is confused as eyes are self cleaning, tears literally produce a saline solution to wash gunk out.

Skybluepinky · 29/11/2025 21:42

Think someone was playing a joke on you and you fell for it.

UniversalCreditBitch · 29/11/2025 21:48

I cannot get over how you think this is normal. Standing under shower head washing your eyes out. Are you okay or on medication? You seem very gullible. Possibly vulnerable, i think.

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 29/11/2025 21:55

Are you taking the piss OP?!

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

Nope... That would encourage bacterial infections.

There’s bacteria in tap water. They tell you never to wash contact lenses with tap water for this reason. I imagine shower water is the same. Surprised you haven’t got an infection yet. You need to use something like optrex.

Puffin69 · 29/11/2025 23:12

What do you imagine tears are for? The area round the eye isn't but barring accident or illness the eye itself is.

Emma58hole · 29/11/2025 23:19

Are you suffering from a mental illness? If not, you are obviously very neurotic.

youegg · 29/11/2025 23:23

I’m a contact lens wearer and opticians absolutely drum into you that you must dry your hands before inserting lenses as tap water can carry a bacteria that basically eats your eyeballs off.
My friend had it a while ago and she’s partially blind in one eye now
Yeah you don’t need to wash your eyes FFS!

Well, crying?!

When I get something in my eye I use an eye bath- otherwise I never clean my eyeballs- they are self cleaning- clear the sleep from the corners of your eyes, because that's where any gunk goes.

Dillydollydingdong · 30/11/2025 05:21

Ridiculous! This is a joke, right?

😳😳 doing just this could get you an infection!!! Shower water isn’t sterile, there is risk of Acanthamoeba keratitis! It’s rare, but if you have an eye abrasion, it’s dangerous! Stop doing this, especially if you wear contact lenses.

EyeLevelStick · 30/11/2025 08:16

Why do people not read all the OPs posts before responding?

Yes, she was on a wind up. A very effective one, evidently.

catmum44 · 30/11/2025 08:22

Eyes are self cleaning with their own optical fluids. Foreign matter is purged with tears. Chlorinated tap water is not an alternative.

DearDenimEagle · 30/11/2025 12:42

Your eyes are self-washing, that is what your eyelids are for…it’s like wiper blades on a windscreen 😁My optician recommended washing eyelashes with baby shampoo…it’s not for the eyelashes, but for the gunk and tiny mites that live at the base of the lashes. So don’t forget to wash your lashes

Lovingmynewlifestyle · 30/11/2025 18:52

Read this post in horror. A friend who is going through cancer treatment, so her immune system is low, ended up having an eye infection. Despite many trips to eye specialist the bug could not be destroyed. Eventually she lost her eye. It is a rare condition but it happens.
Look up Acanthamoeba keratitis for details.

JoeyJava · 30/11/2025 21:07

I'd love to know if someone mis-clicked "YANBU" or if it's just the OP answering their own question.

Doing it for a joke wouldn't quite cut it.

This thread is actually golden 🤣

@MNHQ petition to get this to classics 🤣🤣

It shouldn’t be it is a dangerous thread even as a joke. I too have a friend like @Lovingmynewlifestyle who lost an eye to the same thing and seeing her go through it was awful.

I find it distasteful actually the whole idea it could be classics

Annoying waste of time
