To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Is anybody else suddenly conscious of their eyeballs and how they feel right now? Mine feel quite dry. Maybe they need a wash.

catontheironingboard · 28/11/2025 21:45

This must be a joke, right?

Generally, you don’t need to intentionally clean your eyes in the shower, because eyes are already self-cleaning. But whether it’s okay depends on how you’re doing it.

✅ Safe:

  • Letting clean shower water run over your closed eyelids This can help loosen crusts or wash away irritants around the lashes.

⚠️ Use caution:

  • Letting shower water hit your eyes directly while open Tap water isn’t sterile and can irritate your eyes, especially if you wear contacts. It also may carry tiny organisms (like Acanthamoeba) that are harmless to ingest but can cause serious eye infections if they get trapped under contact lenses.

🚫 Not recommended:

Intentionally flushing your open* eyes with high-pressure shower spray
Cleaning eyes in the shower while wearing contact lenses*

So what should you do?

It’s fine to wash your eyelids and lashes* gently with closed eyes.
If you need to rinse the inside of the eye (because of irritation, debris, or dryness), sterile saline or proper eyewash* is safer than shower water.

If you want, tell me your situation (contacts? dry eyes? irritation?) and I can give m
ore specific guidance.

I’m actually often complimented on my eyes! I’ve had a few comments about how white the whites are.. maybe that why!

Do you indeed 😂

That's even weirder than the eyeball washing. People come up to you and comment on how white the whites of your eyes are?!

lazyarse123 · 28/11/2025 21:47

Omg after the miserable budget threads of the last few days this has really cheered me up 😂😂😂😂

Francestein · 28/11/2025 21:47

Sounds like an invitation to irritated sclera to me

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:47

I’ve never felt my body vibrate by chuckling quite like it has in the last 40 minutes.

well no because the GP doesn’t routinely tell you not to use soap in your minge either, or to wash between your toes. It’s just one of those things that are either common sense or not important enough to mention I guess.

But a dentist talks about cleaning every time 😆 its a specific part of your body, so they would talk about cleaning it!
And if you have thrush your GP would (or should) definitely ask about cleaning!

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

Well, everyone else doesn’t wash their eyeballs and doesn’t have frequent eye infections so obviously not washing your eyeballs works.

Have you ever seen eye shampoo, or eye soap, or eye cleaner advertised? If it was an area of the body you were supposed to wash then there would be. You can buy specialist products to clean your eyelids if you have blepharitis or a medicated eye wash if you have had some kind of foreign body in your eye but that’s it.

Redpeach · 28/11/2025 21:50

Does swimming with your eyes open under water count?

there are eye washes, but generally you don’t need anything but clean water. Just like vagina health, a rinse is plenty.

It’s obviously not a joke.

OP is going to tell us the secret to white eye balls. You just need to wait until page 38 for the ingredients reveal.

I’m calling it now it’s got bicarbonate it in. It’s always bicarb.

Smartiepants79 · 28/11/2025 21:51

This has got to be a joke. No one deliberately puts anything in their eyes unless it’s medications or contacts!
So weird.

RedHotMess · 28/11/2025 21:51

Can anyone recommend how I can get my eyeballs rolled back to the front of my face after reading this?

Take them out and wash them.

Bicarbonate soda and rice wine vinegar. Apply, let sit for 3 minutes then rinse thoroughly!

You’re welcome 🫶

Bicarb and vinegar. Just pat it in to your eyes and leave it for 5-10 minutes. If there are any bits that don't look white enough get one of those scouring pads and give it a rub

With added fluoride, I hope.
