To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Coming from a family of eyeball washers - these replies have baffled me! Bet none of you lot wash in your belly button or ears either 🤢🤢

OP, your sister’s here!

Christ, there's more than one of you?

Let’s hope they’re both from the same family

Eating apple pips will not cause a tree to grow in your stomach

Staring at a TV screen will not give you square eyes

Sitting on a cold wall will not give you a kidney infection

Not washing your eyeballs does not cause eye infections

HTH

Musicmummy63 · 28/11/2025 21:39

How can this possibly work? To really get them clean you need to pop them right out , only then can you get the backs clean.

TheMorgenmuffel · 28/11/2025 21:39

Ask your optician next time you have an appointment

I just googled and the advice is to not wash them routinely and that they should only be 'washed' if medically necessary. Eg something in your eye and it should be a sterile eye bath, never tap water.

FrankLeeInsane · 28/11/2025 21:39

Oh, this is a wonderful thread. I needed a laugh. Well done OP, you cheered me right up with visions of eye socket swilling.

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 28/11/2025 21:39

Sorry OP but this is incredibly odd.

She could use a teaspoon, like getting the stone out of an avocado

Thundertoast · 28/11/2025 21:40

Okay OP, il bite, even though this is clearly a windup 😆 so when you go to the opticians, surely if you were meant to wash your eyeballs, they would talk about it during your appointment, like a dentist talks about best practice for your teeth - has that ever happened in an opticians appointment for you?

INeedABrewPlease · 28/11/2025 21:40

At the dentist, they ask without fail how often I clean my teeth. At the optician’s, I have NEVER been asked how often I wash my eyeballs.

This thread is hilarious 🤣

Interesting. My granny's version of the cold wall one said piles. It didn't do that either.

This is one of the most batshit posts I’ve ever seen on here.
Op has to be on a wind up! Surely nobody is that stupid…

I use an old toothbrush to really get the grime off

Weak. I use a wire brush - anything less is just for wimps and losers.

FailMeOnce · 28/11/2025 21:41

This is a spectacularly poor idea. I know someone who contracted the condition below from normal showering (not a contact lense wearer etc.) https://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/eye-conditions/acanthamoeba-keratitis

It is extremely painful and debilitating.

In a hard water area surely getting shower water properly in your eye is a huge irritant of itself?

If you feel you must 'wash your eyeballs' like a lunatic, at least use a properly formulated eyebath solution.

well no because the GP doesn’t routinely tell you not to use soap in your minge either, or to wash between your toes. It’s just one of those things that are either common sense or not important enough to mention I guess.

You’ve made me laugh so much OP that tears have come out of my eyes effectively giving them a wash - thank you

Same here!!

Duckishness · 28/11/2025 21:42

I want to know how bloodshot OPs eyes are when she gets out of the shower.

My boss would think I’d been on a massive bender if I rocked up to work like that.

ImThePr0blem · 28/11/2025 21:43

You must have crappy water pressure, if I tried doing that in the shower I’d blind myself

I’m actually often complimented on my eyes! I’ve had a few comments about how white the whites are.. maybe that why!

I have voted YANBU ... because somebody had to! But also, "unreasonable" doesn't even begin to cover it. 😂 Nice try, though.

Interesting, though, about the sparkling whiteness ... do you also use bleach?

You are not supposed to use soap IN your minge. On the outside yes, but not IN. It, like eyeballs, is self cleaning.

cardibach · 28/11/2025 21:44

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:35

In a glasses (and occasion contact lense) wearer and obviously I know not to wear my contacts while swimming or showering, but that’s because the contact lenses can get water trapped behind them and some rare bugs in the water can eat away at your eyes. Rinsing your eyes in the shower isn’t the same as bathing them for longer periods in a contact lense.

So how do you think the water you let into them during your shower gets back out and not trapped? Come on, you can work it out…

Fleur405 · 28/11/2025 21:44

I steam clean my eyeballs when I’m doing my vagina.

Do you stick a brush up there and scrub your cervix?
