To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

I think what you are doing is quite dangerous. Eyes are supersensitive. I am amazed that you haven't caught some kind of infection yet.

What do you mean whether you wash your legs or not?!

You’re telling me you wash your eyeballs but not your legs?

I do wash my legs! But I know people that don’t 😅

Meanwhile, those of us who wear contact lenses know you never ever ever use tap water on your lenses because of the risk of infection.

JDM625 · 28/11/2025 21:34

Where are your parents from OP that they thought this was normal?

GumFossil · 28/11/2025 21:34

No one washes their eyeballs, you weirdo 😂

FatCatPyjamas · 28/11/2025 21:34

But WHO taught you to do this, OP?

pinksheetss · 28/11/2025 21:34

Gotta be a troll

SecretSquirrelLoo · 28/11/2025 21:34

This is a really bad idea. If you have to wash close to the eye, you should use cooled boiled water.

Offloadontome · 28/11/2025 21:34

What the actual fuck 😂 nobody cleans their eyeballs! Why on earth would you need to do that??

Elsvieta · 28/11/2025 21:35

Gawd, after reading that I'm wishing I had something to wash my brain. Is it even possible to keep your eyes open when something's spraying into them?

Nobody else does this, OP, and we don't all have eye infections. Perhaps you should conclude, therefore, that what you were told is not correct?

You just rinse them, open eyes while looking up a bit into the shower and kinda look around a bit to give them a good rinse. I’m not like holding the shower head into my eyeballs like a lunatic. You just rinse them gentle by looking up.

No.

Got to be. For a minute I thought I'd been hacked and that someone was messing with the Mumsnet website.

murasaki · 28/11/2025 21:35

Have you tried feeding a really thin tube with holes in it through one ear and out of the other, then pouring water one end so it came out of the holes? That'd rinse the inside of your head out well. You could add some bleach, just to be sure.

In a glasses (and occasion contact lense) wearer and obviously I know not to wear my contacts while swimming or showering, but that’s because the contact lenses can get water trapped behind them and some rare bugs in the water can eat away at your eyes. Rinsing your eyes in the shower isn’t the same as bathing them for longer periods in a contact lense.

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

I’ve never had those things either and I don’t wash my eyes because I’m not a lunatic. But I think you’re on the wind-up anyway.

NannyOggsScones · 28/11/2025 21:36

You’ve made me laugh so much OP that tears have come out of my eyes effectively giving them a wash - thank you

PenCreed · 28/11/2025 21:36

I had to have a foreign body removed from my eye this year. At no point did the ophthalmologist tell me I should wash my eyeballs or ask why I wasn’t doing so! I was told not to wear contacts and to put an antibiotic gel in my eye for a week. Putting non-sterile water in my eyes would just be stupid.

notallwhowanderare · 28/11/2025 21:36

It is obviously a troll joke post, but I am worried someone might read this lunacy and try it.

I dont generally report posts, so instead just wanted to make it really really clear that this is not safe, and nobody does this.

Perhaps this is the OP’s mission.

Coming from a family of eyeball washers - these replies have baffled me! Bet none of you lot wash in your belly button or ears either 🤢🤢

I lick mine like a gecko like all normal people.

I never thought of this.

I give mine a quick once over with my toothbrush. Fresh.

Duckishness · 28/11/2025 21:38

I need to go wash my eyes as not sure I read this correctly.
