To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Resist it. It's quite funny once, do it again and it will just get tedious

eye don’t know what you mean.

Of course they are self-cleaning and no, you don't wash them in the shower.

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/11/2025 22:49

Don't balls it up, OP. Best to keep a lid on it.

Pusstachio · 28/11/2025 22:49

Obvs I wash them daily, with the song. I do my head, shoulders, knees and toes and then finish up with eyes and ears and mouth and nose then rinse off my head, shoulders knees and toes, knees and toes

murasaki · 28/11/2025 22:49

Eye think it's a shameless attempt to get into classic threads.

BauhausOfEliott · 28/11/2025 22:53

WHAT have I just read?

FarmGirl78 · 28/11/2025 22:54

When you were told to wash your eyes in the shower so you don't get conjunctivitis I guarantee you that the person meant wash the skin around your eyes and into the corners of your closed eyes, not actually open your eyes and wash your eyeballs with water. My optician would be horrified at this.

However your post has done a massive amount of good for the eye health of the nation, by the sheer amount of tears that people have shed whilst crying laughing at it.

alwaysrootingfortheantihero · 28/11/2025 22:55

I can only hope you’re using No More Tears, OP.

Hallywally · 28/11/2025 22:57

You’re a lunatic 🤣

😂
Pretty sure this is a wind-up thread!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! 😳

Statesider · 28/11/2025 22:59

This is the funniest thread. It reminds me of how much I love the British sense of humour!

Fiftyandme · 28/11/2025 23:01

Erm, your eyes are self cleaning. WTAF have you been doing to your eyes??

TerrysNeapolitan · 28/11/2025 23:02

I use Bleach

Fiftyandme · 28/11/2025 23:02

This needs to go in classics

Fiftyandme · 28/11/2025 23:03

TerrysNeapolitan · 28/11/2025 23:02

I use Bleach

Noooooo, that’s not strong enough. You need Lye, or undiluted sulphuric acid

Pusstachio · 28/11/2025 23:03

TerrysNeapolitan · 28/11/2025 23:02

I use Bleach

Have you tried Purdue and Fig? It does the same job but it’s all natural and the bottles are super middle class

Sahara123 · 28/11/2025 23:03

I keep thinking I’m in some kind of weird dream each time I read a response from OP…

No. Just NO

Fruitsherbert · 28/11/2025 23:04

My cat likes to lick mine. I thought that was enough.

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:22

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

All I can say is thank fuck you don’t work in medical research - because this is NOT how you test whether your hypothesis is correct or not.

SeaUrchinHat · 28/11/2025 23:05

This is hilarious. If this is real it hasn’t helped my feelings of despair at the state of human intelligence. Sorry OP but really.

This is one of the most weird posts I’ve ever seen on MN. And I’ve been around these parts for a very long time.🫣

Legobricksinatub · 28/11/2025 23:09

You really don’t want to be getting tap water in your eyes constantly. Ameoba infections in eyes are nasty and can destroy your eye - which is why you must never wash contact lenses in tap water.

Zippymonkey · 28/11/2025 23:09

I love this thread. It has really made me laugh @HumourMeThis

WearyAuldWumman · 28/11/2025 23:10

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:28

Well yes obviously but you don’t get foreign objects in your eyes everyday to make them water, so surely they need washing daily too?

I grew up with this information. My parents told me how to wash my eyes and I remember being quite young when I still used to shower with my mum and she would wash her eyeballs this way too. I don’t think it’s as unusual as people make out.. similar to whether people wash their legs or not.

I agree. A relative through marriage washed one of his eyes every day.

Mind you, it was glass.

BankfieldForever · 28/11/2025 23:11

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:16

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

No. This is mad, you’re lucky not to have had a bad infection. If your eyes are gunky its because of this!

Wipe them gently with cooled boiled water if you must and use sterile drops if they feel dry and uncomfortable. Or just do as your DH does and leave your eyes alone!
