To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

It’s actually illegal to wash your eyes unless you can take them out of their sockets, just saying.

Beg pardon?

or the penis beaker one.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 28/11/2025 22:34

Ok, joke it was.

Let's hope nobody really thinks you should wash eyeballs!

ElReverendoGreen · 28/11/2025 22:34

Jesus Christ. Of course your eyeballs are self cleaning 😨😣

what happens when you get an irritant in your eye? Your eye waters….to get the irritant out and to….clean it.

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:28

Well yes obviously but you don’t get foreign objects in your eyes everyday to make them water, so surely they need washing daily too?

I grew up with this information. My parents told me how to wash my eyes and I remember being quite young when I still used to shower with my mum and she would wash her eyeballs this way too. I don’t think it’s as unusual as people make out.. similar to whether people wash their legs or not.

You’ve got to be taking the piss? Please tell me you’re trolling 😂

ETA - I see OP confirmed being a troll as suspected, but the sad thing is there are people this stupid out there 😫😂🙈

In a glasses (and occasion contact lense) wearer and obviously I know not to wear my contacts while swimming or showering, but that’s because the contact lenses can get water trapped behind them and some rare bugs in the water can eat away at your eyes. Rinsing your eyes in the shower isn’t the same as bathing them for longer periods in a contact lense.

Ah, that well-known malady, eyes eaten away by rare water-borne bugs. We all know so many people that's happened to, it's a real bummer.

SpringIsSprung1 · 28/11/2025 22:36

Very well done op and 'looks' like it ain't done yet😎

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

Try putting tea-tree oil shower gel in them, and really rub it in - that'll surely help 🚿🫧🧼

Omg no don't wash your eyeballs

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 28/11/2025 22:39

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:42

well no because the GP doesn’t routinely tell you not to use soap in your minge either, or to wash between your toes. It’s just one of those things that are either common sense or not important enough to mention I guess.

But you're suggesting it's essential in order to stop conjunctivitis. You can't have it both ways.

AwfullyGood · 28/11/2025 22:40

I think you are winding us up!

Why do you think we blink? It's a self cleaning mechanism.

Why you you think that occassionally people wake up with crushy eyes? It's the build up causes by not blinking while sleeping.

Why do you think your eyes water if you get a stray eyelash etc? To get it out.

These are all self cleaning fuction of the eye!

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/11/2025 22:41

I take mine out and leave them in hypochloric acid overnight. 👀

Seriously, the OP is either a troll or a fucking loon. My eyes are watering just thinking about it. 😭

Of course I’m not. You shower daily, wash everywhere but yours eyes? At least tell me you use 6-8 drops of saline morning and night to keep the yuckies away?

Nannyfannybanny · 28/11/2025 22:43

They are definitely self cleaning! So much so that mine don’t stop and run constantly! Blocked oil duct apparently.

You can’t actually be being serious though surely?

Johnson's baby shampoo. A little bit on a cotton bud, run it over the lower lid and it'll clear the tear ducts.

I get it as well.
