To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Don't know why you're all giving the OP such a hard time. Mine go in the top tray of the dishwasher (on eco) when I go to bed. It's not like I need them overnight. Top tip: make sure the rinse aid is topped up for perfect 20-20 vision.

Butchyrestingface · 28/11/2025 23:14

I'm with you, @HumourMeThis

In fact, I'd even go so far as to question the moral rectitude of anyone who doesn't take their eyeballs out daily and give them a good polish with Mr Sheen.

Mumsnet is pure hoaching with filthy hallions.

Weak. I use a wire brush - anything less is just for wimps and losers.

Nah, you need to up your game. Pressure washer for the win

Do they not come out with that awful sandy-grit steam-stuck to them?!

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

I've also never had conjunctivitis, and I've never washed my eyeballs. So, how does that stack up now?

And no, getting normal tap water in your eyes is not good for them. Check with your optician if you must.

Separatedbutlivingtogether · 28/11/2025 23:26

😄 🤣 wow.

titchy · 28/11/2025 23:26

Mine go in the dishwasher once a week.

Blowing · 28/11/2025 23:27

Eyes are now sparkly clean, thanks OP. Any tips on how to give my pancreas a good scrub?

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 28/11/2025 23:27

You were taught wrong, in fact rising your eyes in tap water is how you can get the brain eating amoeba infection that has a 97% death rate.

Limered · 28/11/2025 23:28

How dull. Someone thinking they’re oh so original and funny starting a fake post. Stop wasting people time. Waste your own

Are you quite alright? I’m genuinely concerned for you!

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:16

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

Pure water is irritating for eyes, and exposing your eyes to pure water would probably be more likely to cause an infection than just leaving them be. The only time you should irrigate your eyes if you actually have something in them.

I’m actually often complimented on my eyes! I’ve had a few comments about how white the whites are.. maybe that why!

I think people are having you on.

There is no way your eyes are “clean”

Chickensky · 28/11/2025 23:39

AI will have a field day with this...but Eye digress.

MrsOverthinker25 · 28/11/2025 23:41

Shit, you’ve just reminded me that I’ve left my eyeballs soaking in a bowl of bleach in the bathroom!

Do ye, eye? 🤔

I lick mine like a gecko like all normal people.

😂😂😂

OriginalUsername2 · 28/11/2025 21:17

I use an old toothbrush to really get the grime off

Ah, no, what you want is an electric toothbrush or even better a wire brush for REALLY getting the dirt off your eyeballs!

OP- obviously this is a joke, do NOT follow my advice!

MyCatLovesCardboard · 29/11/2025 00:07

If it’s raining, do you look up at the sky while walking to give your eyes a quick refresh?

JFDIYOLO · 29/11/2025 00:08

I just pop them out after I've cleaned my teeth, let them bob around in the sink for for a few minutes then give them a good old whizz over with the nail brush, then in they go again, sparkling fresh.

pinkpony88 · 29/11/2025 00:08

😳

How do you dry them?

On the radiator

Aye aye!! Missed that one myself 🤣

Onautopilot · 29/11/2025 00:29

Google Acanthamoeba keratitis for one very good reason not to "wash your eyeballs";it's pretty ghastly so be warned!!! In 2018 my husband contracted it from showering with his contact lenses in. You don't have to be a lens wearer to get it though. Six weeks of agony, then some very knarly 'pesticide' to kill it (a big clue is the 'aomoeba' in the name)
